11 -- MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! November is the month of Gratitude and the beginning of our busiest season. No doubt plans are underway to decorate your sanctuaries, plan the church-wide Thanksgiving feast, or participate in community outreach, or “adopt-a-family” programs, collect food or volunteer to serve a local charity. These next 60 days or so tend to bring out the best as well as the worst in people. You as music

directors, ministers and performers will encounter people along the full spectrum of emotions as you go about your work. There will be those who are elated and even giddy with the excitement of the season, to those who feel anxious and depressed, amplified by the absence of loved ones or financial stress. In fact, you may find yourself in that latter category, feeling stressed and overwhelmed with all the extra responsibilities, rehearsals, and busy-ness that distract you from simply enjoying this time. I don’t think it’s any accident that Thanksgiving precedes Christmas. In opening ourselves to greater good, we always begin by giving thanks. Indeed, gratitude is the only ingredient we need to lay the spiritual foundation for addressing life’s challenges.

The Association’s Radio Marketing department has developed a brilliant campaign called “Look For The Good” (www.lookforthegood.org) as a way to counter negative campaigning during this election season. I feel this is also a great slogan to help us foster gratitude in the coming weeks. If you take this month leading up to Thanksgiving to “Look for the Good” you will bring into your field of awareness more and more things to be grateful for. Then, the foundation will be laid for you to deal with any challenges, personal or professional, that may come up during this busy time. You’ll begin to see “the good” in challenges and in challenging people, and be able to give thanks for them. This will in turn open the door for blessings to pour forth and transform what would normally be stressful situations into “Bless-full” situations.

SSoouunndd CCoonnnneeccttiioonn TTeessttiimmoonniiaall Richard, Please accept my delayed GRATITUDE for your wonderful, wonderful SC conference. It was beyond fabulous! Each of our keynote speakers was deeply inspiring to me and I could have spent the entire time with any one of them! Not to mention the extras.... like JD and Jan, Robert Lori, and others. Sloan Wainwright was SOOOOO good. After a few days I pulled out her handout and have begun to practice with her detailed and loving sheets - and WOW! Her advice enables me to deeply relax as I begin singing - and suddenly my voice sounds like I know I can sound at my best. David Ault, David Roth, Jana (Stanfield), and Karen (Drucker) are absolutely superb. And Christine (Stevens) - how could I forget HER!? As to this entire ITOI movement.... I was profoundly moved to hear about your visioning process several years ago with Michael Beckwith, the session in which you envisioned ITOI and some of this process. I would love to hear the entire story. I also have envisioned and manifested some of my dreams - hearing your story, even just the outline, is inspiring to me. Since moving to Lee's Summit two years ago and connecting with Unity Village and all of Unity, I feel like the ugly duckling who finally found her family. I SO did not fit musically into my North Central Kansas rural community; although it was home, I never felt connected to the people there (the geography I still miss!). Fifteen years ago I was having conversations with my growing children about the power of music to affect us, and why there not songs about things that really mattered? Healthy things, wonderful things!? I discussed this with them many times and thought about it even more. I began to write songs that moved me in this direction. And then, here, I found I was not the only one. Thank you for creating a framework for these wonderful people and ideas with YOUR vision! And thank you for inspiring me and so many others to create and to be part of this larger vision.

Co-Creating a Musical Holiday Program By Sue Kroupa Riley As a long time New Thought Church music director, I tend to view the approaching holiday season with a mixture of delight and dread. Delight in the wonderful traditions that the holiday will bring, and dread at the thought of finding just the right music to compliment those traditions. At Unity Church of Clearwater, Fl, I work together with my minister, Reverend Leddy Hammock, to create an hour and a half Christmas program, kind of like a New Thought cantata.

First, I pull up choral music on the JW Pepper site (http://www.jwpepper.com/catalog/welcome.jsp). I try and do this in the summer, so that I have time to get the choral pieces in to study them. This is the most time consuming portion as I listen to clips of about 70 songs to find just the right ones. I also incorporate music from the holiday CDs of one of our New Thought artists. Last year, we wrote the entire program around Peter Mayer's fabulous CD "Midwinter". This year, our program will be entitled "The Miracle and Peace of Christmas" and it will feature some of the fabulous music of Sloan Wainwright from her "Night before Christmas" CD. Leddy and I create this as a team. I choose the music, based on a theme or on the key song. Rather than just constantly re-creating the Christmas story, we look for songs which focus on relevant social issues within the context of the holiday music. I aim for Christmas music that both reflects the message of our "cantata" that year, and also provides some lively music which will feature the choir backed by our house band.

