%lementary symbols may be su$$lemented by a symbol characterising the sha$e of the e)ternal
surface* or sha$e of the weld+
Note
The absence of a supplementary symbol means that the shape of the weld surface does not
need to be indicated precisely.

To s$ecify a weld detail it is necessary to show a weld symbol together with -
an arrow line ' com$leted by an arrow head
two reference lines consisting of-one continuous line
one dashed line . ( see e!ception "elo#$
The arrow line /oins one end of the continuous reference line to form an angle with it+

4. Po&'t'o! o* t,e "##o l'!e
The $osition of the arrow line with res$ect to the weld is no s$ecial significance e/e+tfor
single bevel or single-J welds+ "or these* arrow line has to $oint to the $late that is $re$ared+
This same detail can be indicated by moving the $osition of the dashed line (other side! ' as
shown below -
6. Po&'t'o! o* t,e &$%ol 't, #e&+e/t to t,e #e*e#e!/e l'!e
The symbol is $laced either above or beneath the reference line as follows -
The symbol is $laced on the continuous line side of the reference line if the weld (weld face!
is on the arrow side of the /oint
The symbol is $laced on the dashed line side if the weld (weld face! is on the other side of
the /oint
This is illustrated below -
NoteFor symmetrical welds, the dashed line is unnecessary - & should be omitted as shown.

These are written on the left-hand side of the symbol (before the symbol! and certain letters are
used to indicate $articular dimensions* namely -
s 0 de$th of $enetration
Butt welds are to have complete penetration unless the symbol shows a penetration depth
a = throat thickness (of a fillet weld!
Z = leg length (of a fillet weld!
s can also be used to show the de$th of $enetration required for a dee$ $enetrationfillet weld -
