  • The Orlando Sports Foundation is proud to welcome the FieldTurf Cure Bowl All-Star football players, cheerleaders and student athletic trainer aides from 40 public and private high schools in Orange County and Seminole County to the 2020 event. This is a tremendous achievement for these seniors to be recognized tonight as All-Stars.

The game is between Orange County Public Schools and Seminole County Public Schools, supplemented with players from private schools in the two-county area. Every All-Star is highlighted by performing their specialty one last time as a high school student. Many former All-Star football players have received student-athlete scholarships and continued their football careers at colleges around the nation.

Cheerleaders, marching band members and student athletic trainer aides rarely receive All-Star recognition with the same importance as All-Star student-athletes. The Orlando Sports Foundation, FieldTurf, Advent Health, WESH TV, OUC and Addition Financial are proud to provide this recognition to these future leaders.

The admissions to the game benefit the Coaches Toy Drive Challenge, which is an annual drive to provide toys for children at Christmas, and the Orlando Sports Foundation.

    Sincerely,Mark LineCure Classic All-Stars GM

  • The Orlando Sports Foundation, Inc. was founded in May 2008 and is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising funding and awareness for organizations working to find a cure for cancer.

OSF’s signature event is the Cure Bowl, which is played annually in late December at Camping World Stadium. The nation’s 40th collegiate football bowl game was launched

in 2015 and featured the largest single donation ever made by a bowl game directly to a charitable cause.

To date, the Cure Bowl has been a platform to donate over $3.88 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). These donations have impacted the local Orlando community with Dr. Annette Khaled at the UCF College of Medicine receiving $1.2 million from BCRF.

We have built partnerships with sports media, fans and advocates, including individuals, corporations, foundations and families that have been directly impacted by cancer. Join FBC Mortgage, ESPN Events, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) and more as we give cancer its toughest opponent yet.

    TRADITION: FIELDTURF CURE CLASSIC ALL-STARS

The FieldTurf Cure Classic All-Stars Game had its origin as the Metro Conference All-Star Game. This was started by coaches David Langdon, Phil Ziglar and Jim Buckridge in 1993. According to Coach Langdon, they wanted to give the Orange County community something to be proud of in their schools and to allow the players one last opportunity to showcase their talents.

And it worked. Well over 100 players have received student-athlete scholarships to compete at the college level because of this game. Coach Kevin Barnett of Mars Hill University near Asheville, N.C., attends the All-Stars game each year, because he finds athletes that fit his program. Coach Barnett estimates that over 25 athletes have played at Mars Hill because of this game. This is one of the many success stories from the FieldTurf Cure Classic All-Stars Game.

Some of the players that have used the FieldTurf Cure Classic All-Stars Game as a platform for success at the next level:- Doug Gabriel - starred at UCF before playing seven NFL seasons.- Alex Hayes - played for Evens High School before becoming a running back at UCF.- Jason Jimenez - former UCF and NFL player.- Scotty Cunningham - current coach at Winter Park High School and played at Tennessee State and with the Tennessee Titans.

The FieldTurf Cure Classic All-Stars Game remained an Orange County Metro Conference event until 2016, when it became a challenge between Orange County and Seminole County.

This brings us to the question. Which athletes this year will be discovered by a college coach or go on to play pro football this year? The real story is in the players, and those coaches that train them, to compete at their highest level.

The Orlando Sports Foundation selected Andy Johnson for this honor at its fall Board of Directors meeting, because he represents all the qualities of a Community Soldier and is one of the reasons that the OSF works hard to fund research to help find a Cure for Cancer.

Johnson was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in March of 2019. He, along with his family, decided to battle the disease with a regimen of 12 chemo treatments. That’s when the challenges began. It took away his energy and “left his hands numb and his feet felt like they were in ice water.”

But he never turned his back on his team or coaches at Boone High School. He continued to be on the field daily, using a golf cart to motor around the practice field. At games, he was there coaching, even when his equilibrium and sturdiness were challenged. All the student-athletes rallied around his battle with cancer and the way he “soldiered on” through difficult times.

His courage was an inspiration to his coaches, who supported Coach Johnson and allowed him to do what he loves best. “Coach his boys.”

Andy Johnson was the Orange Cure Classic All-Star Head Coach in 2017 and 2018. His experience with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma has made him

a strong advocate for Cancer Research and a full partner with the Orlando Sports Foundation in its efforts to raise money for this Cause.

Thanks to Waterboy Sports for sharing its hydration equip-ment with the Cure Classic.

  • From 1989 to 2015, breast cancer mortality has decreased by 39 percent due to improved breast cancer treatment and early detection.

Breast cancer has been around for decades, but it does not have to be our future. OUC is proud to support the AutoNation Cure Bowl

for raising awareness to help fight breast cancer.