I send Reverend Leddy the song lyrics and she will then write text to connect each portion of the music. This creates about 12 narratives using Unity teachings and various quotes from New Thought authors. The presentation also includes some congregational sing-a-longs, and media slides. We perform this on a Friday evening for a love offering basis, and it seems to be a gift our church community cherishes. I know that the music ministry loves to be a part of it.

Page 6: Welcome toav.unityonline.org/en/association/ministries... · David Ault, David Roth, Jana (Stanfield), and Karen (Drucker) are absolutely superb. ... Since moving to Lee's Summit

This year will be our 4th musical presentation. We offer one of these in my song pairings book "Let's Plan the Service" ([email protected] $20 plus shipping.), and it comes with all the narratives, along with information on ordering the choral pieces. Leddy and I consider ourselves a team, and we are constantly striving to create meaningful services that will heighten the worship experience for those attending. I hope your holidays are musical and magical!

55 –– FFRROOMM TTHHEE RROOAADD Bring this awesome artist to your church!

Hey everybody! Many of you know that about two years ago I got a big nudge to find clear vision on how to use my music and ministry to help grow music in the church, of the church and for the church. What that vision became is the "One Voice Workshop". I've been all over the country with this program, and have now gone on to produce the first "Songs of the One Voice" CD , Songbook, and Choral Score Series. I wrote and recorded each of these 16 songs with the workshops attendees, and left each church with a CD of their performances. Check out the CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/bogert7, and the scores at www.fredbogert.com . Here's a description of the weekend event and some testimonials.

CONCERT The One Voice weekend begins with Fred Bogert in Concert on Friday evening to generate excitement and interest in the workshop. It's a great concert, too! WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION The weekend continues with Fred’s “One Voice” Workshop, on Saturday beginning at 9 and ending at 4, with a break for lunch. (Of course the times are adjustable to work best with each group.) During the morning session, “Awakening Awareness”, Fred leads us to an awareness of our sense of self as a unique aspect of the One Voice. Through music, education and meditation, each participant gains an understanding of how and why music touches us as it does. Fred gives each one a sense of empowerment as he shows how much music is already inside all of us. Participants begin to create and express with the "One Voice". Part of this morning session is referred to as “beachcombing.” WORKSHOP AFTERNOON In the afternoon session, “Exploring Expression”, everyone joins together with the intent of focusing the power of the One Voice and maintaining spiritual awareness as we express. The group begins to look at the “Pearls” that were found while “beachcombing”. With Fred's help these pearls are organized into a focused song idea. A wonderful brainstorming session is part of the afternoon where ideas are freely given without judgment or criticism. We then develop a song from the lyric ideas we’ve written, and perform and record it. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to the unfolding of the composition, whether or not they have any musical experience. Fred will complete the creative process by producing a recording of workshop participants performing the song. The recording will then be donated to the church or group. SUNDAY SERVICE The experience concludes with a live performance by the workshop participants, lead by Fred Bogert, during the Sunday Service. Fred does the special music and often does the talk also.

TTHHEE 1122 TTHHOOUUGGHHTTSS OOFF CCHHRRIISSTTMMAASS:: Traditional Tunes sung with Transformational Thoughts We’ve all done it at one time or another; adapted lyrics to popular and traditional songs to use in our Unity or New Thought services. Fortunately, we now have a large and growing body of New Thought music that fills that need – most of the year.

When it comes to the holidays, it’s just not Christmas without the old standards like “Angels We Have Heard On High”, “The First Noel” and “Deck The Halls”. We all know the melodies and we usually take in stride the words that don’t exactly jive with our teachings. We draw the spirit of the songs from their timeless tunes. Enter Laurie Story Vela who with the help of her friend David Tralle have produced a CD to fill a need. Though the CD is meant to be a resource for adult choirs and congregations, I feel the project’s best niche is in the Youth and family Education departments.

