Using Your Freshman BookletYour Freshman Booklet is your guide to what should be done before arriving on campus for the fall semester. Your first step in becoming a UNT student is attending orientation, but there are many tasks that you need to complete before and after orientation in order to be prepared for Mean Green Move-In Weekend! Our hope is that you use this book as a guide for what to do next. If you have questions along the way, call our office at 940-565-4198 and we’d be happy to help!

WELCOME CLASS OF 2022

Congratulations! On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, welcome to University of North Texas and the class of 2022! We are proud that you have chosen to become a member of our growing UNT family!

In order to assist you with your transition to UNT, all new undergraduate students are required to attend an orientation session. Orientation is designed to help students and families become acclimated to the university. During orientation, you will have the chance to meet with faculty and staff, meet your new classmates, connect with current students, learn about university resources, and receive academic advising in preparation for registering for classes. You will leave orientation understanding our university’s spirit and traditions, as well as what to expect as you embark on your college experience.

We believe every UNT student has the potential to succeed. We also know that the transition to college can often be difficult as you begin to navigate a new environment where you are now responsible for all of your decisions—both positive and negative. Part of our responsibility is to help you shape your college experience in a way that sets you up for success. You are an important member of our university community and we want to make sure you, too, feel like an integral member of it. To help you start on the right foot, all new freshmen will be required to participate in First Flight, UNT’s official welcome week program.

First Flight consists of a series of events all geared toward starting your first semester on the right foot. Ultimately, by the end of First Flight, we want you to feel prepared,

Disability Accommodations Students who intend to register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) under the terms of ADA/504, or who request accommodations during their orientation session, should check the appropriate boxes on their orientation registration materials. In addition, please contact ODA two weeks prior to your orientation date by calling 940.565.4323, TTY callers 1-800-RELAY TX. Visit the ODA website at www.unt.edu/oda.

Although students who graduate from an Early College High School (ECHS) can enter the university with a significant number of transfer credits, UNT requires these graduates to participate in a freshman orientation program. We believe this best sets you up for success at the University of North Texas. Because your needs are slightly different, we encourage you to attend a special meeting prior to the orientation welcome to help better prepare you for your orientation experience. This meeting will take place on the first day of your orientation, before the official welcome. We encourage you to check in to orientation and then attend this meeting. The location of the meeting will be available to you at check-in.

UNT Major Boot CampUNT Major Boot Camp is designed for freshmen students that left orientation unsure of their major selection. At the UNT Major Boot Camp, students will have the opportunity to review personality inventory results with a professional, research major options and potential careers, and work with UNT staff to learn about changing their major.

The program will take place on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from 9:00am until 3:00pm, and is free to all incoming freshman students. Complete program details, including a schedule at a glance and the registration link, can be found on the orientation.unt.edu website by clicking “Major Boot Camp” in the right menu bar.

Math Placement Exam

Foreign Language Placement and Exam for Credit

Music Meeting During Orientation

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

The Department of Mathematics will not place students into courses at or above the level of Calculus I (Math 1710) without prerequisite credit. Some examples of prerequisite credit include: scores of 3 or better on the Calculus AB or BC Advanced Placement Exam, a score of 5 or better on the higher-level IB mathematics exam, and dual credit in mathematics courses with Texas Common Course Numbers: Math 2312 or 2412. If you would like to take Calculus I as your initial course and do not have prior prerequisite credit, you will be required to take the placement assessment. If your major requires Calculus I, then you are strongly encouraged to take the placement assessment.

1. You are expected to take the online Pearson MyMathTest (MMT) prior to coming to your orientation session. Doing this is important for students majoring in Math, Engineering, Science, Economics (BS) and who need to start with Calculus I (Math 1710) or a Business major who needs Business Calculus (Math 1190).

2. You will find how to access the test and other important information about the placement assessment on the Math Department’s website. Go to: www.math.unt.edu, under ‘Courses and Schedules’ select ‘Math Placement’.

Students taking the Foreign Language Placement Exam may earn up to 12 hours of foreign language credit. The exam may be taken only once per language. Many degrees at UNT require some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Review your degree requirements at catalog.unt.edu to see if a foreign language is required. The placement test is free to take, but if you would like the credits earned from the test applied to your transcript there is a $53 fee that will be applied to your student account.

Exams for placement and/or credit are offered in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. The foreign language placement/credit exam will be available each orientation session. In addition, the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers proficiency exams for languages not offered at UNT. For more information, contact the Department of World Languages and Literatures or Department of Spanish at 940.565.2404.

All students who are not music majors but are interested in being involved with the College of Music during their time at UNT should plan to attend the music session during orientation to find out more about music minors, music classes for non music majors, auditioning for any of the performance groups, and the possibility of taking private lessons for the fall semester. We will also have information on applying and auditioning to become a music major available at this meeting.

Students who have successfully auditioned for the College of Music do not attend this session. Anyone considering auditioning for a band, choir, or orchestra should attend this session. The information session will be available each orientation session. You will receive a schedule with specific times and locations at check in.

