ANIMATION BA (HONS) INTEGRATES ART, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY, GIVING OUR GRADUATES A DIVERSE SKILL SET AND PREPARING THEM TO PURSUE A WIDE RANGE OF CAREERS IN AREAS INCLUDING FILM, TELEVISION AND GAMES, THROUGH TO ADVERTISING AND VISUAL EFFECTS (VFX). Our students engage with practitioners and visiting staff who have industry experience working at Aardman, Pixmondo, Framestore and Double Negative. They learn a variety of useful skills – from basics to more advanced technical skills, with the opportunity to focus on 2D, 3D, experimental animation and VFX. In the final year, students are able to work on live project briefs, from which they create a showreel of their creative and professional work.

We are one of the very few universities in the UK certified as a NUKE trainer. NUKE software is used in the VFX industry by many of the major London post-production houses. Students have access to such industry-standard tools as TVPaint, Maya and Mudbox, and to mocap, blue/green screen and audio/video suites.

Students from the course have gone on to work for major production houses, animation studios and games companies.

Kathryn chose to study at DMU because of our strong reputation and the sense of community within the course. She enjoyed the opportunity to spend three years focusing on all aspects of game art, honing her skills in 2D and 3D to a standard she could be proud of.

Kathryn worked for mobile games company Exient as an art intern for three months while studying at DMU, creating props and in game weapons for the latest Angry Birds Transformers title. Working alongside fellow student Anna Kay, Kathryn’s latest project Dropbear: Underground Club sees her work on characters in a 3D underground club environment with cyberpunk elements. She said: “It is incredibly motivating and inspiring to be surrounded by people who are all aiming for a similar goal.

“As well as my own success, it is very rewarding helping others to push themselves in their chosen area of study.”

Kathryn is currently applying for art positions at Games Development companies, hoping to work as a character artist in future.

EACH YEAR HAS BROUGHT WITH IT MORE OPPORTUNITIES: NEW PROJECTS, TEAM BRIEFS, WORKING ABROAD. I COULDN’T HAVE HAD A MORE DIVERSE RANGE OF OPTIONS AND EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE FOR ME TO EMBRACE.

GAME ART DESIGN BA (HONS)

The Skillset accreditation, industry value and well-equipped facilities available at DMU are what supported Chelsea’s decision to study with us.

Having no prior experience in 3D art, Chelsea has praised the meticulous teaching and opportunity to work with like-minded individuals to develop her skills. She said: “I learned everything here, from the absolute basics all the way up to a well-equipped industry skill set.”

Chelsea and a team of five students entered Crytek’s Off the Map competition last year, winning first prize at Nottingham’s GameCity8. As part of her course, she also worked as a visualisation intern at BMW in Munich for a year to develop new cultural understanding and increase her independence. She said: “Seeing how your skills apply to real-world positions is an eye-opening experience that broadens your horizons on where your degree can actually take you – in this case, my qualifications in 3D were applicable to not just the games industry, but also to automotive presentation and design.”

After graduation, Chelsea hopes to become a general artist in a games studio.

Ewart O’Connor - Graphic Design BA (Hons) Student scooped award in the national Starpack Student Awards for the Well-Shaped Fishcake.

WINNER OF THE STDUENT STARPACK COMPETITION

Ewart O’Connor Graphic Design BA (Hons) won gold in the Starpack Student Awards UK and went on to finish in the top 10 best new designs worldwide in the World Packaging Organisation’s World Star Awards as the only UK winner on the shortlist. The brief was to

come up with a way of making sustainable Norwegian fishcakes more appealing to shoppers for the Norway Seafood Council. Instead of traditional round “cake” shapes, Ewart came up with triangles and decided to use the council’s sustainability ethos throughout his design. All the packaging used was re-usable and recyclable, while the cardboard sleeve used a simple interlocking closure tab meaning it did not need glue.

