Exercise: 6 benefits of regular physical activity By Mayo Clinic Staff

Want to feel better, have more energy and even add years to your life? Just exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. Everyone benefits from exercise, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing to get moving? Check out these six ways exercise can lead to a happier, healthier you.

1. Exercise controls weight Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. Regular trips to the gym are great, but don't worry if you can't find a large chunk of time to exercise every day. Any amount of activity is better than none at all. To reap the benefits of exercise, just get more active throughout your day — take the stairs instead of the elevator or rev up your household chores. Consistency is key.

2. Exercise combats health conditions and diseases Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight is, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, and it decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular exercise helps prevent or manage many health problems and concerns. It can also help improve cognitive function and helps lower the risk of death from all causes.

3. Exercise improves mood Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A gym session or brisk walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier, more relaxed and less anxious. You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem.

4. Exercise boosts energy Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lung health improve, you have more energy to tackle daily chores.

5. Exercise promotes better sleep Struggling to snooze? Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster, get better sleep and deepen your sleep. Just don't exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to go to sleep.

6. Exercise can be fun … and social! Exercise and physical activity can be enjoyable. They give you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. So take a dance class, hit the hiking trails or join a soccer team. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and just do it. Bored? Try something new, or do something with friends or family.

The bottom line on exercise Exercise and physical activity are great ways to feel better, boost your health and have fun. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends: At least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. The guidelines suggest that you spread this exercise throughout the week. Examples include running, walking or swimming. Even small amounts of physical activity are helpful, and accumulated activity throughout the day adds up to provide health benefits. Strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week. Examples include lifting free weights, using weight machines or doing body-weight training. Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any concerns about your fitness, haven't exercised for a long time, have chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis.

FOR ALL PARISHIONERS

GRATEFUL HEART ~ GIVING HEART

Did you know that Catholics give less to charity than almost any other major U.S. religion? Christians in general tithe about 2.2% of their income. While that number isn’t much to be proud of, Catholics average half that amount according to Charles Zech’s Why Catholics Don’t

Give …And What Can Be Done About It.

The problem with having many possessions is that they can distract us from our identities as children of God. Money can be a great blessing but it can also cause a person to lose his soul. It does not matter whether you have very little money or great amounts of wealth, the temptation to use it selfishly is a danger for most of us. The Certified Financial Planner Board estimates that nearly one third of lottery winners end up bankrupt. While this could be because they give it all away, it is more likely that this wealth is wasted on big homes and fast cars. What is obvious is that people who have large sums of money given to them unexpectedly are

generally not good stewards of their wealth. ~Excerpt from “Catholic Tithing and Almsgiving” Aquinas & More

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AT SACRED HEART

God of compassion, You created a world for us

To know your love and peace Yet amidst the beauty of creation

We encounter pain and hurt And forces beyond our control.

At times like this our hearts are shaken and ache with sorrow.

At the destruction of our lives, homes and livelihoods. Hear our prayers for those affected by the floods

And for all those working To bring relief and fresh hope. Amen

Did you know that your St. Vincent de Paul conference provides financial donations and emergency disaster assistance? We have provided donations to the areas struggling with flooding this spring. Last year, our volunteers were present in Marshalltown to assist with financial needs and moral support after the devastating tornado. All that we do, is done with compassion. In everyone we meet and serve, we see the face of Christ. We all have our crosses to bear in life and our members strive to assist all those in need with compassion, confidentiality, kindness, and love for our fellow man. We thank you for your generosity at our 5th Sunday Collections!

ALZHEIMER’S EDUCATION PROGRAM

Communication is more than just talking and listening—it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, and body language. As the disease progresses, individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias lose the ability to use words, but families can find new ways to connect.

Join us to explore how communication changes when someone is living with Alzheimer’s, learn how to interpret the verbal and behavioral communication, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

The program will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in the St. Clare Room from 4:30-6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23rd. Call Diane Carlson at 515-371-3370 to learn more or to RSVP. Walk-ins welcome.

FOR ALL PARISHIONERS

JUNE 15/16: WELCOME FR. KUOL

Each year the Diocese of Des Moines supports the missionary call of the church by having parishes host a missionary priest. This year we welcome Fr. Kuol to Masses June 15/16. There will be a collection at each Mass for this appeal. Thank you for your generosity fulfilling the missionary call of our church.

My name is Fr. Kuol Dut, one of “The Lost Boys of Sudan”, who came from Kenya to the United States in 2001. I come from the Catholic Diocese of Wau, South Sudan. I was ordained priest by then Bishop of El Obeid Diocese (Sudan), Bishop Macram Max Gassis, on April 1, 2015, at Sts. Peter & Paul Parish in Twic State, South Sudan. I’m now the pastor of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Parish in Twic State, South Sudan.

When I was about eight years old, I was forced by civil war to leave my parents, siblings, relatives, friends and go to Ethiopia for refuge. It took me three-month-foot-walk to reach the refugees camp full of horrors characterized by agony, humiliation, insecurity, starvation, confusion, hopelessness, moral decay, spiritual desolation, and filthiness.

For 2 years, I lived in the camp until I was forced back to Sudan when the Ethiopian government was overthrown in 1991. After struggling between life and death, I made it to Kakuma refugees camp (Kenya) in August 1992. I stayed there until I was resettled to the United States in 2001. After living briefly in Atlanta, Georgia, I moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where I joined the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls as a seminarian in 2004. In March, 2010, after deep discernment, I felt God’s call to return to South Sudan to share His love and Word with his people.

Your donations will enable our Diocese’ organization, Bishop Gassis Relief and Rescue Foundation (BGRRF) to provide equality education, healthcare, food, and clean water to the poorest of the poor (orphans, widows, elderly, sick, refugees, abandoned, etc) living within and outside our diocese. Thanks and God bless you abundantly!

John Kirchner from LPi, our bulletin printer, will be in our office the week of June 24th, securing new ads for our bulletin. Please consider purchasing an ad, sponsoring a charity, or in Memory of a Loved One. Your participation makes our bulletin successful, and you attract customers!
