This year the Acorn is to hold the Open Age presentations at a formal occasion to be held at the Park Inn, North Street, York. This will be the first time an event like this has been held away from the club and is intended to add a touch of ‘professionalism’ to our club. Our guest speaker will be former Great Britain and England international scrum-half, and current French national team head Coach, Bobby Goulding.

In Addition we will be suitable enter-tained by one of Britain brightest Comics; Lester Crabtree. Lester Crabtree is an outstanding young North West Based comedian with his own unique , cheeky, yet at-tacking style. Lester Crabtree has undoubtedly emerged as one of the most sought after comedians on the UK comedy & after dinner circuit today. Lester Crabtree has had numerous TV and Radio Appearances including Ant and Decs Saturday Night Take Away.

End of Season Awards Dinner

Tickets are still available for what will be a most memorable event. For more information see; Scott, Tich, Stav, Terry or Alan

Stanningley are today’s visitors to Thanet Road and we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters, who must be upbeat following their performance against Hunslet last week when they came close to a result against the league leaders and will be looking to get a result today to stave off the relegation shadow. Acorn supporters contrastingly returned from Bradford Dudley Hill disappointed, not so much with losing but because enough opportunities were created to have gained what would have been an huge step towards promotion. Hopefully today the Acorn will rediscover their edge and pull out a performance worthy of our current status and provide some confidence for the remaining fixtures. Nothing less will be enough against what are always difficult and resilient opponents. Let us hope for an entertaining open game and please ensure that you give the match referee and his two assistants, as well as the players, your total support. Strangely, for our second team, they travel to our opponents’ home ground to take on Normanton Knights in the play off final of the Yorkshire Men’s League. Whilst the league failed to fulfil all expecta-tions this summer season, we extend our congratu-lations to the team having safely dispatched Hunslet in the semi final. We sincerely hope that they can return with the silverware. Enjoy the Game - Mick Lumby

27th September 2012, 16:22 As the season draw to a close the race for the promotion places couldn't be closer. With 6 teams having a realist chance to go up here’s a quick review of what’s happening this weekend. HUNSLET WARRIORS make the short trip across West Yorkshire for their crunch clash with second-placed BRADFORDM DUDLEY HILL tomorrow (Friday) night. Only points difference currently separates the second-tier pair, who each still boast genuine title hopes on top of automatic promotion hopes. Dudley Hill have been unable to achieve back-to-back wins since July and were forced to settle for a point in last weekend’s 20-20 draw with Milford. As for the Warriors, whose head coach Paul Jackson has this week agreed terms with Whitehaven for next year, they go in search of claiming their second-straight Division One win. Elsewhere, on Saturday, league-leaders CASTLEFORD LOCK LANE play host to the already relegated OLDHAM ST ANNES. Unless a draw occurs between Hunslet and Bradford, a win will only maintain their advantage of one point at the summit. Promotion hopefuls YORK ACORN face a must-win test at home to STANNINGLEY, who could secure their future in the National Conference League’s second tier this weekend. Defeat for Acorn, who have two games in hand on those directly above them on the league ladder, would dent hopes of a return to the top flight. Meanwhile, ECCLES play host to STANLEY RANGERS, who caused a huge shock – last time out – as they edged Egremont Rangers, who are out of action this weekend as they appear, on Sunday, in the Conference Challenge Trophy final. The Rangers simply cannot afford defeat at relegation looms large. WIGAN ST JUDES are preparing for an intense battle with fourth-placed MILFORD MARLINS, who too re-main hopeful of clinching promotion. Judes, who are clinging on to a mathematical equation, which would still see them gain promotion, face a Milford side which are unbeaten in six league outings, having only lost twice since the start of July.

