FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers Thank you! It’s been a very busy two weeks since my arrival at Wellers. Each day I have been fortunate enough to get to know many of your wonderful children as I make my way around the school - both during class time and lunch breaks. The mornings and time after school have then been a great opportunity for me to get to know more of our supportive and friendly members of the parent community.

Thank you again to everyone for making me feel so welcome. Student Performance Groups There is a such depth in the cultural talent of our student body here at Wellers Hill State School. This has been evident in any of the number of student performances I have already had the privilege of watching. Our Senior and Junior Choirs both received a Gold Medal, whilst our Vocal Group received a Silver Medal in the recent Creative Generation Voices competition. Our Senior Choir was then invited to perform at the Regional Final on Tuesday night at the Old Museum. Our singers performed beautifully and were a credit to the school. A big thank you to Mrs Gillian Kristensen for the time and effort she puts into our singers. A range of Wellers Hill performers also did our school very proud on the weekend just gone by. Well done to those students who participated in the State Honours Ensemble at the Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, and to both our Vocal Group and Camerata Strings for their performances at the St Paul’s Fete. Thank you to both Mrs Robyn Rosewarne and Mrs Josie Price for their wonderful support of our instrumental students.

With Sympathy Today was a very sad day for many. For those of us in the Wellers Hill State School Community, this morning we paid tribute to the vibrant and passionate life of one of our past students. Also known to many as the beloved daughter of one of our hard-working and committed staff members, Carl. Our deepest sympathies are with Carl and his family, today and always. Today was also the funeral service, with Full Police Honours, for Senior Constable Brett Forte who passed away on Monday 29 May whilst on active duty. Wellers Hill State School flag has been flown at half-mast today as a mark of mourning and respect. Kind Regards Susan Cowley Acting Principal

FOCUS ON SCIENCE

On Wednesday we went with some other year 5 students to Holland Park High for a very exciting Science Masterclass. We enjoyed using fun scientific equipment such as temperature probes and heat guns. The lesson was very interesting and overall it was a great experience.

FOCUS ON SCIENCE

On Wednesday the 31st May 12 grade five students participated in the Science Master class at Holland park High School. We did experiments measuring surface temperature, air temperature and light with a heat gun, a temperature probe and a light meter in different areas. We spoke about adaptations and how plants have evolved to survive in different environments. It was very interesting learning how many plants have adapted to live in difficult environments. I think that Science Master Classes is a good idea and experience because it allows the students that are involved to do things that you can't do in a primary school Science lesson. Band and Strings - Establishing Practice Routines

Parents please help students to establish consistent practice routines at home. Maintaining frequent

and established practices every week is the best way to ensure progress (and therefore satisfaction) on

any instrument. For many of our busy students this will mean balancing other extra-curricular

commitments, so please help your child by creating a clear and consistent practice schedule!

Southside Junior Strings Camp

This Southside Junior Strings camp is running from June 22nd- 23rd (Thurs/Fri) at Marshall RD SS. This is

a fantastic camp for students in their second year of learning a string instrument which is

primarily students in Year 3. All permission notes should have been returned to the office by now and

the $50 fee paid. Students are to organise their own transport and are encouraged to car pool. Please

contact Mrs Price if you require any further information.

No Strings Lessons or Rehearsals in Week 10

Mrs Price will be away in Week 10 at the Southside Junior Strings camp therefore there will be no

lessons or rehearsals on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. Students are encouraged to keep practising

throughout the holidays as the concert is very early in Term 2.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE Hello The sustainability committee and I have noticed so many people turning off taps – at the drinking bubblers and in the toilets - to save water. Great job everyone!!! We have also been doing random checks of the classrooms durin g the lunch breaks and found many, many classrooms with their light, fans and air-conditioning off when there is no one in there. Again - great job everyone!!! The committee is also in the process of setting up a worm farm and are collecting food scraps from the Year Six classes to feed the worms each day. We as a committee are working to reduce the scraps that are thrown in the bin each day. It is loads of fun raising worms too!!! Thanks everyone for helping to save our environment. Cheers Jade and the Sustainability Committee

UNIFORM Shoes: We would like to remind parents that the uniform policy states that black (only) shoes should be worn at school (see below). We are noticing that there are a number of children who are wearing shoes which carry variety of colours other than all black and to that end we will be sending reminder notices home to parents. Please also note the specifications for sports shoes below. School Shoes: Years 1 - 6 Flat, closed in black shoes (joggers / black shoes) and socks (as specified in the policy) must be worn so as not to inhibit students from participating in educational activities.

**PLEASE NOTE: Thongs, slides, heels, loose fashion sandals or open footwear are not permitted.

Prep Footwear: Good, safe secure closed in shoes, preferably with Velcro fastenings.

Joggers to be worn with sports uniform. Joggers must be black and laces must be either white or black.

SUPPORTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

Tips for parents to prevent cyber-bullying

Children socialise very differently these days. A lot of it takes place on the internet, a world that can be very hard to monitor as a parent. Due to the remote nature of the internet, it may be less obvious that your child is being subjected to cyberbullying, so be sure to watch for symptoms and talk to your child if you have any concerns. Cyberbullying involves the use of email, chatroom or social media site messaging on the internet, and text, picture and or video messaging on mobile phones. Unfortunately, it means victims can be bullied even when they're not at school, leaving children very few places to hide. Often, children may be scared to confide in their parents regarding cyberbullying, worried they'll have their computer rights restricted, or their mobile taken away. Symptoms can include:

• Excessive computer use

• Troubled sleep or nightmares

• Depression

• Anti-social behaviour

• Anxiety after using the computer

• Not answering their mobile phone or checking messages

Tips for talking to your child about cyberbullying:

• Educate your child about cyberbullying and reinforce which types of online behaviour are acceptable, and which are not

• Advise them only to give their mobile number and personal email to friends

• Enforce time-off from the computer or their mobile phone if cyberbullied

• Do not open emails from cyberbullies or respond to bullies on Facebook or SMS

• Encourage them only to talk to people they've met in person

• Block the bullies from their Facebook account

What to do next:

• Move your family computer to a public place so you can monitor the times they're online, and their anxiety levels

• Contact the police if the messages are threatening

In the event your child has been a victim of cyberbullying, parents can seek assistance from:

Parentline QLD - 1300 30 1300 Young people are encouraged to call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. http://www.kidshelp.com.au/grownups/getting-help/cyberspace

15

TRAFFIC ACTION GROUP REMINDER: To aid the collection process, we are asking that the family surname is displayed on the on the dashboard or back of the passenger side interior sunvisor which can be put down as the car approaches to assist us to have the children ready to get into cars as they approach. The name cards will be printed by the school and can be collected from school administration Again we are seeking volunteers to assist as marshalls helping to load students and bags into cars to speed up the pick up process and improve safety. Training for the marshalls will be provided.

Next TAG Meeting: 6:00 pm in the Library Annexe before P&C Meeting.

PARKRUN Every week there is a contingent of Wellers Hill families both past and present who participate in Parkrun at Stones Corner and we would love to see you there.
