Using The Battery

TheJitterbug®RechargeableBatteryisdesignedtodeliveranefficientchargetoyourJitterbug for up to 10 to 12 days of standby time.

Installing And Removing The Battery

To install the battery:

1.SlidetheroundedendofthebatteryintothebackofyourJitterbug, lining up the gold contacts on the battery with the gold contacts inside the phone.

2. Press the top of the battery down until it snaps into place.

To remove the battery:

1.Ifthephoneison,turnitoffbyopeningyourJitterbugandholding down the buttonuntiltheJitterbuglogoappears.Thephonewillthenturnoff.

2.Turnthephoneoverandpressthebatteryrelease button .

3. Lift the battery 2 up and away from your Jitterbug by using the slots on each side.

TheJitterbugRechargeableBatterymustbefullychargedbeforeusingthephoneforthefirsttime.Werecommendaninitialchargeofupto12hours.Failuretodosomaydamageyourbattery.IfyouuseyourJitterbugwithoutcharging the battery, and it is critically low, it will turn itself off.

Charging The Battery

Your Jitterbug®canbechargedwiththeincludedBatteryChargerorwiththeCarChargerthat can be purchased by visiting www.jitterbug.com/accessories.

Using the Battery Charger:

1.ABatteryChargerisincludedintheboxwithyourJitterbug.

2.PlugthelargeendoftheBatteryChargerintoastandardwalloutlet(110/220VAC).

3.Plugthesmallerendwiththeblackarrowindicator facing up into the PowerConnector.You’llseea“Charging”messageontheOutsideDisplay.

4. When the battery is fully charged, you’ll see a “Charging Completed” message on theOutsideDisplay.PleasereferenceSection1,page8formoreinformationontheOutsideDisplay.

Battery Level Indicator

Jitterbugphonesremindyoutochargeyourbattery.RemindersappearontheInsideDisplaywiththefollowingmessages: • Battery Low – a low battery alert and a message will tell you that your battery is

beginning to get low. • Battery Critical – a low battery alert and a message will appear when the battery

and has approximately 15% of battery life remaining.

JitterbugbatterieshavebeendesignedspecificallyfortheJitterbugphone. Using other batteries could damage your Jitterbug and may void your warranty.

YoucaneasilychecktheremainingchargeontheJitterbugbatterybynavigating to the Phone Info menu and pressing the button to view. Please reference Section 1, page 18 for more information on Phone Info.

Using Your Jitterbug® For The First Time

Turning your Jitterbug on:

1.OpenyourJitterbug.

2. Press the buttonintheupperrightcornerofthekeypaduntilyourJitterbugturnsonandtheJitterbuglogoappearsontheInsideDisplay.

3.Whenyouhearadialtone,yourJitterbughasserviceandisreadytouse.Ifaconnection is not possible, a “No Service”messagewillappearontheOutsideDisplayandadialtonewillnotbeheard.

Your Main Screen:

Foryourconvenience,eachtimeyouturnyourJitterbugon,youwill see the Main Screen as show in the following diagram:

TheMain Screen will display your Jitterbug phone number at the top of the screen as shown in the following screen as, “My # 800-733-6632.”

TheMain Screen is where you access the features on your Jitterbug. Your Jitterbug is designed with the following four features installed in your phone:

1. Phone Book – store up to 50 of the names and numbers that you call most often. JitterbugOperatorscanevenset-upthePhone Book for you. Please reference Section 3, page 51 for more information.

You can easily access all of your features within the Main Screen using three simple buttonslocatedatthetopofthekeypad.

1. Use the “Up/Down” button to scroll through the features of the Main Screen.

2. When the feature you want to select is highlighted in gray in the middle of the InsideDisplay,pressthe button to select that feature.

The button enables you to answer “No”toquestionsintheActionLineandreturntoapreviousscreen.IfyoumakeamistakewhiledialinganumberortypingaTextMessage,youcanalwayspressthe buttontobackupanddelete what you entered.

Making your first call:

1. YoucanmakeacalldirectlyfromyourMain Screenatanytimebyusingyourkeypad.Simply enter the ten digit phone number and press the button to dial.

