VLADO has been going to school for a total of 18 years, including primary school which he finished in 1996.After graduating high school in 1999 VLADO attended a 6 months course in advanced chemistry and then started study-ing engineering at university. He graduated in 2004 and while searching for a job, VLADO also studied German on the side. Currently VLADO is a mechanical engineer, working with research and development, intellectual property issues and as an instructor. About his goal for the future, VLADO says:

“At the moment, I am pretty much where I want to be with my career. I am a respected specialist at my company and my job is interesting and challenging”. His former jobs include be-ing a shop assistant and a warehouse employee. VLADO has also attended first aid courses and is currently a member of the first aid team at his company. His native language is Rus-sian and he also speaks Danish, English and some German. He has not served in the military.

Which words describe your personality? Honest, open-minded, straightforward, thoughtful, responsi-ble, laid-back, a realist.

Describe your strong sides: I am a straightforward, uncomplicated guy who usually gets along well with everyone. I always keep my word.My laid-back attitude helps me to avoid stress. However, when something must be done, I will commit to it and do whatever it takes. I normally think before I act. I stand by my points of view, but I am not stubborn. A good argument can convince me and I enjoy a proper debate.

Describe your weak sides: I may be too cautious with things I never tried before and with people I don’t know. Sometimes I think too much when quick action is needed. I could be better at “reading between the lines”.

What is your marital status?Single.

Do you have any children? No.

Which types of sport do you play or have played? Running, road cycling, volleyball, karate.

Which other types of sports are you interested in? Athletics, soccer, tennis, martial arts.

Religion:I consider myself an agnostic. For those unfamiliar with the term, it means that I neither claim that God exists nor deny His existence. If tangible proof is ever presented for either hypoth-esis, I may revise my view.

Which countries have you visited:Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Italy, San Marino, Greece, Po-land, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine (my native country) and Israel.

Describe the best holiday you have had: When I was in high school, our entire class went to the Greek island of Crete on a “study” trip. We saw many interesting things, but more importantly, we had a lot of fun together and really enjoyed each other’s company.My trip to Israel was memorable too. I am not a spiritual per-son, but when I walked the streets of the Old City in Jerusa-lem, it really was something special. It’s only a pity that the two nations inhabiting this land can’t find a way to coexist in peace.

What do you like the most about your own country:I have lived two thirds of my life in Denmark. So, I naturally consider Denmark my home country. Compared to almost any other country in the world, Denmark is a great place to live. I could mention things like high social security, low crime level, very little corruption, free education and hence, a chance for everyone to become whatever they want. The Danes are, generally, friendly and helpful people, when you get to know them.

Who are your idols/heroes/heroines? Throughout history there have lived many people whose feats of personal courage, ingenuity, foresight or dedication to a just cause have made our world a better place. They all deserve our respect and to be considered role models.If I should pick one, I would choose Galileo Galilei. He is con-sidered the founder of modern science. He was a visionary man far ahead of his time. He also had the personal courage to challenge in public the dogmatic teachings of the church. Eventually, he was forced to recant his theories when the cath-olic inquisition threatened him with torture. But who wouldn’t? Not many are willing to become martyrs, after all. Maybe he also understood that, by that time, his ideas had already done their job by inspiring numerous young researchers. Not long after, it was universally accepted that dogma and mysticism have no place in understanding our world.

What are your goals in life? I want to live a happy life. For me it means having an interest-ing job, friends I can rely on and a loving family. It means trav-elling the world and having some unforgettable experiences. It means trying to do something good for other people.I hope, one day, to meet a girl who is a perfect match for me (and I for her), to fall in love and start a family. I hope we will have some children and will be able to raise them to become good people, whom I can be proud of. When I get old, I hope that I can look back at my life without regret.

What were your childhood dreams:I think I wanted to become an inventor.

Which values do you rank the highest?Honesty, reliability, common sense, helpfulness, tolerance.

Which childhood experience made the biggest impres-sion on you? I was unable to swim until the age of 9. My father tried to teach me several times, but without success. So, I started to think that I would never learn it. I was quite unhappy about it because I actually loved the sea. Then, my parents persuad-ed me to join a swimming class. I went there believing that it would be little more than a waste of time. But then, at least, nobody could blame me for not trying. The first lesson started with the instructor telling me and the other kids standing in the pool to take a deep breath, put the head in the water and then push off from the bottom. Sure it required a little persuasion, but when I finally did it, I realized that I was floating effortlessly and there was NOTHING scary about it. In an instant, all my fear was gone. It was that simple! This experience taught me that many seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be over-come with the right approach.

What is your favourite colour? Green. I think it’s relaxing.

What is your favourite animal? The eagle. It’s a beautiful bird which is powerful and confident

What is your favourite kind of food? Borsch. It’s a Ukrainian beetroot soup. It should be eaten with sour cream and dark rye bread.

What is your favourite kind of music: I mostly listen to pop and rock. Some of my favorites are Cold-play, Depeche mode, UB40 and REM. Bonus info: One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard is Athair ar Neamh by Enya.

What is your favourite kind of car: Aston Martin DB9 is a really cool car. It’s so beautiful, it could be mistaken for a work of art. It’s not very practical, though :-)

What is your favourite time of year: May. It’s warm, but not too hot yet, the days are long, all the plants are freshly green and many are blossoming.

What is your favourite book and/or author: I read a lot of different literature, but I am particularly fond of science fiction. In this genre, I have recently discovered the works of David Brin. They made a very positive impression.

What is your favourite movie and/or director: Some of my favorites are The big Lebowski, The Shawshank redemption, City of God (the Brazilian film), Pulp fiction and The good, the bad and the ugly.

Q&A with VLADO - continuedVLADO’s dreams, favourites and experiences

Which was your greatest experience or moment? When I received my university diploma as the tangible result of 18 years of non-stop studying.

Happiest: Probably when I fell in love for the first time.

Funniest: When I went to school, they held a competition in speed skating. Everybody in my class joined and so did I, even though it was the first time EVER I put a pair of skates on my feet. I don’t know how it happened, but I managed to get to the semi-finals and then, incredibly, the final! In the final there were just two contestants, me and another boy who was the defending champion from last year. He possibly got nerv-ous and when the start signal sounded, he tripped over his own feet right on the start line. This “accident” allowed me to gain so much distance that despite my very ineffective skat-ing style, he never managed to catch up. And so, I became a somewhat surprising champion. It was truly hilarious sitting afterwards with friends and family and watching on video how I tried to outrun my opponent. And I literally mean outrun be-cause my skating looked more like running!

Scariest: Once I got hit by a huge wave and I couldn’t surface for some seconds. It wasn’t really dangerous, but I sure got scared.

Proudest: When I got promoted to senior specialist in record time at my current job becoming the youngest person holding that title in the company’s history.

Most dangerous: When I was around 9, I was just a fraction of a second from being hit by a speeding car. If my reaction that day were just slightly slower, it would have been the end of my story.

Greatest sorrow: Breaking up with my first girlfriend was a hard time.

Now I’d like to mention those I simply can’t stand:Dishonesty, scandal-mongering, backstabbing, recklessness, religious fundamentalism, greed and worst of all, meaningless aggression and violence as a means for solving conflicts
