Visiting Authors Over Book week, we’ve had some well-known authors visiting our school to speak to our students about their writing craft, their illustrations and their inspirations for their writing. The visiting author for Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students was Anna Walker. The visiting author for Year 3/4 students was Felice Arena. The visiting author for Year 5 students was Shamini Flint. The visiting author for Year 6 students was James Phelan. Decorate A Doorway All classes have decorated a doorway in the theme of their chosen story. The displays have involved art and craft, as well as literacy, reading and writing. The effort of our students and teachers is outstanding. We invite you to come in and have a look if you have the opportunity. Wembley Primary School's Great Book Swap Reading Opens Doors! This year, as part of our Book Week celebrations, our school is supporting the work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation by holding a Great Book Swap during Book week on Friday the 26th August. BOOK SWAP: To take part in the fun, students need to bring along a book that they are happy to swap with another student and a gold coin donation to choose a “new” book. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) works to put books into the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. In the lifetime of the project, with the support of many people and organisations including schools, they have sent more than 120,000 new, high quality books to over 230 remote communities. The ILF also runs an early literacy project called Book Buzz, which puts board books into the hands of babies, toddlers and their families. The Foundation has published and funded more than 40 community books, some of which are translated into first language. Please help us support their great work! Please bring any books that you would like to donate to school any time from next Monday 15th August. There will be a box set up outside the office labeled for this purpose. Then don't forget to bring your gold coin donations on the day! Thank you. Literacy and Numeracy Week 29 Aug - 4 September Next week is Literacy and Numeracy Week. During that week, the following Numeracy activities have been planned as extras to our teaching p: Monday the 29th – Junior Maths Trail. Tuesday the 30th – Senior Paper Plane - estimate and measure. Wednesday the 31st – Junior Paper Plane - estimate and measure Thursday the 1st – Seniors Maths Trail Friday the 2nd – Length/Weight activity Monday to Friday – Estimate the lolly jar competition. IMPORTANT WBJC UPDATES: Hi everyone, Following our last Committee meeting, please note the following: 1) AGM & New Committee Members required Our Annual General Meeting will be held in October this year. Whilst a date is to be confirmed, we have a number of positions becoming vacant that require volunteers to fill in order for our club to continue to operate. Project Rockit, Goes Sky High by 5C

Project Rockit was awesome. They shared the coolest stories with us and it was epic. Their names were Archie, the boy, and Cassie, the girl. Project Rockit told us about all the bad possibilities that could happen if you are on a device and boy, they were bad. They also taught us a game a bit like Chinese Whispers except it was much more fun. It was more fun because you needed to communicate using body movements and you can’t talk, use sign language or a secret language. Overall I rate them 10/10 and everyone had a blast including me. By Samir 5C Project Rockit is a great chance to learn about cyber bullying. There were super fun activities such as the human chain. The human chain was where you had to act a mini story out and pass it along. We had Cassy and Archie come in to talk about cyber bullying. They gave us a heap of tips to avoid cyber bullying. Project Rockit made learning about cyber bullying fun. I would currently want them to come back. By Tess 5C When Cassie and Archie came in from Project Rockit, they introduced themselves with a ‘show and tell’. Their introductions were funny, but the main reason they came was to inform us about cyber bullying. Archie read a story about someone who was affected by cyber bullying. It was very emotional to me and maybe some other people. Soon after that Cassie read a story that Project Rockit wrote themselves. It was about how all the technology and internet got erased. At the end it said we had 5 minutes to make a list about what we wanted the internet and technology to be like. We wrote many things. I had a very fun time and I’m sure everyone else did as well. All the Year five students learnt a lot. By Aidan 5C Project Rockit is a company who visits schools around Victoria to teach about cyber bullying. They were really nice and helpful towards me and the other year fives. They taught me a lot about how bad cyber bullying is these days, like how it is a bad thing affecting a lot of people. They talked about how the topic can be fixed. They think, that if you break the “human chain” cyber bullying will stop. That’s pretty smart if you ask me. For more information on Project Rockit you can visit their website, http://projectrockit.com.au/ By Nick 5C Project Rockit is a great experience for the world. Today Project Rockit visited our school. Cassie and Archie were our teachers for 3rd and 4th session. Project Rockit is about the cyber bullying on the Internet. Cassie and Archie told us some Hot Tips for keeping safe in our accounts like Facebook or Instagram. Also they told us to put a code on our phones. They also told us if someone commented a really bad thing to your photo you could report them on Project Rockit. By James 5C Today these awesome people came to school. They named themselves Project Rockit! The people who came today were Cassie and Archie. It was amazing. They did funny things and at the start they did lots of entertaining activities such as asking people if they wanted to do some dance moves, like Nathan and his made up dance move ‘THE ROCK!’ We had fun and then they told us what we should do, like reporting bad things when we see it and not post things that are embarrassing for others. All that made me feel is what happens if that was me? Would I like it? Yeah I wouldn’t like it. Thanks Project Rockit for coming here. You taught me lots of things about what I should do and what I shouldn’t do and thankyou: By Lynton 5C This Thursday an anti-bullying group, Project Rockit came to Wembley to inform grades 5 through to 6 about cyber safety. They walked us through activities all to do with safety online. Project Rockit is a highly trained group that travels to different schools to teach them about the environment online. As you know, cyber bullying is a big problem and Project Rockit wants to help stop it. All of us had a great time and we learnt a lot. This friendly and supportive group is helpful and happy to help. Be sure to take a look at their website. http://projectrockit.com.au By Ebony

