Key Stage 1 - Year 1 July 2020
Learning in Year 1It is important that the children joining Year 1 continue to be
passionate and enthusiastic about learning. This will enable them
to succeed in lessons and become independent learners. In Year 1
we plan focused lessons in each subject area and differentiate
tasks according to their ability. To aid with transition we also
incorporate aspects of the continuous curriculum into our
timetable.
Our teaching enables the children to take their next steps in
learning through carefully planned independent and small
group work, adult led and whole class teaching.
Our goal is to create a happy and safe environment where our
children are self motivated, enthusiastic learners who thrive when
faced with a challenge.

Welcome
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Year 1.
Now your child has moved into Year 1 they will be working from the National Curriculum which was last updated in September 2014
It's exciting....
Moving on from Foundation 2 to Year 1 is an exciting change. We want you to be fully involved with this transition for your child.
Just ask .......
The information in this booklet is how Year 1 would ‘normally’ be. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic things may be a little different but we will follow the guidelines set out by the government or local authority.
We hope this booklet gives you the information that you need to ensure both you and your child are comfortable during the transition period.
If there is any more information that you would like please don't hesitate to ask.
WELCOME TO YEAR 1
Key Stage 1 - Year 1 July 2020
Learning through playThe Year 1 classrooms have different areas in which the
children can learn through play. These are linked to
the themes we are learning about in class. For example
the role play area would be a home corner at the
beginning of the year, when we are learning about
'Around Our School'. They also have access to
construction and small world toys, as well as the
creative and reading areas.
At the beginning of the academic year, the children
will complete short independent activities and then
have the opportunity to access the different provision
areas. As we progress throughout the year, the children
will be expected to complete longer and more focused
activities, therefore the amount of play and access to
the continuous curriculum will decrease. However,
throughout the year the children will have the
opportunity to play.

Phonics - Letters and Sounds
Phonics is an important part of the children's literacy development. We follow a six phase phonics programme that starts in Foundation Stage and continues throughout Year 1 and 2.
In Year 1 the children have a phonics screening test, set out by the government, which is completed in the summer term. The test consists of 40 words, which are a mixture of real and pseudo (nonsense) words. It is designed to test the children's phonics knowledge.
To help the children develop a sound phonic knowledge, we teach phonics on a daily basis. At the beginning of the academic year we recap phase two and three with the children. Then move onto phase four and five. Within these sessions the children are asked to read and spell real and pseudo words. This is then transferred into group guided reading activities. Phonics practise may also be sent home for consolidation which will consist of real and pseudo words. Your child is not required to spell or learn the pseudo words off by heart but should practise to read them confidently and be able to identify them.
Reading BooksThe children will get two reading books a week; this may be a combination of one Oxford Reading Tree book and one Rigby Star / Rigby Rocket book or two Oxford Reading Tree books. Sometimes the children may have previously read these books in school in their guided reading sessions. This may be because of teacher assessment or due to the children needing to consolidate their word recognition and fluency.
In Year 1 the children read to an adult as part of a group at least twice a week through guided reading sessions.
Homework Your child will receive work to complete at home that consolidates aspects of learning covered at school. All children will have a homework bag, which needs to be returned to school by Thursday morning, once homework has been completed. It will then be given back out to the children on a Friday. In their homework bag they will bring home two reading books and spellings each week and sometimes they may bring a literacy, numeracy, science or topic related task.

Key Stage 1 - Year 1 July 2020
Spellings The children will receive some spellings to learn each week, usually in their homework bag. These will be based on the phonics teaching that is taking place in school or the common exception words they need to learn.
To learn these spellings, it is important that the children use the Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check method. Firstly, they need to look at the spelling, noting any unusual letters. Then they say the word out loud. Next the word is covered up and the child writes the word down at least three times on a piece of paper. Finally the written down spelling is checked against the original word.
The spellings will be tested each week. When they are tested in class, they will be given in a different order to the list sent home to learn and the children will be required to write them on a piece of paper.
The most successful way to do this is to do a few minutes each night; children will receive rewards in school for full marks in their spelling tests.
Involving you in your child's learning........

Parents' EveningsWe have Parents' Evenings at two points throughout the year. Parents' Evenings give you the chance to talk to your child's teacher about their progress and to view their work. Due to limited time and the number of parents, 10 minute slots are allocated. Therefore, time keeping is essential. But if you do have something important to discuss, which will take longer than 10 minutes, you are welcome to make a further appointment.
Barnaby Bear and Betty BearThe children will have the opportunity to bring home Barnaby and Betty Bear during their time in Year 1. Barnaby Bear loves to go on adventures and he helps the children to develop their confidence, when speaking in front of an audience for a given purpose. They will present their adventures with Barnaby to the class. They can take photographs to show and can write some sentences to help them remember what they did. For this reason Barnaby Bear will be sent home on a Friday and must be returned to school on Monday morning. However, Betty Betty needs her beauty sleep and must go to bed at sunset. This is to support our science topic 'Seasons' where the children have to understand how the amount of day light hours changes. They will be asked to record what time she goes to bed on a Saturday night in her diary.

Behaviour at Hopton Primary School
Transition information 11
The Golden PrinciplesAs a school we adopt the three golden principles. They are;
✦Honesty - To always tell the truth.
✦Effort - To try your best in everything you do. To be a good role model.
✦Respect - To use kind words, kind deeds, kind hands and kind feet. Look after our
property. To listen carefully.
Sanctions
The following sanctions system is used throughout key stage 1.
• Remind the children what the expectations are around the observed behaviour.
• Give 2 official warnings before a sanction is applied for most behaviours with the
exception of physical violence.
• If they continue to break the rules than another sanction is given.
• 3 sanctions equate to the loss of a privilege such as playing outside. However, children
will need the opportunity to run around, so they will only miss 5 minutes at a time.
This will also be recorded as a negative point on ‘Class Charts’.
• A sanction should be served immediately or the next day, it should not be held over
until the end of the week.
• Parents / carers may be informed if a child receives a sanction that day.
• Sanctions should be repeated as required, however, if sanctions are deemed as not
working advice should be sought before next steps are taken. Next steps are likely to be
the involvement of parents/carers.
