Consider Some New Year’s (Financial) ResolutionsWe’re just about ready to open the door to 2017, so you might be thinking about some New Year’s resolutions. What’s on your list this year? More visits to the gym? Learning a new language? Mastering the perfect beefbourguignon? All worthy ambitions, of course, but why not also include some financial resolutions?

By reviewing your needs and goals, you can identify some resolutions that are particularly relevant to your own situation. But here are a few suggestions:

• Build an emergency fund. If you needed amajor car repair or a new furnace, or faced some other large, unanticipated expense, could you cope with it? If you didn’t have the money readily available, you might haveto dip into those investments intended for long-term goals, such as retirement. Instead, build an emergency fund containingthree to six months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk account.

• Cut down on debts. It’s not easy to cut down on one’s debt load. But if you can findways to reduce your debts, you’ll help improve your overall financial picture. Manydebts are not “useful” – that is, they don’t carry any tax advantages – so every dollar you spend to pay down those debts is a dollar you could use to invest for your future.

• Boost contributions to your retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Your earnings have the potential to grow tax deferred and your contributions may lower your taxable income. Plus, most plans offer a selection of investment options, so you can choose the investment mix that fits your objectives and risk tolerance. Therefore, if your salary goes up this year, or if you think you can find other ways to free up some money, increase your contributions to your retirement plan.

• Review your portfolio. Is your investment

portfolio still on track toward helping you meet your long-term goals? If not, you may need to make some changes. You’ll also want to study your investment mix to make sure it still accurately reflects your risk tolerance. Over time, and often without your taking any significant actions, your portfolio can “drift” to a place where you aretaking on too much risk – or even too little risk – for your needs and long-term objectives. If this happens, you may need to“rebalance” your holdings.

• Avoid mistakes. None of us can avoid all mistakes, in life and in our investment activities. But as an investor, you’ll clearly benefit from minimizing your errors. For example, it’s generally a mistake to jump out of the market in response to a period of volatility. If you wait for things to “calm down” before investing again, you might miss out on the opportunity to participate in the next market rally.

• Think long term. Keep this in mind: You’re not investing for today or tomorrow, but for many years from now. Try to keep a long-term focus when making all your key investment decisions. By doing so, you can avoid overreacting to short-term developments, such as a sudden drop in the market or a “momentous” political event that actually decreases in importance as time goes by.

Try to follow these financial resolutions as best as you can. You could make 2017 a year to remember.

Oath Keepers’ Community Preparedness Team (CPT)

(Some excerpts from www.OathKeepers.org.) Oath Keepers’ Community Preparedness Team (CPT) Project is working to make America strong again, from the bottom up, by having well trained, experienced military, police, and first responder veterans come together and lead the way in preparing their communities for any disaster, either naturalor man-made. Even if you are not a veteran, you are welcome to join us and get trained, and then help train others. We find that nearly everyone already has some skill or life experience that is useful to the community!

Our teams can provide direct assistance to our community, but they are first and foremost training cadre to train other groups and individuals in the critical skills they will need in any disaster.

If you already have an existing group, such as a neighborhood watch, church group, veterans group, political or social group, we would be happy to train your folks in all of the above skills.

Americans are told by FEMA to be able to self-rescue and self-supply for at least 72 hours, but clearly emergencies can last much longer. You need to be able to take care ofyourselves and each other for extended periods, including effective food storage. We will show you how.

Locally, Oath Keeper chapters reach out to the community by having free workshops andclasses on topics such as gardening, canning, greenhouses, seed saving, amateur ham radios, compass and land navigation, essential oils, gun safety and more. These men and women volunteer their time and resources to neighbors while remaining alert to any infringements on our Constitutional rights. See what they offer by checking out www.meetup.com/INW-Oath-Keepers/ - odds are, an Oath Keeper is your neighbor!

If you are serious about caring for you and yours in what may be troubled times - or if you just want to walk more lightly upon this earth - we welcome you; please invite your friends, neighbors, and co-workers to also join us! Check out our calendar; click: https://www.meetup.com/inwPrep/events/

Russell Spriggs facilitates local off-grid, gardening and sustainable living classes at www.inwPrep.com . He is a Vietnam era veteran who has actuallylived off-grid with solar power, gravity-fed water systems, organic greenhouses, dairy goats, poultry, and 40 years withhoneybees.

Letters to the Editorre: End of the Rathdrum Weekly News

It is with a sad heart that I read your lastissue. I have really enjoyed your weeklynewsletter because it really gave me apulse of the community. I wish there wassome way I could have helped, but I am stillthree months away from retirement atwhich time I’ll be moving to Rathdrum.

Thank you for all you have done for thecommunity.

Steven

Editor – I am glad you enjoyed reading ournewsletter.

Joe,

I'd like to be so bold as to say that you arenot perceived as "quitting" RWN, but rathermoving on in life. One completes highschool, completes a residency in a town, completes a relationship, etc.

The Universe does not tolerate a void; it isalways filled, often by new relationships, endeavors and challenges. Congratulationson completing one process - successfully! -and moving on to another.

Thanks!

Russ

Editor – Thanks for your kind words.Currently I am not sure what I will be doing with all my 'extra' time, but as you say, the universe abhors a vacuum. Maybe I will take up shoveling snow…

You can't say it often enough. I want to thank everyone who contributed articles, stories, calendar events, advertising, and the businesses that appeared in our pages; and to everyone who read it.

For those who are not in the know, the phrase 'So Long and Thanks for All the Fish' was the title of the fourth Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy book first published in November 1984. Coincidentally, it was the message left by the dolphins when they left the Earth before it was destroyed to make room for the hyperspace bypass.
