Steve Erickson and Russ Hermes started our Rotary Day with warm greetings.
President Randy K. Hansen opened the 44th meeting of his term with the Pledge of
Allegiance, followed by a special acknowledgement to the US Navy’s successful mission
in Bin Laden’s death. The Thought of the Day was presented by Dave Surface. Dave
recognized all Rotary mothers and shared fond memories of his mother. He was one
of 12, so this lady must be a saint! He told us a mother would earn $87,000 per year
for her duties, if she was paid. I believe I should start invoicing my family… It was
good to see Greg Lineberry, who introduced visiting Rotarians and Guests. Mary
Toews visited from Lake Stevens Rotary. Ray Stephanson’s guest was Ron Heller,
Union Bank Marketing; proud mother Kathryn Goforth introduced her son Steve
Goforth. It was good to see Steve back in his firefighter gear after his heath scare.
Announcements: Nick Hansen encouraged all to
sign up for our May 20th Food Drive. Vocational
Committee (CE Panels) will be at Sequoia & Cascade
High, Kathy Webber can be contacted for details.
Dick Schlosser reminded Rotarians about the
Hewitt Crawl, with east meeting west, this evening.
Steve Uberti reported the Scholarship Committee

Kathryn and son Steve, Looking Good
reviewed 35 applicants for our
May 17th Scholarship Awards
Day. Betsy Baker-Bold said
the GSE applications are being
accepted for Germany or
South Korea. Steve Erickson
reported a successful Rotary
Park Clean-up last Saturday
with approximately 2 dozen
Rotarians & kids making a dif-
ference and enjoying a great
BBQ.
Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Rotary Drawing: This is where things got a
little wild and several smiling & chuckling Rotarians sitting at this reporter’s
table asked how these events would be reported… Zak Parpia began
with some convoluted story
about his trip to Hawaii, a
black eye, a missing button on
his shorts, a string bikini, sum-
ming up with
“misunderstanding” and $100
– really. Our Navy hosts at
the gate pulled over Paul Dennis, searched his car, trunk & engine and
had him stand at attention with his arms behind his head; there was no
mention of guns… Judy Tuohy announced the Schack Art Center is now
open. Maddy Metzger-Utt had birthday bucks and happy bucks for a
great scholarship interview day, saying our country will be in good hand
with these students. Dick Lyons shared his (then) 90-year old mother’s
remarks about his bowed legs, citing Shakespeare – no further report is
necessary. Mark Roe had birthday, anniversary and happy bucks for the
Majestic Café relocating to Colby. Bill Dobler had birthday and Rotary
anniversary bucks, determined by some weird calculation. Bob Leach
announced the “Changing of the Guard” will be Thursday, June 30th the
Everett Golf and Country Club with dinner and dancing. It will be a time
to say “goodbye” to President Randy and “hello” to incoming President
Tom Koenig. David Brooks had birthday bucks/announcement bucks
for the March of Dimes walk. Shelley Hutcheson-Smith received
Randy’s birthday card and offered the appropriate birthday bucks. Chuck
Nelson told us about Trinity Lutheran College’s “Raising the Rooftop”
event this evening. Larry O’Donnell reminded Rotarians that John
Conner is would enjoy seeing fellow Rotarians; contact Larry for details.
Dick Lyons and wife Kay won 1st prize at a golf event. Lucky drawing
winners were Sean Kelly,
George Bowden and
Jim Wheeler.
Our Program “1912 Ava-
lanche Disaster” was pre-
sented by Chip Davidson.

tremely heavy and wet. Chip
showed pictures of the worst rail-
road disaster in U S history, which
happened in the Wellington area of
Washington State. Two trains had problems
at the old tunnel when the avalanche hit at
speeds between 80 – 100 mph. Approximate-
ly 124 people died. About 20 people survived
because they were hiking out 20 miles in deep
snow
to
send
out a
tele-
graph
for
help.
A
steam

ered
snow plow worked 4 days to clear the site to
begin recovery efforts. Families accepted their
fate and no lawsuits were filed. It took 10
years to rebuild a new tunnel, which is 8 miles
long. It is the longest railroad
tunnel in the hemisphere.
The old tunnel is used as a
measuring site for the UW.
The area has walking paths
and debris from the wreckage
can still be found at the site.
President Randy adjourned
our meeting with thanks
for a good program, con-
tributions and participa-
tion. Next week’s pro-
gram is entitled: “North
Sound Seawolves”.
