We can’t grow in isolation. We need each other
in order to grow. We are designed, each of us,
with a different something or other (talents,
temperaments, traits, trials, and triumphs!) that
is vital to carry out God’s mission in the world.
More recently I have come to a special
appreciation of the mix that contributes to our
vitality here at Wesley.
For an example, I thank God for Wesley’s
step-up of about $7,000 in general offerings
from the previous year. In December we were
concerned about keeping up with our year-end
obligations and expenses. Yet, because of your
faith-driven generosity, we could give $2,000
out of the abundance of the Christmas Offering
to go in support of the ministry at Lake Okoboji
United Methodist Camp. We thank God that
young lives in NW Iowa and Siouxland will
grow in faith and God’s love. We are stronger
together in the bond of Christ!
Another example. Recently, I was honored to
have connected with a man of faith, by the name
of Chris Domingue at a local Version store. I was
anxious in thought about many things on my
to-do list that day and getting a new phone was
an unwanted necessity I had to address. Then I
looked up at Chris’s friend, Charles, who was
wearing a shirt with the words “Be thankful for
what?” written with a scripture reference on it.
It was 1 Thessalonians 5:18; a reminder that peo-
ple of faith are to be thankful for all circumstanc-
es “for this is God’s will” for us! Yes, God uses
our current circumstances as we walk in faith
trusting that in the end God will make it all work
for His good purposes!
I told Chris I really needed to hear that message
that day. Since then Chris has revealed how we
vitally NEED to connect together as the Body of
Christ. We are to inspire and motivate one
another to grow in faith and love together in the
Lord. And in the past number of months since,
we have maintained fellowship with him and he
has introduced me to others who are under his
employ. They all have transferred here from Fort
Madison, Iowa to pursue greater opportunity in a
thriving medical and special needs transportation
service here in Sioux City called “D & Z Trans-
portation”. Chris says it’s so much more than a
business, it is a ministry that changes and
strengthens lives in the Lord!
Long story short. Out of the bond of fellowship
with Chris and a few more friends I invited all
interested souls to join us in our Family Life
Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays,
5:30 to 7:00 pm. for light food and refreshments,
prayer, and Bible Study. Chris leads the group
and, so far the past few weeks, we have about
12-16 meeting regularly. This is another small
group opportunity, along with our other home
“Growth Groups” that have been meeting
together this past year. Again, if interested and
compelled to want to grow in the Lord YOU are
invited to be a part of another vital ministry
opportunity.
We are stronger together in the bond of Christ!
Be blessed to be a blessing! Love to all!
Todd

You know it as the shortest month of the year—or, depending on where you live, the coldest. But, do you know where the name February came from? Well, first, some calendar-related history. The original Roman calendar only had ten months, because, curiously, the Romans didn’t demarcate winter. (Sometimes, we wish we could do the same.) In the 700s BC, the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, changed that, adding January and February to the end of the calendar in order to conform to how long it actually takes the Earth to go around the Sun. The two new months were both originally 28 days long. It is lost to history why January acquired more days, though there are various unverifiable hypotheses. At that time, March 1 became New Year’s Day, but later, in 153 BC, the beginning of the year was moved to January 1.
Before we adopted the Latin name for our second month, Old English used much more vibrant names to describe the month now known as February. The most common Old English name was Solmonath, which literally means “mud month.” A lesser-used term was Kale-monath, which meant “cabbage month.” Perhaps, the medieval English were eating a lot of cabbage in February? Strange.
Since other months, like January, are named after Roman gods, you’d be forgiven for thinking February was named after the Roman god Februus.
But, the word February comes from the Roman festival of purification called Februa, during which people were ritually washed. In this case, the god was named after the festival, not the other way around. Must have been a pretty good festival. Dictionary.com

WAS YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO
LOSE WEIGHT IN 2020?
There are two weight loss groups that
meet at Wesley UMC during the week.
Overeaters Anonymous meets on Tues-
days at 1:00 pm..
TOPS meets on Thursdays at 4:45 pm.
We’re
so accustomed to hearing the Bible’s “love
chapter,” 1 Corinthians 13, at weddings
and other occasions that we may not really
hear its meaning anymore. It can help to
listen to something familiar said in different
words. What new understandings of love
does this paraphrase from The Mes-
sage Bible reveal to you?
“Love never gives up. Love cares more for
others than for self. Love doesn’t want
what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut,
doesn’t have a swelled head, doesn’t force
itself on others, isn’t always ‘me first,’
doesn’t fly off the handle, doesn’t keep
score of the sins of others, doesn’t revel
when others grovel, takes pleasure in the
flowering of truth, puts up with anything,
trusts God always, always looks for the
best, never looks back, but keeps going to
the end. Love never dies” (1 Corinthians
13:4-8a, MSG).

Rocks and Repentance Before recently closing to tourists,
Australia’s majestic Uluru (formerly
called Ayers Rock) was popular with
climbers. Many took home illegal
souvenirs, sometimes later mailing
them back to park rangers after experi-
encing what they considered bad luck.
So many pilfered mementos were
returned, often with notes of apology,
that rangers called them “sorry rocks.”
The returns merely created more work
for park staff, who urged visitors not to
take specimens in the first place.
“Sorry rocks” is a fitting image for our
sins, which the Bible describes as
weights and entanglements (see
Hebrews 12:1). As sinners, we can’t
remove those heavy burdens on our
own. But through Christ’s redeeming
work on our behalf, we can “return” the
rocks of wrongdoing. When we repent
and seek forgiveness, God promises to
“remember [our] sins no
more” (Hebrews 8:12).
