EastSide Arts delivers an excellent programme of arts activities throughout the year, bringing the arts direct to the communities of east Belfast and encouraging local artists, writers, musicians and performers to develop and promote their talent. The annual EastSide Arts Festival is always one of the most popular highlights. The ambition of this year’s festival reflects the confidence it has developed, having quickly established itself amongst Northern Ireland’s major multi-arts festivals. The Arts Council, as principal funder of EastSide Arts through Exchequer and National Lottery funds, is proud to be associated with an event and an organisation that continues so successfully to expand opportunities for people to access and to participate in a wide range of high-quality arts, and which is a key contributor to the creative, cultural and economic life of east Belfast.

The Belfast Community Gospel Choir has literally taken Northern Ireland by storm as they spread a message of joy and peace through their music.

Their performances are charged with passion and energy. If you love foot-stomping, hand-clapping music, well-known classic songs and a good helping of laughter, then BCGC delivers! They are led by director and founder, Marie Lacey, who herself was born and raised in east Belfast.

The Choir have made many TV appearances, performed for Heads of State, Royalty, corporate events as well as charity and church concerts. They have also performed in New York City and Boston.

Join us for an afternoon with one of Ireland’s leading crime writers. Claire McGowan, author of the Paula Maguire series, will be in conversation with David Torrans from No Alibis Bookstore. Unique within the crime fiction genre, Claire portrays a forensic psychologist at work in books that Peter James has called ‘astonishing, powerful and immensely satisfying’. A celebration of the poetry of Thomas Carnduff.

Born in 1886, Thomas Carnduff did many unskilled jobs in in his life including working in the Belfast Shipyard, which provided inspiration for his many poems and earned him the nickname, The Shipyard Poet. His lyrical writing reflects his love of Belfast and its people.

Peacock Angell have set a number of Carnduff’s poems to music, and will perform them with Contact Singers Choir, brass musicians from The Ulster Orchestra and narration by Sam and Joan McCready. Sid Peacock (from Northern Ireland) and Ruth Angell (from Derbyshire) marry the bright blue shores of County Down with the High Peaks and green fields of Derbyshire in their music. Peacock Angell will be joined by Steve Tromans (piano), Rohan Armstrong (bass) and James Anderson (drums). Ciaran returns from California where he and his band regularly pack the house in San Francisco. A local lad who began his career 30 years ago in the Errigle Inn, he composes and performs a fabulous blend of rock, bossa, trad and jazz, earning him well deserved appearances with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Arlo Guthrie and Nancy Griffith.

We plan to make the most of our unusual rooftop setting with beautiful music from singer-songwriter Mandy Bingham, words from novelist and urban gardener, Kelly McCaughrain, a short story from local writer Jan Carson, themed edibles from cake artist and keen forager, Hilary Copeland and some other natural treats. We want to hear from you! Belfast’s Poetry NI and Galway’s Over the Edge Readings have got together to create this evening of poems inspired by Belfast. And all we need to make it work is you! Poets Colin Dardis, Susan Millar DuMars and Geraldine O’ Kane will share some of their best stuff. And then it’s your turn, as host Kevin Higgins invites Open Mic participants to take to the stage for five minutes each to read their own poems, or a favourite published poem. Last year Glenn and Neil co-created the highly-acclaimed and award-nominated, Long Story Short: The Belfast Opera. They also previously collaborated on The Great and First Object, for the Linen Hall Library. For this performance, they draw on their extensive individual repertoires - words and music on humour and love and loss and dismay and hope and wonderment.

Glenn Patterson is the author of ten novels and three works of non-fiction. He has written stories and plays for Radio 3 and Radio 4 and was the co-writer of Good Vibrations. He is director of the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s.

Belfast-born Neil Martin is a composer and musician with an international reputation. A cellist and an uilleann piper, Neil has collaborated with artists from Bryn Terfel and Christy Moore to all the principle orchestras in Ireland. A one-off chance to hear two acclaimed songwriters in a wonderful acoustic setting.

Hannah’s voice and her unique melodies have prompted comparisons to the likes of Regina Spektor and Laura Marling, while her fiercely personal lyrics and ‘quietly captivating’ (Culture NI) performances have seen her following blossom across Ireland and beyond.

Anthony recently celebrated the release of his seventh album ‘Ink’ with a sold-out launch concert at the Lyric Theatre. This new collection finds him in top form on a series of stripped back, acoustic-based songs dealing with the big themes of love, loss and happiness.

