Jeremiah 1:4-10 (CEB) 4 The Lord’s word came to me: 5 “Before I created you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I made you a prophet to the nations.” 6 “Ah, Lord God,” I said, “I don’t know how to speak because I’m only a child.” 7 The Lord responded, “Don’t say, ‘I’m only a child.’ Where I send you, you must go; what I tell you, you must say. 8 Don’t be afraid of them, because I’m with you to rescue you,” declares the Lord. 9 Then the Lord stretched out his hand, touched my mouth, and said to me, “I’m putting my words in your mouth. 10 This very day I appoint you over nations and empires, to dig up and pull down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.”

“Don’t be afraid...I’m with you to rescue you.” — Jeremiah 1:8 (CEB)

Welcome to Wells Church. We gather each Sunday to sing and celebrate, to pray and hear the word through scripture. We pray that something in this service touches your heart and helps you to receive the love and grace freely given by God.

One of the ways Wells will celebrate Black History Month is that Heather will preaching “He’s Never Failed Me Yet,” a sermon series based on African American Spirituals.

Dr. Jeff Parker, our minister of counseling, will be facilitating a series of sessions on grief on five or six Wednesday evenings beginning Wednesday, Feb. 6. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Jeff at [email protected].

We will soon be approaching the Lenten season, which is made more meaningful by our shared Lenten Devotionals written by WellsFolk. Please consider submitting a devotional to share this year. We follow the Upper Room format, with a Bible verse, a short 200-word devotional and a prayer. You can email them to [email protected].

The Church Administrative Council will meet from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today in the Tonkel Fellowship Center. Lunch will be provided.

Altar flowers are given by John and Morella Henegan in celebration of the birthday of their daughter-in-law, Audra Henegan. Entrance flowers are given by Frank Puryear in celebration of his mother’s 100th birthday on Feb. 5.

The February edition of WellSpring, our monthly printed newsletter, should be arriving by mail. It also is posted at wellschurch.org. If you would like to be on the mailing list please contact the church office or fill out a pew card. You also may subscribe to “This Week at Wells,” our digital weekly update newsletter, which is sent by email every Tuesday.

In the early 20th century, while earning a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from Harvard, both in history, Carter G. Woodson witnessed how black people were underrepresented in the books and conversations that shaped the study of American history— African Americans were barely part of the story. Dr. Woodson sought to remedy that unfortunate reality.

In 1926, Woodson and others launched a “Negro History Week” to bring attention to the history and contributions of African Americans to the United States. Woodson chose the second week in February, as it encompassed both Frederick Douglass’ birthday on Feb. 14 and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on Feb. 12.

President Gerald Ford decreed Black History Month a national observance in 1976, on both the 50th anniversary of the first iteration and America’s bicentennial year.

“In celebrating Black History Month,” Ford said, “we can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