2. You will see “Calling...”ontheInsideDisplayfollowedby“Connected”confirmingyouareconnected–asdisplayedon the following screen.

3. Whenyourcallisfinished,pressthe button or close your Jitterbug to end the call.

4. YoucanalsomakeacalldirectlyfromyourPhone Book. Starting from the Main Screen, use the “Up/Down” button to scroll to the “Phone Book” and press the button. When youfindthedesirednameandnumber,pressthe button againtomakethecall.

IfyoueverfindyourselfconfusedwhenusingyourJitterbug,® there are two easy ways to return to the Main Screen. Simply press the button several times in a row, or close and then re-open your phone at any time. Both of these options will give you a fresh start at the Main Screen.

To turn your Jitterbug off:

1. Press and hold the buttonintheupperrightcornerofthekeypaduntiltheJitterbuglogoappearsintheInsideDisplay.

2. Your Jitterbug will then turn off.

Call Waiting–ifanothercallcomesinwhenyouareonacall,youwillbenotifiedbyanaudible tone and may switch over to the new call. Please reference Section 2, page 47 for more information.

Placing A Call

Dialing manually:

With your Jitterbug,® you can dial a phone number directly from almost every screen on your Jitterbug.

1. OpenyourJitterbug.Youwillhearadialtonetoindicatethatthereisserviceavailable.Ifserviceis not available, there will be no dial tone and you will see “No Service”ontheOutsideDisplay.

2.Dialthefulltendigitnumberusingyourkeypad.Youmayberequiredtodialthenumber“1”firstbeforeplacingacallinsomeareas.

3. Press the buttontoplacethecallwhenyouarefinisheddialing.

Using your Phone Book to make a call:

ToplaceacalltoanumberinyourPhone Book:

1. Starting from the Main Screen, use the “Up/Down” button and scroll to the “Phone Book” untilitappearshighlightedingrayinthemiddleoftheInsideDisplay.

2. Press the button to view your “Phone Book.”

3. Your Phone Bookwillalwaysstartwiththefirstnameandnumber you’ve entered in the Phone Book, as indicated by the number “1”inthetoprightcorneroftheInsideDisplay.You can manage the order of the names and numbers of your Phone Book at www.MyJitterbug.com. Please reference Section 3, page 54 to learn more about www.MyJitterbug.com.

4. You can scroll through the names and numbers in your Phone Book by pressing the “Up/Down” button.

5.Whenyoufindthedesirednameandnumber,pressthe buttontomakethecall.

6. You will see “Calling...” ontheInsideDisplayfollowedby“Connected”toconfirmyouareconnected,asshown.

7.Whenyou’refinishedwiththecall,pressthe button or close your Jitterbug® to end the call.

While in the Phone Book, you can dial any phone numberyouneedbyusingthekeypad.Simplydialthenumber you wish to call and press the button to connect.

Speakerphone

TheSpeakerphoneprovidesyoutheconveniencetomakeacallwithoutholdingthephone to your ear.

1.ToturnyourSpeakerphone on, press the “Speakerphone” button on the top leftcornerofyourkeypad.

2. You will hear an audible beep indicating that your Speakerphone is now on.

3. With the Speakerphone on, you can manually dial phone numbers, use your Phone Book and other features.

4. With the Speakerphoneyoudonotneedtoholdthephonetoyourear.Dependingonyoursurroundings,youcanenjoyaconversationusingyourSpeakerphone up to two feet from your Jitterbug.®

5.ToturnoffyourSpeakerphone, press the “Speakerphone” button on the top leftcornerofyourkeypad.

IfyouchoosetoturntheSpeakerphone off during a call, your conversation will not end.Theaudiowillbetransferredtotheearpiecespeakerthatyouholdtoyourear.

IfyoucloseyourJitterbugduringaconversationwhileusingtheSpeakerphone, the call will end and the Speakerphone will be turned off.

Receiving A Call

Your Jitterbug®ringsorvibrates(dependingonhowyousettheringervolumelevel)toindicateanincomingcall.Additionally,thereareotherindicationsofincomingcalls.

Indicators of an incoming call when your Jitterbug is open:

• TheLightSignalonthefrontofyourJitterbugflashes.

