Spelling
English spelling is conducted every week.
It is important that your child learns his/her spelling and dictation regularly.
There is a strong connection between spelling and reading and
between spelling and writing.
Reading
Research findings in applied linguistics and reading research
consistently show a strong correlation between reading
proficiency and academic success at all ages, from the primary
school right through to university level: students who read a
lot and who understand what they read usually attain good
grades.
Pretorius, E.

• Mathematics is learned by DOING problems. • Each topic / concept builds on the previous ones.• Ground the basics first and then move on to challenging
problems.• Ensure your child write the equations and show their
working. • Ensure your child master the basic skills, for example,
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. • Develop Problem Solving strategies eg :
• Model Drawing• Guess and Check
How can you support your child?
• Practise everyday – have a daily routine• Your child must set aside at least 45 minutes to do
Mathematics daily.
• Ensure homework is completed and submitted punctually.
• If your child needs your help, lead him/her to understand the questions and guide him/her to solve the problems himself/herself. Do not do the questions for your child.
• Review the topics taught - have adequate and varied exposure.
How can you support your child?
• Have targeted practice based on your knowledge of your child’s areas for improvement complementing their school work.
• Ensure a good balance as too much/too often is likely to burn out even the most enthusiastic learner.
• Focus on effort and affirm every success.
• Inculcate good habits:
• Strive for accuracy
• Persisting
• Relate Mathematics to everyday life situations.
How can you support your child?
How can you support your child?
Use Mathematics with your child in daily life
In the supermarket, compare the prices of different packs of fruit to decide which pack offers the best value.
Give children the opportunity to handle money and receive change.
Give the child some pocket money and encourage him/her to budget how the money will be spent.
How can you support your child?
Encourage your child to give explanations
Have your child share his or her thinking aloud and talk about the strategies used to solve problems.
As children talk about their ideas and how they reach the solutions, they are learning to reason mathematically.
Prompt your child to think of other ways to solve problems.

ASSESSMENT
MATTERS
Assessment
Purpose:
(i) to measure students’ attainment and; report evidence of learning in different learning areas and;
(ii) to support students’ learning and classroom teaching.
Holistic Assessment at P3
• Bite-size forms of assessment such as topical tests,
short writing, reading and performance tasks to
provide your child with more opportunities to
experience success and build his/her confidence and
desire to learn.
Holistic Assessment at P3
• Teachers will also use a range of assessment strategies
such as questioning, giving of feedback, and peer- and
self-assessment to support your child’s learning.
• More details will be released nearer to the assessment
dates.
Attendance During Exams
• Attendance during exams is compulsory.
Exceptions:
• Provide an MC in order to get a Valid Reason (VR) for the exam. If a pupil is absent without an MC, the pupil will receive a zero mark.
• Passing away of relative, please provide the death certificate.
• Special cases/ emergencies, please inform Form Teacher at the earliest possible time.
P3 Gifted Education
Programme (GEP)
Primary 3
GEP Screening Exercise
19 August 2020 (Wednesday) during school hours
Tested in EL & Maths
All topics in P3 Mathematics syllabus
(except for the topics of Area & Perimeter, Geometry and Time)
Primary 3
Selection Exercise
20 & 21 October 2020 (Tuesday & Wednesday)
Only for shortlisted pupils
Tested in EL, Maths & General Ability
All topics in the P3 Mathematics syllabus
(except for Angles and Perpendicular and Parallel Lines in Geometry)
Please note:
The GEP Identification Exercise aims to identify suitable pupils with high
intellectual potential.
Test-preparation activities could inflate pupils’ scores and not reflect their
actual potential.
Pupils who are not ready to handle the intellectual rigor & demands of the
programme will struggle with the enriched curriculum.
This would put undue stress on the pupils, and may even cause them to
lose confidence & impact their self-esteem.
There is no need to prepare your child for this Screening Exercise.
