I found a worn-out wooden tray at a flea market recently. One can personalize this project by using old photographs,
personal letters and other ephemera. I’m always looking for an excuse to paste an im-age of a dog onto something. so this was the perfect project for me.
MAtErIAlS• Clean wooden tray• Bits of paper ephemera (wallpaper, printed napkins, photos, greeting cards)• Fabric to fit bottom of tray and extra scraps as needed• Embroidery floss and needle
• Decoupage medium• Small foam brush• Scissors• (Optional) Cut glass to fit inside of tray
DIrEctIoNS1. Cut fabric to fit bottom of tray.2. Apply decoupage medium to bottom of tray using the foam brush and smooth
fabric on top, pushing out bubbles with your fingertips.3. Cut shapes (see my dog) from wallpaper or fabric scraps.4. Arrange your image on the fabric- covered tray and glue down with glue.5. Brush on three or four layers of decoupage medium, letting it dry between coats.
I had a piece of glass cut to fit the bottom of the tray for extra protection.
Make one of these for yourself and anoth-er one for a dear friend. Great for pink lemon-ade or martinis!

Having spent the last decade try-ing to help Dad live as indepen-dently as possible has been one
of the most challenging dilemmas in my life. When his dementia took away his ability to live alone and he could no longer recognize me, I choose to move him into a nursing home.
During those years, when he could live alone, but needed a little extra help, a community such as Heritage Farms would have been the perfect place for him to call home. He was stubborn and wouldn’t move out of the home he and mom had shared for nearly 60 years, but in reality, it was just too much for him to take care of — or be safe in.
Heritage Farms, in Blue Springs, is a gaited community for seniors 55 and old-er. Residents enjoy the freedom of living independently, yet don’t have the worries of lawn upkeep or snow removal and can even have meals delivered three times a day. Having realized the need for more wheelchair accessible homes, developer
Mark Yancik introduces four new villas in Heritage Farms, which incorporate a uni-versal design and a luxury lifestyle. Read more on pages 8 and 9.
I must admit that tilling the garden has never been one of my jobs. My boyfriend always tills while I lay out the plants and stakes but this year he decided to give me a turn and pushing the tiller, I found, is not an easy job. Maureen Gilmer talks about finding a tiller that will do the task at hand, no matter what condition the soil is in. I now understand the importance of finding one that will aggressively chew up the ground without having to go over it more than a couple of times. Read more on page 10.
I’ve never thought of whether or not bugs were good or bad — basically, I just don’t want them on me, in my house or in my garden. Apparently there are some insects that are beneficial to have around as they will serve as “police” of other bugs and eat those that are classified as bad. Read more on page 4.
Growing up with a mom who had turned the entire basement into a craft room brought about many years of watching her decoupage everything from jewelry boxes to cabinets. I thought it was a lost art until I ran across an article on rejuve-nating an old serving tray found in a flea market. Actually it’s an easy process and the creativity is endless on ways to de-coupage. Check it out on page 2.
One of my new favorite websites is www.realsimple.com. I love finding new uses for ordinary things and this week’s tip on page 14 lists several ways to put dryer sheets to use other than with clothes. Also on that same page is important in-formation about deck safety. Now that more time is being spent outdoors, check to make sure your entertaining areas sur-vived the winter and are safe to use.