• ThenameorphonenumberofthepersoncallingwillappearontheOutsideDisplay.

• Ifthecaller’snumberisstoredinyourPhone Book then the nameandnumberwillappearontheInsideDisplay,asshown.

• Ifthecallercannotbeidentified,youmaynotseethephonenumber or you may see “Unavailable” or “Restricted.”

Ignoring A Call

To ignore a call when your Jitterbug is closed:

When the phone is ringing you can press the volume button to mute the ringer.IfVoice Mail is active, the caller will be directed to your Voice Mail.IfVoice Mail is not active, callers will get a message that you are not available.

To ignore a call when your Jitterbug is open:

You can send a caller directly to your Voice Mail by pressing the button when you see “ANSWER?” atthebottomoftheInsideDisplay.Thiswillgiveanunavailablemessage if you do not have Voice Mail.

Toignoreanincomingcallwhileyouarealreadyonacall,pressthe button.

Your Jitterbug will continue to ring until: •Youanswerthecall •Thecallingpartyhangsup •Youmutetheringer •ThecallissenttoVoice Mail

Vibrate Mode

TurntheringeroffbyopeningyourJitterbug® and pressing the volume button on the outside of the phone until “Vibrate”appearsontheInsideDisplay.YourJitterbugwillbeset to vibrate to alert you of incoming calls.

Using Call History To See Recent Calls

Setting Your Samsung WEP700 Premium Bluetooth Headset To Pairing Mode

ThefirststepinsettingupanyBluetooth device is called “Pairing.”ThisstepisrequiredbecausetherearenowirestolinkyourJitterbugtoyourBluetooth device. “Pairing” happens when your Jitterbug and your Bluetooth device agree to communicate with one another. By “Pairing,” your Jitterbug recognizes your Bluetooth device and the two devices automatically accept communication from each other.

IfyouturnonyourSamsungWEP700PremiumBluetoothheadsetforthefirsttime,itproceeds into Pairing Modeimmediately.IfyouhavealreadypairedyourBluetooth headset and wish to pair it with another phone, you must turn off your headset before entering Pairing Mode. Simply press and hold the “Answer/End” button in the middle of your Bluetooth headset for several seconds until the blue indicator light turns on and stays lit afterblinking.ThisindicatesthatyourheadsetisnowinPairing Mode.

What kinds of phones are the subject of this update?

Thetermwirelessphonerefersheretohand–heldwirelessphoneswithbuilt–inantennas,oftencalled“cell,”“mobile”or“PCS”phones.Thesetypesofwirelessphonescanexposetheusertomeasurableradiofrequencyenergy(RF)becauseoftheshortdistancebetweenthephoneandtheuser’shead.TheseRFexposuresarelimitedbyFederalCommunicationsCommissionsafetyguidelinesthatweredevelopedwiththeadviceofFDAandotherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.

FCCalsoregulatesthebasestationsthatthewirelessphonenetworksrelyupon.Whilethese base stations operate at higher power than do the wireless phones themselves, theRFexposuresthatpeoplegetfromthesebasestationsaretypicallythousandsoftimes lower than those they can get from wireless phones.

Basestationsarethusnottheprimarysubjectofthesafetyquestionsdiscussedin this document.

What are the results of the research done already?

Theresearchdonethusfarhasproducedconflictingresultsandmanystudieshavesufferedfromflawsintheirresearchmethods.Animalexperimentsinvestigatingthe




effectsofradiofrequencyenergy(RF)exposurescharacteristicofwirelessphoneshaveyieldedconflictingresultsthatoftencannotberepeatedinotherlaboratories.Afewanimalstudies,however,havesuggestedthatlowlevelsofRFcouldacceleratethedevelopmentofcancerinlaboratoryanimals.However,manyofthestudiesthatshowedincreased tumor development used animals that had been genetically engineered or treated with cancer–causing chemicals so as to be pre–disposed to develop cancer in absenceofRFexposure.OtherstudiesexposedtheanimalstoRFforupto22hoursperday.Theseconditionsarenotsimilartotheconditionsunderwhichpeopleusewirelessphones,sowedon’tknowwithcertaintywhattheresultsofsuchstudiesmeanforhuman health.

