Environmental Stewardship
What do we mean when we talk about stew-ardship? We mean both environmental protec-tion and human safety. At EMD, we take this concept not as an isolated aspect, but as an integral part of our business. That’s why all the products, packaging and services in this brochure link safety, environmental protection and health along the entire process chain.
Resources Careful use and conservation of resources is a cornerstone of sustainability. We have been committed to steadily lowering our energy consumption and the resulting emissions for over a decade. One of our current goals is to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent between 2006 and 2020.
Recycling On the production level, we have developed a collection system for chemical waste in recent years. Up to sixty percent of the waste we collect is used for reclaiming energy. Our sites recycle all materials possible: paper, glass, met-al and plastic used during manufacture.
Responsibility A main focus of our responsibility rests on our products; we therefore test the quality of every product before it is launched. Numerous facili-ties currently operate to ISO14001 standards and our main U.S. manufacturing site has been awarded RC-14001 status.
We try to consider the entire product lifecycle, from manufacturing through storage to dis-posal. Our goal is to aid you in this process. We provide technical support and numerous documents on safe handling and use. In this brochure, you will discover some of the ways we bring stewardship to the laboratory. Our commitment is to deliver high quality products and services that help you work in a safer, more environment-friendly way – today, tomorrow and the day after. For more information, see www.emdchemicals.com/gogreen
EMD protects you and the environment. Long before concepts like corporate responsibility and corporate citizenship became widely known, our company was living these values. Every decision we make keeps the future in mind, that is how we sustain stewardship.

Products
Good products don’t just give you reliable results. They also do it in a way that will affect people and na-ture least. They deliver accurate results, yet contain fewer toxic chemicals. Or they measure the content precisely, yet can be dis-posed of safely. To make sure EMD products do both, we offer compre-hensive handling and safety guide-lines. That way, laboratories can play an active role in protecting their local environment.
This is also the approach behind Green Chemistry – the twelve prin-ciples set out in 1991 by the US Envi-ronmental Protection Agency (EPA). The core idea is to continually re-duce the ecological footprint of chemical products, and to gradually reduce their risks until one day, they can be eliminated completely.
At EMD, we support these aims with both scientific research and new product solutions. One practical example is EMD bio ethanol, which is made from sugar cane. This “green”
solvent is based on renewable raw material, has low toxicity, and is also environmentally friendly and CO2 neutral.
The following pages present a selec-tion of top quality EMD products that are “good" in more ways than one: for safety, for you, and for the environment.

When you work with culture media in powder form, powder particles frequently spread through the surrounding air. This can cause big problems, since the media often con-tains hazardous substances which are unhealthy to inhale and may cause allergic reactions when they come in contact with the skin, eyes and ears. The solution? Gran-ulated media. This patented, exclusive product combines safety and optimal perform-ance while offering clear advantages:
• Significant reduction of powder dispersal• Minimized risk of inhaling hazardous or toxic chemicals• Minimized risk of allergic reactions• Quicker and more homogenous than powder

Packaging
Obviously, good products need good packaging – but what makes pack-aging good?
• Virtually reliable protection• Lightweight, inert materials• Virtually no risk of contamination• Less and recycleable material that
needs to be disposed afterwards
The challenge involves finding safe packaging for every product – while at the same time doing justice to its specific proper-
ties. The only way to do that is by studying the materials you use in depth.
That’s why we test all packaging thoroughly before we approve it for use. We run temperature load tests on glass bottles, for instance. Con-duct pressure resistance tests for reinforced cardboard. Calculate the fracture force (OPC = One Point Cut) for vials. Measure the impact resist-ance of the cardboard packaging we use for hazardous materials. Obtain
NFPA certificates on our returnable container systems by fire testing containers on a regular basis. For all these tests we’ve set up our own test bed.
Our accomplishment has been the development of high quality, reliable packaging that protects people and the environment throughout the entire product lifecycle – during transport and storage, in the labora-tory, and eventual disposal.
Other than products, does EMD have additional environmental friendly innovations?
Yes! We test and develop new packaging innovations to find more economical and reusable ways to protect and transport our products. That way, you benefit from the perfect synergy of products matched with packaging.
That’s what’s in it for you. EMD Chemicals

Polycoated – keeping liquids safely within
Sustainable protection
Glass bottles still have their place in the labora-tory as a highly inert material for daily use. The biggest problem is breakage – or rather, the safe-ty risks that glass shards and escaping chemicals pose for employees and the environment. An option that combines the best properties of glass and plastic is to use polycoated glass bottles from EMD.
Benefits for you:• Substantially reduces the possibility of glass
shards harming users or the environment• Airtight screw caps and additional bottle
threading on EMD bottles reduces backoff and keeps caps tight
• Polycoated bottles can be recycled and dis-posed of in the same way as standard bottles
Polycoated bottles perform two jobs at the same time – protecting your personal health and maintaining high purity of the chemical while being environmentally friendly.

EMD Chemicals’ all corrugate honeycomb design allows for the replacement of cumbersome EPS (expanded polysty-rene) or foam inserts with specially engineered cardboard inserts. The new inserts provide superior protection to each solvent bottle within the carton. Unlike foam inserts, which are bulky and difficult to store, the honeycomb inserts can be flattened along with the outer carton for easy handling, storage and disposal. The entire carton, inside and out, is completely recyclable since it's card-board. You can now eliminate the hassle and the cost of the waste disposal of foam inserts.
Benefits for you:• 100% Recyclable Corrugated Cardboard• Rugged Construction• Patented Honeycomb Design• Environmentally Friendly• Folds Flat for Easy Storage• Reduces Packaging Waste and Handling Costs