I s there really such a thing as a good bug?Definition: A nice bug does no harm,
meaning it’s garden-friendly and doesn’t eat any of your plants or crops. A really good bug eats those insects that make mincemeat of your plants or crops.
But understand: Lots of good-bug behavior is hard to find. That’s because much of it is out of sight. The stealth stage of most of these in-sects is the larvae, and that’s why life cycles are key. Even the most avid gardeners may not be interested in the reproductive cycles of the green lacewing, but when they realize that one prolific female lacewing could be responsible for wiping out 40,000 pests each season, hey, they get it: That’s a great bug!
Here’s a guide:ladybug: Both larvae and adults feed on
aphids, the former devouring hundreds during development and the latter consuming thou-sands. Also favored are thrips, spider mites, mealy bugs, soft scales, whitefly and a wide va-riety of other soft-bodied, plant-eating insects. By summer’s end, they may eat pollen.
Braconid Wasp: Braconid wasps have such a strong reputation as killers of pests that they are widely used in agriculture. A few adults prey on other adult insects, but most feed on pollen. It’s the larvae that are extremely valuable con-
trols of garden, farm and forest pests.Syrphid Fly or Hover Fly: Imagine a pest-
killing machine devouring enormous numbers of aphids, up to 400 during this stage.
Green lacewing: As with most garden “po-lice” insects, the life cycle is the secret, and the law enforcement is all in the larval stage. Lar-vae, often called “aphid lions,” are among the most efficient predators of aphids. They also prey on the eggs and immature stages of small, soft-bodied insects such as mealy bugs, thrips, spider mites and leaf-hoppers.
Ground Beetle: Why they’re good: A pest killer in two stages of its life cycle, this beetle enjoys snails, slugs, cutworms, gypsy-moth larvae, root maggots, tent caterpillars, Colo-rado potato beetle larvae and other pests that spend a stage of their life cycle in the soil.
Spined Soldier Bug: Another two-stage pest killer, the spined soldier bug effectively targets more than 100 insect pests, including caterpillars and grubs of gypsy and night-flying moths, Mexican bean and Colorado potato beetles and sawflies. It, too, has earned a place in the ranks of commercially available pest controllers, especially in the control of tent cat-erpillars. An adult uses its proboscis to pierce prey and then suck out the body fluids. On the downside, they sometimes will eat benefi-cial insects and occasionally their own young. Nymphs begin voracious feeding when 4 to 5 days old.

surprisingly colorful, compact space-saving ideas.
The Grand sofa by Swedish design superstar Monica Forster is made up of asymmetrical left and right components and an ottoman that seems to fit into the main frame of the sofa.
The sofa comes in a right, a left and a straight version with an accompanying footstool and an optional divan. The variable components allow for a variety of shapes.

QI have a plumbing issue that has been driving me crazy since I moved into my present home. My hot-water heater is in the garage, and my master shower
is on the opposite side of the house. I end up running the shower and waiting about three minutes until the water finally gets hot! I seem to recall reading in one of your previous columns about a device a plumb-er can install to fix this problem. can you
please explain how this device works, and how to go about getting one installed?
AWaiting for hot water in a shower is frustrating, and it can waste hun-dreds of gallons of water a year. So, this isn’t just a comfort issue;
it’s also a water-conservation problem that should be addressed.
First, let me bring everyone up to speed on why, in some bathrooms, it seems to take
A recirculating water pump will ease shower frustration
forever to get hot water flowing to the show-erhead. It depends on how close your water heater is to your shower. If the water heater is in the basement right below the shower, you should get hot water fairly quickly. But if the water heater and shower are on opposite sides of the home, then hot water must make its way through long lengths of piping before it reaches your shower.
In new construction, plumbers can install a recirculation system with feed and return hot-water lines. This setup can keep a constant flow of hot water to the bathroom area. How-ever, in existing homes it’s usually not practical to open up walls and floors to add hot-water return lines. So what you can use is a hot-wa-ter recirculating pump.
For a master plumber, installing one is a fairly easy job, and the pump system itself is affordable for most homes. This type of recir-culation pump pulls hot water from the water heater, while pushing the cooler water through the home’s existing cold-water lines, right back to the water heater to complete the loop. This can give you available hot water closer to the shower.
Recirculating systems should be installed only by a licensed master plumber, and along with a licensed master electrician to wire in the pump itself.
Bottom line: Just ask your plumber to install a recirculating hot-water pump, to cool down your shower frustrations.