Students with a complex medical condition are urged to meet with a medical provider at the UNT Student Health and Wellness Center to review their medical history. This review will allow staff to understand your unique medical situation and help us provide accommodations to meet your needs.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICESThe University of North Texas Transportation Services welcomes you to campus, and would like to congratulate you on becoming the newest addition to the Mean Green family! Transportation Services is committed to providing safe, reliable parking as well as related motorist assistance to the University community. We support the mission of the University through a collaborative effort that emphasizes flexibility, fairness, sensitivity, and mutual respect. Our goal is to help you understand the ins and outs of getting around the UNT campus. We are here for you! As a new incoming student, you have options! Incoming students who choose to bring a car to campus will need to purchase a UNT parking permit. Parking permits allow students to park their vehicles in lots throughout campus. Permits can be purchased online and will be available for preorder for the upcoming academic year in April. Visit the UNT Transportation Services website, transportation.unt.edu, for more information. For students who choose not to bring a car to campus, the means of transportation at UNT are vast and navigating around campus is easy. Purchasing a permit is not required for students without cars. The following options show the transit methods available to you at UNT:

• UNT Bus Service – Service provided by Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA). With 8 routes and 60 destinations, students can easily get around campus and where they need to go throughout the Denton community.• E-ride – Service provides late night transportation across campus. There are fixed, continuous routes at UNT between the hours of 7pm – 7am, Monday – Thursday and 4pm – 7am, Friday – Sunday. Service can also be requested by calling an on demand dispatcher.• Zipcar – Service allows UNT students, 18 and older, to rent a car by the hour, allowing access to the Denton community and surrounding areas with a reserved parking spot upon return.

For more information about transit options, please visit our website at transportation.unt.edu. For additional parking needs, UNT works with Parkmobile to provide short-term options. Lots throughout campus have initiated the use of this service, allowing students to park and pay for the time spent on campus. Students pay for parking wirelessly through an app on their smartphone or device while in the parking lot near their vehicle. Parkmobile signs are clearly displayed to show which lots allow this payment method. Transportation Services hopes you find our options and amenities useful. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have by contacting us at [email protected] or 940.565.3020.

Living on Campus The application for housing and the ability to edit preferences on an existing application is accessible through your eHousing account. Room assignments, for those students with a complete application, begin in May. Once assigned, the ability to change application preferences or room assignments is extremely limited. Mean Green Move-In Weekend, the opening of the residence halls for the Fall 2018 semester, will be Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19. Housing will be communicating to students about arrival and move-in plans during the summer. There will be volunteers on hand from across the UNT community throughout the weekend to help with move-in. Come early, move in and get ready for the start of First Flight Week.

Student Financial Aid & Scholarships

When Filing The FAFSA:

Step 1: Provide your correct Social Security Number.Step 2: Complete the asset and income information. Do not

leave it blank. For questions regarding income, if the answer is zero or if the question does not apply to you, enter 0.

Step 3: Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. If you and/or your parents already filed a federal tax return with the IRS, you may be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool which is the best and easiest way to provide accurate tax information. With just a few simple steps, you and/or your parents can transfer information directly into your FAFSA.

Step 4: List our Title IV Federal School Code: 003594.

Tips for Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

After You Have Applied:

Step 1: Check your Student Aid Report (SAR) for accuracy. You will receive a copy of your SAR via email or mail about a week after the FAFSA has been filed. The SAR summarizes information provided on the FAFSA. The SAR will also indicate Pell Grant eligibility, if any, and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).Step 2: Monitor your myUNT Student Portal located at my.unt.edu frequently for status updates. Once all requests for additional documents have been satisfied, you will be able to accept, decline or reduce your award offers.Step 3: Keep copies of all documents and correspondence.

Code of Student ConductThe Dean of Students Office enforces the Code of Student Conduct. The Code explains what conduct is prohibited, the process the university uses to review alleged violations, and the sanctions that can be imposed. When students may have violated the Code they meet with a university official to discuss the violation in an educational process. Anyone can report alleged misconduct to the Dean of Students Office by calling 940.565.2039, emailing [email protected], or visiting the office in the University Union, suite 409. Anyone who has experienced dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment, or sexual violence can contact the Dean of Students Office (940.565.2039), the Title IX Coordinator (940.565.2711), or the UNT Police Department (940.565.3000) to file a report.

Assistance, support, and referrals to other support agencies are available regardless of any request for disciplinary action. A student who has been impacted by dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment, or sexual violence can receive assistance through the UNT Survivor Advocate. The Survivor Advocate can be reached by calling 940.565.2648, emailing [email protected], or visiting the office in the University Union, Suite 411.

The Code of Student Conduct can be found on the Dean of Students website at deanofstudents.unt.edu/conduct.

Eagle Alert SystemThe UNT Eagle Alert system notifies the UNT community with immediate emergency information. Students should update their phone number online through the MyUNT portal, my.unt.edu, by logging in with valid UNT credentials—your EUID and password. In the top of the right column, look for Eagle Alert, then click on “Update your information.”

The Eagle Alert system allows UNT administrators to contact campus community members quickly by phone about critical or emergency situations affecting the safety and wellbeing of people on and around the UNT campus. The system sends a message by recorded voice and text

to the user’s phone and an email to all active students, faculty and staff. The system must have the user’s updated information and permission to send text messages for Eagle Alert. Note: Only phone numbers in the U.S. 50 states are supported. For Twitter users: UNT has an official campus emergency Twitter account. By following @UNTEagleAlert on Twitter, you, your family and friends can receive emergency messages and updates in real time. For more information, visit the Eagle Alert web page, https://www.unt.edu/eaglealert.

For assistance with updating your Eagle Alert information or any other information technology matter, please call, click or come by the University IT Help Desk. UIT Help Desk: 940-565-2324 | [email protected] | https://it.unt.edu/helpdesk | Sage Hall, Room 330D