Conference 1 weekend preview

With the Millom game surprisingly postponed last Saturday we find ourselves back at home again this week against our friends from Stanningley we had a convincing victory earlier in the season at the Arthur Miller Stadium but I expect a much tougher game today as they have made vast improvements as the season has progressed gaining some good results and pushing the top clubs close. Our last home game against Dudley Hill definitely saw the worst performance of the season where particularly in the second half we failed to compete in a game that would have certainly placed us in a strong position for promotion had we gained the points. Today we need to put that behind us and certainly win 4 of our remaining 5 matches to snatch one of the top 3 positions, Just turning up on the day doesn't get you the points in this division and today is the first of 5 cup finals for us to reclaim our premier division status. I would just like to wish our second team good luck this afternoon in their play off final against Normanton this afternoon over at Stanningley.- Best of luck lads Come on the ‘Corn’, Scott

Acorn Junior signs for Rhinos

Congratulations from the club to Ash Robson who has recently signed with the Leeds Rhinos. Ash Robson is an elusive full back who returns the ball well every time. This season he was selected for the England Youth Academy to play France. He comes from York and played at York Acorn. He made a great start to the 2012 season with a try against Huddersfield.

What the papers say...

Thursday 27th September 2012 in Rugby League York Acorn ARLC coach Scott Rhodes expects there to be a few twists as divi-sion one of the National Conference League enters its final few weeks – but he remains hopeful of a return to amateur rugby league’s top tier. Acorn were relegated from the premier division last season, but currently sit sixth in division one with at least two games in hand over most of their rivals going into their home game with Stanningley on Saturday. “There’s still loads to play for. We go into every game looking for a win, and that’s what we’ll do again this weekend,” said Rhodes, who stated ahead of the postponed game with Millom last weekend that his side needed to win at least four of their five remaining games to stand a chance of promotion. “The situation is still the same,” added the Acorn coach, who fancies his team’s chances of getting the win against Stanningley. “Looking over their recent results they’ve not been winning in the league. “They nearly got a result against Hunslet Warriors last weekend, though, and this will be another tough game. They’ll be looking to try and get some pride out of the season.” Stanningley sit just one place above the relegation zone, and, with Stanley Rangers just three points back, they have it all to play for against Acorn this Saturday. The same can be said of Milford Marlins, Acorn’s opponents the following weekend, who are currently fourth and also involved in what looks to be a six-team battle for the three promotion places. “They look to be a form team at the minute – that’ll be a tough one and we’ll have to be on top of our game to beat them,” said Rhodes. Acorn head into the game against Stanningley with concerns over their pack. Prop Adam Endersby remains sidelined with a broken thumb, while both Alan Willetts and Danny Caldwell join the unavailable list this weekend. Rhodes believes his side will cope with the losses, however. “We’ll go with what we’ve got, like we have done all season,” he said.

The Blue and Gold’s in Action

Last Time Out: Saturday 15th Sept –Bradford Dudley Hill 28 York Acorn 6

Acorn slump to disappointing defeat It was a case of after the lord mayors show for Acorn as they failed to capitalise on last week's performance as they crashed at home to fellow promotion rivals Dudley Hill by 6 points to 28. In a tight first half with defences on top chances were at a premium and it wasn't until the 25th minute when Michael Embleton carved open the visitors defence to send Joe Budd under the posts from 30 yards. Anthony Chilton kicked an easy conversion. After some mounting Dudley Hill pressure centre Lewis Evans scored on the overlap on 32 minutes. The visitors were awarded a penalty on 39 minutes after a high tackle and hooker Nathan Kitson goaled to level the match up at half time. Acorn started the second half well and full back Joel Johnson was tackled short with the line at his mercy it turned out to be the blue and golds only decent at-tack of the half as the visitors superior kicking game and sharp passing had Acorn struggling. Winger Neil Wall scored wide out on 47 minutes and Kitson scored a smart try on 50 minutes as Acorn saw the game slipping away, Wall grabbed his second on 58 minutes from another kick, Kitson goaled from wide out. Kitson added a penalty on 62 minutes and 3 minutes later Kyle Bateman crashed over from close range and Kitson goaled to round off the scoring. Michael Embleton took the man of the match award in an extremely lacklustre performance as the pressure mounts on the Acorn promotion push with 5 games remaining.
