Welcome to theSmaRTGas Baltic pre-meeting
29 October 2015
Jörgen Held, Renewtec AB
SmaRTGas – the idea
The idea is to connect international and national experts conducting spearhead R&D on small scale gasification and methanation with stakeholders interested in the biomethane market opportunities including upstream actors (forestry, agriculture, waste management etcetera) in order to take advantage of locally available feedstock and promote regional development and create new job opportunities.
Why small scale (~10 MWth)?
• Lower financial risk due to a lower investment cost • Easier to secure the feedstock supply• Easier logistic since less feedstock is needed• Easier to match excess heat with local heat or steam demand• Possible synergies with existing biogas plants• Indirect gasification allows high conversion efficiency even in
small scale plants
Are there any available technologies and what about the costs?
Technology studyStudy on small and medium scale bioSNG production.
Exist technologies adopted for small and medium scale (5-30 MWth)
Specific investment cost for a small scale plant (5.6 MWth) lower than for the 32 MWth GoBiGas I plant!

Market study – production cost
http://www.renewtec.se/Report_002.2014.pdf
The bioSNG production cost based on gasification of wood chips in the 5.6 MWth scale is in an interval of commercial interest!
~80 €cent/Nm3 is of commercial interest in Sweden
Investigate the conditions to build up an innovation cluster
Ongoing project coordinated by Renewtec AB in collaboration with BioMil AB and the project partners: www.smartgas.se The project is co-financed by Region Skåne.
Next step - Create and establish the SmaRTGas innovation cluster
The ambition is to apply for public funding (~400,000€) for a three year project (2016-2018) at the end of this year at the Swedish Energy Agency.Following partners have already signed LOI:s regarding participation and co-financing of the innovation cluster.TU Vienna, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, TU München, Chalmers, Luleå University of Technology, Paul Scherrer Institute, UCSD, Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy, Montanuniversität Leoben, German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ), VTT and TU Berlin…
…and many more are on their way!
