To enter into this programme you will need a minimum of
12 credits from NCEA Level 1 standards for literacy skills
and a minimum of 8 credits for numeracy or an equivalent
qualification. If you are 20 years of age or older at the time
you start your studies, you are able to apply to WelTec under
special admission criteria. If English is your second language a
minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required.
FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS
Upon completing the Certificate in Hotel Reception (Level 3)
you can enter into the second year of the Diploma in Hospitality
Operations Supervision (Level 5).

If you like the idea of working with people in a fast paced,
dynamic industry, where no day is the same, then the Certificate
in Hotel Reception (Level 3) is the place to start your career.
Covering everything from hotel reception, reservations,
cashiering, food and beverage operations, porter service and
housekeeping, you will build up a comprehensive knowledge of
the hotel sector. In our simulated hotel front office facility you will
learn how to provide the best possible customer care, develop
your communication, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
and master computer reservation systems such as Fidelio.
With industry field trips, a three-day educational trip and three
weeks work experience, you will gain the skills you need to get
going. This is a multi-skilled qualification that offers excellent
skills across the board, from hospitality to general business
administration roles.

Learn to become a professional waiter, barista and bartender with
WelTec’s Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 3).
Designed to provide you with a broad knowledge of front of
house services within restaurant, hotel and café environments,
you will learn how to make coffee, mocktails and cocktails, gain
core table service skills, understand food and wine pairings and
learn about menu development. Along with all the technical
skills, you will also develop customer service, communication
and problem solving skills with hands-on experience working

with the Diploma in Hospitality Operations Supervision. The
hospitality industry is growing at a rapid pace. New business

prepares those wanting to enter into supervisory roles in the

management practice to understand how organisations
work. Expand your insight into, and understanding
of, human behaviour in organisations and the strategies
that can assist in managing resources to achieve

four writing) and a minimum of 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in
mathematics, or an equivalent qualification or experience.
You may apply for direct entry to the second year of the diploma
if you have completed the Certificate in Hotel Reception (Level
3), Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4) or
Certificate in Food Preparation and Culinary Arts (Level 4) or an
equivalent qualification.

You may exit with a Diploma in Hospitality Management (Level
6) if you successfully complete Stages One and Two of the
Bachelor of Hospitality Management and show evidence of 800
hours work in the industry.
FacilitiesAs a hospitality student, you will learn in purpose built facilities,
which include four training kitchens, a production kitchen, a latte
lab, bar training room, training restaurant and a model hotel room.
Bistro 107Our training restaurant, Bistro 107, is open throughout the
academic year to the public for lunches and dinners. Our food and
beverage and cookery students run the restaurant as part of their
study. This ensures that they receive real experience working in an
industry environment. The restaurant is fully licenced and offers
competitive prices.
> Develop strategic management skills to improve your
understanding of the industry, organisational management,
global concerns, competitors, supplier analysis and
leadership.
> Understand how to develop a marketing management plan
taking into consideration financial and organisational
objectives. You will learn about marketing strategies, market
segmentation, creating key points of difference and
the development of marketing tactics specific to hospitality.
> With a significant practical component, you will take part
in ‘live sessions’ at WelTec’s Bistro 107 learning the
fundamentals of food and beverage and cookery.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To enter into this programme you will need to have a minimum
of 42 NCEA Level 3 credits in relevant domains or approved
subjects from the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), plus
a minimum of eight literacy credits at Level 2 (four in reading
and four in writing) and a minimum of 14 credits at level 1 or
higher in mathematics.

PROGRAMME CONTENT
> Understand the tourism industry and how hospitality fits
into the mix. You will work on case studies looking at where
our tourists come from, sustainability concerns, marketing as
well as social, cultural, heritage, environmental and
economic impacts.
> Develop accounting management methods using data to
make decisions. You will undertake financial feasibility
studies, learn about budgeting and even delve into some
forecasting methods. With scenario-based projects, you will
see how accounting principles work in a real world context.
> Understand Human Resource operations in relation
to recruitment, selection and termination. You will explore
employment legislation, contracts, performance planning
and review processes, induction and training programmes.
> Learn about front office procedures and practices to
extend your knowledge of the hotel industry. You will be
trained on reservation systems, learn how to check people in
and out, handle finances, deal with different client groups
and undertake projects with industry.
> Understand the ins and outs of food and beverage
management. Experience the industry through project work,
tasting sessions and industry field trips. Discover the
intricacies of menu planning, theme and design,
liquor licensing, pricing, control process for delivery,
queuing theory, tools for measuring and monitoring
productivity and menu engineering.
> Explore the fundamentals of event management with
practical project work. With a real life project you will
plan, implement and manage an event for a client looking
at production, logistics, sponsorship, budgeting, marketing
and project management considerations.

management professionals. The Graduate Diploma in Event
Management has been designed for those wanting to develop
their expertise in planning, organising and implementing major

Practicum
The practicum is a major component of this programme and
gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in
the complexities of management and events management in a
real world forum. The practicum will allow students to integrate