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION BA (HONS)Graphic Design and Illustration BA (Hons) covers a wide range of image-making skills, and the finalists have all studied how to apply these skills in a professional setting in dedicated facilities. By making use of computer suites, multi-purpose studios and large workshops on campus, our students have developed their knowledge in a practical setting while focusing on modules such as Context and Communication, Image Making and Illustration and Media Communication Technology for Illustration. In the final year students have the opportunity to work on live briefs for real clients and take on several projects, some of which were entered into competitions both nationally and internationally.

GRAPHIC DESIGN BA (HONS)Throughout the Graphic Design BA (Hons) course, our students worked on a series of projects to explore and develop their skills in creative graphic communication and problem solving. They have experienced continuous assessment and learned critical interpersonal skills with the support of tutors, peers and industry experts. Each student has chosen special topics in addition to studying Context and Communication, Integrated Graphic Studies, and Applied Professional Practice Studies, among other modules. They have become accustomed to working on live project briefs set by clients and fulfilling them using our professional facilities.

THE MACMILLAN PRIZE

The Macmillan Prize was established by Macmillan Children’s Books to stimulate new work from young illustrators, and to help them take the first steps in their professional lives. This coveted award, which is currently in its 30th year, has discovered talent such as Sara Fanelli, Lucy Cousins, Emily Gravett, Cat Rayner and Gemma Merino, among many others. Our Graphic Design and Illustration students benefit from entering the annual MacMillan Children’s Book Competition which has

been the stimuli for many careers in publishing and collaborations between illustrators and authors. Students also benefit from visiting lecturers such as Pippa Goodhart (Winnie The Witch) and Michaela Morgan (Blue Peter Children’s Book Prize).

THE STUDENT STARPACK COMPETITION

This international package design competition was established in 1964, and challenges students from a wide range of courses, such as graphics, structural/product design, and materials/

technology, to submit solutions to problems set by brand-leading FMCG companies, design agencies, and manufacturers. The expectation is that students really challenge conventional thinking and break the rules with off-the-wall creativity and clever use of materials. The winners enjoy global recognition and frequent offers of employment.

After visiting an open day, Ewart says he immediately understood that the tutors were ‘not only passionate about design, but they genuinely cared about our progress as an individual’. He has praised the course for preparing him for a career in graphic design by setting challenging and commercial briefs, and appreciates getting regular feedback to guide his projects.

He said: “DMU is unique for me because of the experience I have gained whilst studying here. It is easy to say that the facilities are phenomenal or the campus is well established but that is something any other university could replicate.”

“The experience is something that comes from the people you are inspired by, surrounded by and supported by. I wouldn’t have chosen to study anywhere else.”

Ewart was offered three graphic design jobs before handing in his final year project, and has accepted an offer to work as a graphic designer at Me and Him Design.

DERRY HOLT COMPUTER GAMES PROGRAMMING BSC (HONS)

[email protected]

The content of the course and facilities offered at DMU are what made Derry want to study with us. Derry said he learnt how to programme; a skill he claims is ‘one for the future’ as the age of technology continues to grow.

While studying at DMU, Derry completed a placement year as a junior programmer for Exient Ltd, working on mobile game Angry Birds Go! for Rovio. He said: “The placement saw me live in Oxford for seven months and Malta for five. Living abroad was a fantastic educational opportunity – it helped cement that what I’d been learning at university was relevant to working in the industry.”

Derry, alongside fellow student James Heath, won the Business Venture Competition, Entrepreneur Award through the Campus Enterprise Opportunities at DMU for their pitch on Stormburst Studios - their video games development company. The company hopes to have their first mobile game out by Christmas.

THE FACILITIES OFFERED HERE FOR MY COURSE WERE SECOND TO NONE. THE INVESTMENT DMU HAD PUT INTO THESE FACILITIES, WHICH WERE FOR EXCLUSIVE USE BY STUDENTS ON COMPUTER GAMES PROGRAMMING, SHOWED THAT THEY CARED DEEPLY ABOUT THE COURSE AND THE SUCCESS OF THOSE ON IT.