Term 3 Focus on the Visual Arts 2016 During Term 3 at Wembley, we have been focusing on the Visual Arts. The Art Show committee has organized one fantastic Junior Art show already (Week 3) and Senior Art Show will be upon us in one week’s time. As part of this focus on the Visual Arts I have created a piece of Installation Art in the corridor outside the Year One rooms. So what is Installation Art? ‘Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that often are site-specific and designedto transform the perception of a space’ The installation is called How Does Your Garden Grow? Its purpose is two-fold. Firstly, to create a sense of calm and quiet contemplation as you stand underneath and gaze up through the gently moving folded ornaments, and secondly, to create an awareness of recycling.

The Preps and Year One students were very excited when they first saw the installation and it piqued their curiosity and interest in their Art Show that would take place in the BER. Putting the installation together was a big job and I could not have done it without the help of my dear friend and fantastic ES staff member, Mary Hegarty. Mary worked tirelessly, folding and pleating the newspaper for the ‘floating flowers’. I would also like to thanks Mr Symmons for his help in hanging the installation and Grant Hobson for attaching the support beams.

Keep you eyes open for a display of wire sculptures and paintings created by our artistic Wembley teachers. Ruth Branthwaite Visual Arts Teacher

Art Shows – Term 3 2016 Dear Parents, The Senior Show (Yr3-6) opening night is Wednesday 31st August 5:30-7pm. Entrance is a gold coin per person or $5 for a family of five or more. Your admission will put you in the running for some fantastic door prizes, which will be drawn on the night at 6.30pm. As with the Junior Show, all of the senior students’ work will be ‘for sale’ (gold coin) and our budding artists are excited by the prospect of friendly competition within their family to buy their art work. All sold works will display a gold, sold sticker and we hope to see many gold dots on the night. If you can’t be there for opening night, you can still purchase your child’s artwork through the office. The senior students have put a lot of effort into their artworks and the Grade Six students will have three pieces of their work on display during this show. The photo booth was very popular at the last show, so we hope you will take the time to snap some funny ‘selfies’ like our teachers and post them on Social Media. There are three prizes in our Major Art Raffle. An amazing Gyotaku print created by Naoki Hayashi, which came all the way from Hawaii, a beautiful water colour painting by Rodney Symmons and a lovely patchwork quilt created by Dianne Symmons. Tickets have been sent home with students are will be available for purchase throughout the Senior Art Show. Tickets for our Major Art Raffle can also still be purchased from the office and will be drawn at the conclusion of both Art Shows. To view other artworks by Naoki Hayashi visit http://www.gyotaku.com and to view other artworks by Rodney Symmons visit http://www.peninsulagalleries.com.au/SymmonsR.htm
