About the NSLA

The National Summer Learning

Association’s (NSLA) mission is to

convince, connect, and equip program

providers, education leaders, families,

and communities to deliver high-quality

summer learning opportunities to our

nation’s children and youth in order to

help close the achievement gap and

support healthy development.

Through our work, we elevate the

importance of summer learning; support

communities and summer programs in

providing quality services to youth, while

advancing policies and partnerships that

encourage more access to summer

learning experiences for young people,

especially those from low-income

communities.

why summer matters

Summer is the time of greatest inequity for young people.

When schools are closed, many low income young people

lack access to meals, books and other learning resources,

and physical activity.

Research shows that what happens out of school has a significant

impact on what happens in-school for millions of America’s

students. Summer learning programs are proven to maintain and

advance their academic and social growth, keep children safe and

healthy during the summer, and send young people back to school

ready to learn.

THE ROLE OF LIBRARIES IN THE SUMMER MONTHS

Libraries play a special role in the summer when schools are closed and young people need safe spaces and options for inquiry-based learning activities.

Library leaders are recognizing their ability to respond to community learning needs in ways that other organizations cannot.

Libraries are expanding their summer offerings and increasing outreach to engage more kids and families, in more ways and in more places, especially those from low-income communities.

Engaging community partners and stakeholders is critically important to libraries’ summer programming