ThreelargeepidemiologystudieshavebeenpublishedsinceDecember2000.Betweenthem, the studies investigated any possible association between the use of wireless phones and primary brain cancer, glioma, meningioma or acoustic neuroma, tumors of thebrainorsalivarygland,leukemiaorothercancers.NoneofthestudiesdemonstratedtheexistenceofanyharmfulhealtheffectsfromwirelessphonesRFexposures.

However,noneofthestudiescananswerquestionsaboutlong–termexposures,sincethe average period of phone use in these studies was around three years.

What research is needed to decide whether RF exposure from wireless phones poses a health risk?

Acombinationoflaboratorystudiesandepidemiologicalstudiesofpeopleactuallyusing wireless phones would provide some of the data that are needed. Lifetime animal exposurestudiescouldbecompletedinafewyears.However,verylargenumbersofanimals would be needed to provide reliable proof of a cancer promoting effect if one exists. Epidemiological studies can provide data that is directly applicable to human populations, but ten or more years’ follow–up may be needed to provide answers about some health effects, such as cancer.

Thisisbecausetheintervalbetweenthetimeofexposuretoacancer–causingagentandthetimetumorsdevelopiftheydomaybemany,manyyears.TheinterpretationofepidemiologicalstudiesishamperedbydifficultiesinmeasuringactualRFexposureduringday–to–dayuseofwirelessphones.Manyfactorsaffectthismeasurement,suchas the angle at which the phone is held or which model of phone is used.




What is FDA doing to find out more about the possible health effects of wireless phone RF?

TheFDAisworkingwiththeU.S.NationalToxicologyProgramandgroupsofinvestigatorsaround the world to ensure that high priority animal studies are conducted to address importantquestionsabouttheeffectsofexposuretoradiofrequencyenergy(RF).

What steps can I take to reduce my exposure to radio frequency energy from my wireless phone?

Ifthereisariskfromtheseproducts,andatthispointwedonotknowthatthereis,itisprobablyverysmall.Butifyouareconcernedaboutavoidingevenpotentialrisks,youcantakeafewsimplestepstominimizeyourexposuretoradiofrequencyenergy(RF).Sincetimeisakeyfactorinhowmuchexposureapersonreceives,reducingtheamountoftimespentusingawirelessphonewillreduceRFexposure.• Ifyoumustconductextendedconversationsbywirelessphoneeveryday,youcouldplacemoredistancebetweenyourbodyandthesourceoftheRF,sincetheexposureleveldropsoffdramaticallywithdistance.Forexample,youcoulduseaheadsetandcarry the wireless phone away from your body or use a wireless phone connected to a remote antenna.

Some groups sponsored by other national governments have advised that children be discouragedfromusingwirelessphones.Forexample,thegovernmentintheUnitedKingdomdistributedleafletscontainingsucharecommendationinDecember2000.

Do wireless phone accessories that claim to shield the head from RF radiation work?

SincetherearenoknownrisksfromexposuretoRFemissionsfromwirelessphones,there is no reason to believe that accessories that claim to shield the head from those emissionsreducerisks.SomeproductsthatclaimtoshieldtheuserfromRFabsorptionuse special phone cases, while others involve nothing more than a metallic accessory attachedtothephone.Studieshaveshownthattheseproductsgenerallydonotworkasadvertised.Unlike“hand–free”kits,theseso–called“shields”mayinterferewithproperoperationofthephone.Thephonemaybeforcedtoboostitspowertocompensate,leadingtoanincreaseinRFabsorption.InFebruary2002,theFederalTradeCommission

TheintentoftheHACActistoensurereasonableaccesstotelecommunicationsservicesfor persons with hearing disabilities.

While some wireless phones are used near some hearing devices (hearing aids and cochlearimplants),usersmaydetectabuzzing,hummingorwhiningnoise.Somehearing devices are more immune than others to this interference noise and phones also vary in the amount of interference they generate.

Thewirelesstelephoneindustryhasdevelopedaratingsystemforwirelessphones,toassisthearingdeviceusersfindphonesthatmaybecompatiblewiththeirhearingdevices.Notallphoneshavebeenrated.Phonesthatareratedhavetheratingontheir