First impressions are important and the same holds true when you are show-casing your home for a potential sale.
While larger home improvement projects are often necessary to catch the eye of someone in the market for a new home, they require a great deal of time and money.
Sometimes simple cleaning and organi-zation is all that is needed for your home to become more appealing to potential buyers.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:Simplify. Begin by de-cluttering your
home. By removing personal items that might distract prospective buyers, you’ll help them focus on how they think the home might look when they move in. You don’t want buyers to focus on possessions that you’ll be taking with you when you move.
Neutralize. When showing your home to others, it’s best to set your personal tastes aside by decorating in a way that will appeal to a broad range of people. Think about re-placing strong patterns with solid colors on items like bedding, carpets and drapes. It might also be a good call to store that dra-matic piece of art somewhere out of sight. You can show it off again when you move into your new house.
A photogenic home. Many potential
buyers will make decisions on which homes they would like to look at by looking at photos posted online. Do whatever you can to make your home sparkle in the images you and
your real estate agent select for your listing. Focus on glass and metal surfaces that will add shine to your photos.
Areas that must sparkle. While it’s im-
portant to keep the entire home spotless, there are two rooms in particular that require special attention: the kitchen and the bath-room. In a recent survey, Mr. Clean asked consumers which room they would clean first if moving into a new home. Of the more than 1,000 participants, an impressive 41 percent responded the kitchen and 38 percent said the bathroom. When selling your home, it is always important to make the extra effort in these two rooms; you’ll never know if it will be a make or break a deal.
Scent. Whether they know it or not, people entering your home will notice more than just appearances. Attractive scents can create good feelings. Candles, diffusers, potpourri and cookies all offer inviting and familiar aro-mas. Use a cleaner with a pleasant scent to keep your home smelling fresh.
Details matter. Eliminate any small im-perfections that might cause uneasiness with potential buyers by replacing broken light bulbs, fixing loose doorknobs or get-ting your closet door moving smoothly on it tracks. Even something as minor as a little mess in the microwave could turn off a pro-spective renter or buyer, so make sure every place you can think of is squeaky clean.

Surrounded by blooming flowers, beau-tiful landscaping and a community that cares, Heritage Farms offers the oppor-
tunity to live barrier-free with four new villas, designed specifically for wheelchair accessi-bility and the freedom to live independently.
Developed by Mark Yancik, Heritage Farms is located in the heart of Blue Springs. As a
gaited senior community, for those 55 and older, Heritage Farms offers the opportunity to live in a secure environment while enjoying life at it’s fullest.
“Our residents enjoy the comfort of know-ing their neighbors by a first name basis,” Laura Rodriguez, Move-in coordinator at Heritage Farms said. “The residents enjoy their privacy as well as being able to gather for social activities at the clubhouse.”
In the center of this 36-villa community,

a historic home, which has been restored and remodeled, provides the residents a clubhouse containing an exercise room and parlor room equipped with computers, flat screen TV and a fireplace. The multi-purpose room is used for monthly coffee get-togeth-ers, bingo and on-going activities.
The newly built handicap-accessible villas feature Berber carpeting for easier mobility, walk-in showers with a sit down bench, cut-out sinks, lowered light switches and raised outlets as well as lowered counters in the kitchen and bathroom.
A choice between one and two bedroom villas, the handicap accessible homes come equipped with new appliances, front and back doors, in-ground sprinkler systems and the opportunity to enjoy a maintenance-free community while having the peace of mind that by choosing to live at Heritage Farms, seniors can gracefully age in place.
“Every resident at Heritage Farms receives a Life Beacon,” Rodriguez explains. “This first alert device can be worn as a beaded neck-lace or worn like a watch. It can detect a sud-den fall and instantly the enclosed speaker provides assistance with someone on-line
asking if assistance is needed. The GPS sys-tem also allows loved ones to check on your whereabouts if they can’t reach you at home.”
The rental agreement provides residents with the opportunity to choose several differ-ent levels of amenities including three meals a day, housekeeping and linen service.
“We also provide free transportation ser-vice through OATS, for trips to the grocery store, doctor appointments or shopping,” Ro-driguez said.
The activity calendar is always full of op-tions residents can choose to participate in from guest speakers to potluck dinners.
“Residents can also reserve the clubhouse for their own events or gatherings,” she said. “It’s an extension of their own home.”
Although a one-year lease is required, resi-dents who find they have to move because of the need for assisted living can opt out with a 30-day written notice.

