Page 2: Welcome Week Brochure

Welcome toHofstra UniversityYou can finally Make Your Move at Hofstra University and gain access to almost 200 student clubs and organizations, explore the New York metropolitan area, and connect with thousands of other students who call Hofstra home.

We have planned an exciting week full of programs and activities that will help you get better acquainted with the Hofstra campus and resources and become an involved student. Please look through this program and plan your week by selecting events that interest you. Be sure to not miss the “Required” and “Pride” events.

Make sure you have your HofstraCard with you. You will need it for identification, meal/snack purchases, and entry into events and residence halls (if you live on campus).

This week, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will serve as your Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs). Leaders will assist you during your move in, help run programs and events, lead discussions, and help you begin to Make Your Move here at Hofstra. You will meet your WWL at 4 p.m. today (August 30). Your check-in information will provide the meeting location. Look for the “Welcome Week Leader” symbol throughout this program for scheduled meals and events. Take time to get to know your leader and build friendships with your group members! But, most important, have fun and Make Your Move!

About Our StaffKaitlin FrischThis California beach bunny traded in her Old Navy flip-flops and Cole surfboard for her first pair of snow boots and a parka nearly four years ago when she first came to Hofstra from her sunny hometown of Petaluma, California. Kaitlin is thrilled to have returned for her third year as Welcome Week coordinator and hopes this one will be the biggest success yet. This fall, she will continue to pursue a B.F.A. in theater arts as well as a double minor in art history and English. (Thank goodness the Axinn Library has coffee for her during those late-night study sessions.) When she is not studying, she can be seen attending the Danceworks, Spectrum Players and Masquarade club meetings or trying a new fitness class at the Mack Fitness Center. Most notably, she will be a part of the Drama and Dance Department’s production of Farragut North, which opens at the end of September.

Liz WeedenAfter growing up on beautiful Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York, Liz Weeden wanted a change of scenery from the farms and vineyards and decided to attend Hofstra on Long Island. Entering her senior year – wow, those four years flew by! – she is pursuing a double major in public relations and global studies with a minor in marketing. Since studying abroad on the European Odyssey during sophomore year, Liz has caught the “travel bug” and hopes to work in the travel PR industry when she graduates. Around Hofstra you may run into her while she’s wearing her sorority’s letters (Delta Gamma), promoting the Hofstra chapter of the nonprofit group She’s the First, giving tours as a Pride Guide, working on the Student Government Association’s programming committee, or hosting Jazz Cafe every other week on WRHU-FM, Radio Hofstra University. Most likely you’ll just see her running around campus as she tries to make it to all of these places on time. Liz loves her hometown ice cream, Seneca Farms, watching The Holiday, and chatting with friends on the Unispan. Go Pride!

Bridget MagembeBridget Magembe was raised in the beautiful country of South Africa for the first eight years of her life. She spent the remaining years living in Boston, Massachusetts. She is now a sophomore at Hofstra and is excited to be a Welcome Week coordinator for the Class of 2016! Currently she is the chief chair of community service for the Hofstra Afrikan Students Association. For as long as she can remember, Bridget has wanted to be a doctor, so she is a health science major here at Hofstra. During her free time Bridget loves to listen to music and write poetry, and she also enjoys singing to herself in the shower (a crowd is way too stressful!). Bridget believes Grey’s Anatomy is the best TV show in the world! While Bridget isn’t singing her life away, watching Grey’s Anatomy or immersed in biology textbooks, she spends time with her family and friends. Bridget also enjoys traveling and plans to see all the wonders the world has to offer someday in the near future. Make Your Move!

Natalia DuttNatalia Dutt is a small town girl from Doylestown, Ohio. After living 18 years in Amish country, she decided that it was time to go after her big city dreams and move to New York. Starting her sophomore year here at Hofstra this fall, Natalia is pursuing her goal of becoming a fashion journalist. She is so excited to be working on planning Welcome Week. On campus, you will most likely find Natalia practicing on the rugby field, attending the Ed2010 meetings, or awkwardly serenading all of her friends on the quad. Otherwise, Natalia can be found sitting under a tree diving into the magical worlds of Harry Potter and Peter Pan.

Welcome Week Virtual FolderIn the past, on the first day of Welcome Week, new students received a folder of information and brochures about numerous offices and on-campus resources; this Welcome Week Folder was invaluable when it came to finding out about all that Hofstra University has to offer. However, amid the goodbyes, check-in, and move-in, it was easy for these papers to get lost in

the shuffle. With the Virtual Welcome Week Folder, you will be able to peruse the cocurricular, academic, career, and social offerings at your leisure, on your computer.

Additionally, the Virtual Folder is part of Hofstra’s “Blue and Gold Make Green” environmental initiatives, as it reduces the amount of paper products distributed during Welcome Week. Instead of providing approximately 1,500 new students with close to 30 pages of materials, all this information is available on the Hofstra website.

Each year, Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC) invites a senior scholar to speak with incoming HUHC students about his/her own vision of the aims of education. This personalized and singular vision builds upon and draws from the speaker’s discipline or field of study. After the presentation, HUHC representatives and other faculty lead small groups of students in reflective conversations about the lecture and their own views on the aims of education. An informal buffet dinner precedes the presentation. Please note: Attendance at this event is required of all entering HUHC students.
