ATF

The AWS Accredited Test Facility (ATF) program establishes minimum requirements for test facilities, their personnel and

equipment to qualify for accreditation to test and qualify welders. This program is open to all qualified test facilities that may be a

part of an independent laboratory, manufacturing plant, educational institution, or other entity.

The AWS Accredited Test Facility (ATF) program requires that a facility implements a quality assurance program that meets the requirements established in the AWS QC4-89, Standard for the Accreditation of Testing Facilities. The requirements include that the facility has a Quality Manual that controls the activities related to the testing of welders in the facility according to AWS QC7, Standard for AWS Certified Welders.

Internationally ca. 30 facilities (5 in Mexico, 4 times in China and Peru)International prices for initial audit + Auditor + intermediate audits (after 1st and 2nd year) ca. 5000$ + direct travel expenses.

CWF

The requirements for the AWS Certified Welding Fabricator (CWF) program are set forth in an AWS QC17, Specification for AWS

Accreditation of Certified Welding Fabricators and AWS B5.17, Specification for the Qualification of Welding Fabricators.

These standards define the requirement for a company's compliance with welding-related functions and assures, through third party assessment, that the Welding Fabricator has the personnel, organization, experience, procedures, knowledge, equipment, capability, and commitment to conduct proper weldments.

Internationally ca. 26 fabricators (5 in Mexico, 4 times in China, no one in Europe).

International prices for initial audit + Auditor ca. 4000$ + direct travel expenses.

CRAW

Applicable requirements are included in the AWS QC19, Specification for Certification of Robotic Arc Welding Personnel Program and AWS D16.4, Specification for the Qualification of Robotic Arc Welding Personnel, and supporting administrative documents.

No international centers listed yet. USA List link does not work.

Costs: applicants are responsible for auditor’s fees and travel expenses including airfare, transportation, lodging, and meals. Auditor’s fees are:International: $400 for audit (one day) and $200 per travel day (up to three days)

CWI course and examination

Accredited Testing Facilities (ATF) are organizing one week courses ending with one day examination. There is also numerous possibilities to

prepare before an examination through attending for example online learning as well as pre-seminars.

Usually it is 4-6 days of schooling and one day for examination.

An examination consist of three parts as shown on next slide. For each part there is the same amount of time to complete: 2 hours.

Quick comparison of differences for PQR qualification by AWS and ASME

There are differences between AWS and ASME approach to welding issues. Examples of important differences AWS – ASME pertaining to qualification of welding procedures for GMAW/FCAW processes without CVN testing are summarized below:

- GMAW and FCAW are considered separate processes- Classification of electrode are also splited and are essential- Change in electrode diameter (for FCAW only increase)- Change in the amperage more than 10%- Change from CV to CC output- Change in the voltage more than 7%- Change in the travel speed more than 25%

- Change in the gas flow rate: increase more than 50% and decrease more than 20%

- Change in groove type or to square groove- Change exceeding tolerances for groove design involving decrease in

groove angle and root opening as well as increase in the root face.- Decrease from preheating and interpass temperature by more than 15°C- Product form of test coupon is essential i.e. plate or tubular - Positions are restricted in range and dependant if tubular (pipe or box) or

plate- Welding plate test coupon with thickness of 25,4mm and over give us

range 3mm to unlimited- For NDT issues VT and either RT or UT are mandatory for PQR

qualification.