Page 8: Welcome toav.unityonline.org/en/association/ministries... · David Ault, David Roth, Jana (Stanfield), and Karen (Drucker) are absolutely superb. ... Since moving to Lee's Summit

The CD was recorded with children’s voices singing lead on some songs, the choruses on others and echoing responses on others like, “I Heard Three Angels” ( I Saw Three Ships). Hearing children singing New Thought lyrics to Christmas carols was quite inspiring and touching at times. Each of the 12 songs appears twice on the CD, once with vocals by Laurie accompanied by children and adults in a real sing-a-long spirit. Then the twelve tracks are repeated without vocals making it easy for those of you with Children’s Choirs preparing for that Christmas recital. You can rehearse the children with the vocal tracks, then use the instrumental tracks for performance. The children will already know the melodies - Voila! Instant children’s Christmas concert! Looking over the song list will give you an idea of the direction this CD is going: 1. God Bless Ye Merry Families (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) 2. I Heard 3 Angels (I Saw 3 Ships) 3. Santa Lives (Up On The Housetop) 4. What Child Is This? 5. Away In A Manger 6. Go Tell It On The Mountain (Variation) 7. On This Noel (The First Noel) 8. Voice Of Christmas (Deck The Halls) 9. Joyous Glory Angels Sing (Angels, We Have Heard On High) 10. Here We Come A-Caroling 11. One Drum (Variation Pat-A-Pan) 12. The 12 Thoughts Of Christmas (The 12 Days Of Christmas) Some lyric examples: From “What Child Is This?” “This, this is consciousness; Christ light awakening, shining bliss. This, this is consciousness. I wake up and shine who I am.” From “On This Noel” - “On this noel, the angels did say, “Peace on the planet starts with kind words we say.” From “The 12 Thoughts of Christmas” – “On the first day of Christmas my True Love gave to me, infinite possibilities.” (notice the capitalized “True Love” ) Laurie said she used the Readers Digest Christmas Book to determine keys and arrangements so they are familiar and easy to sing with. Laurie and David also offer lyric booklets to go along with the CD. These can be purchased or downloaded and they have discounted rates the more you buy. Lyric books can also be used for New Thought caroling or to have in the pews for your Christmas congregational songs. Contact Laurie at 800.ABC.4974. Email [email protected]. Thank you, Richard. Thank you for your beautiful contribution to music, and thank you for the incredible space you've created for us to share! I love this community and I look forward to my newsletter every month. Next year I will not miss the Music Conference! My friend Jeanne & I are music ministers at Unity Church of Mesa, Arizona. This spiritual community has created an incredible listening for our group, The JaJa's (pronounced YaYa's). Each week through their intention and God's sweet grace, we are given one or two new songs to fit the lessons of the week. We have been blessed with the completion of our first new-thought CD, and we published our music for sale online for the first time last week. Our actual CD will be finished and available on October 19. We are fairly new to the new thought world of music. I’m sure you get these requests all the time, but I would love some feedback on our sound clips and website, and would welcome any advice from you and our online community on what we should do next to share our music. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! Again, thank you for who you are, and for the difference you've made in our world. Blessings, Barb Horton www.thejajas.com

Hello Richard and All - When we got home from Sound Connections and started sharing some of what we had experienced with our minister, she mentioned that she is on a mission to get the Music Department's salaries up to par: they are the same today as they were in the 80's. She said that, in order to move the Board, we would need to be able to show what other similarly sized churches were paying their director, musicians and soloists. Would there be any way of finding out that sort of information (general info - not necessarily the salaries of specific people) through you? Thank you for everything at Sound Connections! Beth Gill Unity of Toledo [email protected] We did not get a lot of response from the field on this one ( I guess everyone’s happy with their compensation.) but I found this piece from a local RSI music director to add a little levity to the topic. RM Help Wanted: Music Director; Ideal candidate is a college graduate with twelve degrees in music and particular experience in pop, jazz, reggae, classical, gospel, salsa, funk, church, hip-hop, blues, disco, rap, and the polka; is an experienced arranger, choreographer, producer, conductor, composer, teacher, writer, and event planner; reads charts, open scores, tenor clef, medical prescriptions, and Latin; completed substantial course work in counseling, communications, marketing, psychology, dance, theater, public relations, law, accounting, diplomacy, carpentry, theology, ancient history, and current events; has a keen eye for décor, an uncanny psychic gift, types over two hundred words per minute, and logs at least one million hours in telephone usage during any three-week period; must have reliable transportation. "The task of the Music Director is to provide a spiritual experience. In short, the task of the Music Director is to provide an experience that somehow touches people, that somehow moves people, and whether they respond with breathless silence, with thunderous applause, or with hysterical laughter, they are touched, they are moved, they are having that spiritual experience." This song was written by Fred Bogert and the One Voice Workshop participants one beautiful fall afternoon at the "Tools for Transformation" regional retreat in the Pokagon State Park near Angola, Indiana. We all felt the energy together that became lyric and melody. Gloria Bogert took the picture of fall leaves in the garden outside. Divine! October 20, 2006
