Adult Learners are DIFFERENT…

Keep control of the class…respectively

Know the diversity of your class

Use the experience of your class

Your Audience Put yourself in your audiences’ shoes…

Do you know them personally? CAN YOU know them better?

Are they coming on-shift or off? What temperature are they working in? What are some “behind-the-scenes” events

that could be affecting them? What is their LEARNING STYLE?

Learning Styles Auditory

Kinesthetic

All use a combo of these; most have a clear preference.

Learning Style - Auditory HEAR

Would rather listen to things being explained than read about them

Recites info out loud

Likes to have music in background

Can't keep quiet for long periods

Learning Style - Auditory Not afraid to speak up in groups Likes oral reports Good at explaining Remembers names Notices sound effects in movies Enjoys music Good at grammar and foreign language Reads slowly Follows spoken directions well

How to teach an Auditory Learner

Using word association for facts/details

Watching videos

Repeating facts with eyes closed

Participating in group discussions

How to test an Auditory Learner

Worst test type: Reading passages and writing answers

about them in a timed test.

Best test type: Auditory Learners are good at writing

responses to lectures they've heard. They're also good at oral exams.

Learning Style - Visual SEE

Likes graphs, charts, watching a demonstration, reading

May have difficulty focusing while listening to an explanation/lecture

May struggle with… “Listen and Respond” tests Essay exams because can’t recall what they

“heard” in lecture

Learning Style - Visual Good at spelling, but forgets names

Needs quiet study time

Has to think before understanding lecture

Understands/likes charts

Process info best through a “hand-on” approach

Sitting still while studying may be difficult, but writing things down makes it easier to understand

Learning Style - Kinesthetic Good at sports Not great at spelling May not have great handwriting Studies with loud music on Likes adventure books/movies Takes breaks when studying Builds models Gets fidgety during lectures

How to teach a Kinesthetic Learner

Body needs to be in action in order to learn

Allow to stand, doodle, bounce legs, etc.

Have them perform the task, instead of just hearing about or seeing it

STRETCH!!

How to test a Kinesthetic Learner

Worst Test Type: Long tests, essays

Best Test Type: Short definitions, fill-ins, multiple choice