For years, I begged, borrowed and was tempted to steal a rototiller when the time came to put in my annual food
garden each spring. So I’ve had the opportu-nity to try a lot of them.
The lightweight brands just skittered across the top of the clay. Another with cheap steel had whole tines fold in half or break off the turning shaft altogether. I finally got to try a pricey rear-tine model that was far easier to use than those bucking, jump-
ing front-tine monsters. I ripped the whole transmission out of that one.
Then I spotted a battered old tiller at an estate sale. It was a front-tine brute, en-crusted with dried mud and rust, the paint so chipped that labels had worn off. Though I had no idea what model or horsepower it was, that didn’t matter. The one thing that made me buy it was the brand: Ariens.
The Ariens family ran a foundry in Wiscon-sin until the Depression put it out of business
in the early 1930s. The family started again in the garage by inventing the first walk-be-hind tiller. In those days, the main crops were tilled with the farm tractor.
The small tiller revolutionized farmers’ ability to grow crops in smaller spaces be-cause of its tight turning radius. It trans-formed the family food garden, and the com-pany flourished with World War II “victory gardens.” Naturally, farmers were skeptical of all new machines, so the Ariens brothers used their steel-making skill to forge this product to last.
The Ariens tiller cost me $125 at the sale. My husband took the tiller home, cleaned it up and rehabilitated it with parts from a lo-cal engine shop. Using a $10 rebuild kit, air filter, starter fluid and Gunk engine protector, he got the carburetor rebuilt and filled the tank with gas. That Ariens fired right up, and I used it to till my garden singlehandedly for years to come.
This tiller with its powerful engine and thick tines turned on a heavy shaft the size of a car axel. I could completely till my enor-mous country garden in one day. That Ari-ens, ugly as it was, became my most cher-ished possession.
Few small engines today can lay claim to that kind of longevity. And even fewer can be so easily repaired because parts for Ariens machines are still available.

n Remove gunk from the soleplate of an iron. With the setting on low, rub the iron over the dryer sheet until the residue disappears, and you’re left with a pristine press.
n Roll up one sheet per slipper, sneaker, or loafer, insert, and forget about stinky shoes. (Bonus uses: Toss them in hampers, on closet shelves, in diaper bags.)
n Stop static cling on clothes—or tame flyaway hair—by rubbing a sheet over the problem area.
n An easy way to keep the work area clean. Saw dust at a work station sweeps up so fast with one pass of a used fabric softener sheet.
n To prevent tangles, run a threaded needle through a sheet before you begin stitching.
n Remove obstinate soap buildup from glass shower doors by sprinkling a few drops of water onto a used fabric-softener sheet and scrubbing.
n If fabric-softener sheets make your clothes smell nice in the dryer, just think about what they could do in your dresser. Slip a few fresh ones between folded clothes.
n Prevent your beloved volumes from acquiring a musty smell by inserting a fabric- softener sheet between the pages.

yElloW BrIck roADCreating your own pretty path isn’t always easy.
Here’s how to make one appear like magic, wherever you’d like. Want to build a path or walkway that looks like bricks? Use pre-packaged concrete mix and one of the easy-to-use concrete molds on the market today.
Styles range from stepping stones to brickwork. Molds are 2-feet-square and each uses an 80-pound bag of concrete mix. With a square shovel, dig a chan-nel for the mold, put in place and fill with concrete. As it sets up, remove the mold while the concrete’s still wet. Repeat over and over again, until you’ve gotten from where you started to where you want to go. And that’s the On The House tip for today.
– From www.onthehouse.com
DEck SAFEty cHEckWith recent reported accidents, wherein
decks collapsed, underscore the point that a deck safety check is a must. National building codes for decks, porches and balconies require them to support at least 40 pounds per square foot. This means a balcony packed with party-goers should be safe as long as there’s enough room to allow moving around. And, that is why proper plans, building permits, inspections and adhering to codes is so important. But as decks age, even properly built structures can become
unsafe. Boards weather and rot, insects destroy wood integrity and fasteners and railings loos-en. The result is a potentially weakened structure and a disaster waiting to happen.
