What makes a Social Enterprise?

1. Have a clear social and/or environmental mission set out in their governing documents

2. Generate the majority of their income through trade

3. Reinvest the majority of their profits

4. Be autonomous of state

5. Be majority controlled in the interests of the social mission

6. Be accountable and transparent

In the UK

• 70,000 social enterprises in the UK

• employ almost a million people and

• contribute £18.5 billion to the UK economy (based upon 2012 Small Business Survey, 2013).

• Almost half (49%) of all social enterprises are five years old or less and 35% are three years old or less

• 31% of social enterprises are working in the top 20% most deprived communities in the UK

• Job creators: 41% of social enterprises created jobs in the past 12 months compared to 22% of SMEs

Social Enterprise in Cumbria

• Around 700-800 Social Enterprises.

• Contribute £275m to the economy.

• Provide 4,000 jobs and involve 5,000 volunteers.

• Vast variation in size and type.

• Operate in many different sectors.

• Supported by Cumbria Social Enterprise Partnership.

Social Enterprises often….

• Enhance service provision in areas where private and public sector provision is lacking.

• Operate in activities that have a lower profit margin than would be acceptable to the private sector.

• Exploit gaps in the market not served by other enterprises.

• Benefit a specific community.

• Operate in places that are unattractive to others.

• Operate in activities for ethical and ideological reasons.

• Employ people that are disadvantaged in the job market.
