Brief History & Overview

Formed on February 23, 1905 by attorney Paul P. Harris as the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois

World's first professional service club.

Mr Harris wanted to capture same friendly spirit he experienced in small towns of his youth.

Rotary name came from early practice of “rotating” meetings between member's offices.

Brief History & Overview

Rotary's popularity spread quickly. Within a decade, clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg.

By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents. The Rotary International name was adopted a year later.

By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members.

Today, 1.2 million Rotarians belong to over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary International is the world's oldest, largest and most successful professional business service organization.

The Four-Way Test

In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions that can be applied to almost any situation:

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

What Is A Rotarian?

Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in serving our communities, as well as internationally through global service projects, while greatly enriching our personal and professional lives.

If there's one thing that all Rotary club members have in common, we take action. As community volunteers we reach out to neighbors in need. We build, support, and organize. We save lives. We work locally and globally.