The Swing Gals all-girl vocal collective is renowned for their close harmonies and sophisticated interpretations of jazz, swing, pop and easy listening favourites. Born into a Protestant family in Dee Street, Robert Harbinson is one of our finest writers. This poignant new drama explores how recent migrants navigate support systems through translation.

Staged for the EastSide Arts Festival as a rehearsed reading, this is a unique chance to see behind the scenes of the creation of a new performance, and to inform that process. He may wield an acoustic guitar but Ciaran Lavery doesn’t conform to the sensitive singer-songwriter archetype. In 2014, Lavery’s Kosher EP and Not Nearly Dark album went global, with the tracks ‘Shame’ and ‘Left For America’ racking up more than 60 million listens on Spotify.

Brian Ballard, who still lives in his birthplace of east Belfast, is a rich colourist interested in the contrasting colours and textures found in simple subjects. Painting directly on to the canvas with vigorous brushstrokes, he uses bold slashes of rich colour with fluid paint in which the bristles always leave a mark of their speed and pressure, yet they are subject to a structural order, as well as a pictorial depth. This exhibition, launching the new gallery space at the EastSide Visitor Centre, features new works that have not been exhibited before. Exhibition continues until 16 September. Carol Graham works across genres and her ever-evolving images appeal to a wide range of art lovers. C.S. LEWIS BUS TOUR

Clive Staples Lewis was born and grew up in east Belfast, in the shadow of Cave Hill and the shipyard. Join local historian and tour guide, Laura Spence, on this bus tour which visits places associated with his early life. The tour will stop at the C.S. Lewis murals on the Newtownards Road and will conclude with a brief exploration of C.S. Lewis Square and its stunning ‘Narnian’ sculptures.

This tour uncovers a hidden Gaelic history of east Belfast. Discover how the ill-starred chieftain Conn O’Neill lost almost everything as we visit the site of his long-lost castle, bridge, church and unmarked grave. East Belfast is covered in place-names with Irish language roots, like Glentoran, Cluan Place, Ballymacarrett and Cregagh. Many are townlands, which were divided by ancient streams, walls and hedges. Discover the boundaries of these townlands and their meanings as the bus crosses the invisible lines between them.

Join your guide Lynn Corken on this fascinating journey through the East Belfast of Van’s youth; a wonderful opportunity to visit some of the places that the singer knew as a child growing up in this part of the city. Join local guide Peter Wood on a fascinating bus tour of east Belfast to find out more about the life and career of local lad, George Best, who legendary Brazilian footballer Pele famously called ‘the world’s greatest player, ever’. You’ll see George’s local school and playing fields, Spence’s Chip Shop, Desano’s Ice-Cream Parlour, the Ambassador Cinema and of course, have a look around his family home in the Cregagh Estate. Whilst many places still exist, others are gone. But the warmth and humour of east Belfast folk remains strong, as does the pride they feel for ‘the Belfast boy’.

As well as being a regular at the Empire’s Society Sessions, Sonja has played at Sunflower Festival and OntSofa in London. She recently performed in Nashville, New Orleans and San Francisco and featured on the Norm’s Rare Guitars YouTube channel in L.A. She is currently working on a new EP to be released in Autumn 2017.

Sonja will also be supporting Kaz Hawkins in the Park Avenue Hotel on Friday 4 August as a part of the EastSide Arts Festival.

BEN CUTLER Winner of U16 Banbridge Buskfest 2015, finalist of the 2016 UK Song Academy U13 Songwriters’ Competition and twice performer at the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, Ben will be performing covers and original material.

Also in EastSideHIGHLIGHTS AT HOMEAfter the success of the 2016 Highlight’s at Home programme, we’re delighted to announce that some of our key contributors will be performing small taster shows in nursing homes, residential care facilities and Fold homes throughout east Belfast again this year. Staff, residents and their families will be able to participate in the Eastside Arts Festival without even leaving home.

A massive thank you to all the performers volunteering their time to make these sessions happen; Anthony Toner, Hannah McPhillimy, Liz Weir, Jan Carson and Katie Richardson. Hosford Homeless Project invites you to a live and interactive public art installation in the Rooftop Garden of the Skainos Centre, which will be exploring, celebrating and bringing to life the rich and diverse social history of east Belfast in the 1950’s. Created by Hosford Life Skills Co-coordinator Arlene Megaw and artist Ciara O’Malley, and building on the success of last year’s ‘One Square Meal’ installation, Tales from the Living Room promises to be yet another EastSide Arts Festival highlight.

Hosford Homeless Project asks for a donation of a blanket from those attending the event, for use in the hostel.

The installation can be viewed until Friday 11 August
