Overview of ELA• In Grade 5, students refine and master

previously learned knowledge and skills in increasingly complex presentations, reading selections, and written compositions.

• Fifth grade students can identify a speaker's persuasive technique such as promises, dares, and flattery in presentations.

• Students read from classic and contemporary selections and informational text.

• Fifth grade students are able to judge the internal consistency or logic of stories and texts.

• Students recognize the way an author organizes information and engage in more sophisticated analysis of characters, plots, and settings.

Reading Log• Your child has a Reading Log. Each

night your child should read a minimum of 20 minutes.

• They need to document on their Reading Log: the title of the material, number of minutes read, and a parent’s signature. The log will be checked by the ELA teacher at least once a week.

Objectives we will cover in Social Studies:

Map skills, 13 Original Colonies, American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, War of 1812, Western movement/Gold Rush, Civil War, Industrial Revolution, WWI- WWII, Citizenship

Objectives we will cover in Math:

Patterns & functions, computation, problem solving, graphs, decimals, geometry, probability & statistics

Objectives we will cover in Science:

• Matter & its Properties• Forms & Uses of Energy• Earth, Moon, & Sun• Weather & Climate• Ecosystems• Natural Resources

Homework• Homework is assigned Monday –

Thursday nights and occasionally on weekends.

• If your child completes homework less than 80% of the time in a nine weeks period = N on the report card.

STAAR tests• STAAR testing: In order to be

promoted to 6th grade, your child must pass both the reading and math sections of the state STAAR test.

• Math test: April 1, 2014• Reading test: April 2, 2014• Science test: April 23, 2014

Communication• As a form of Teacher-Parent

communication, your child writes homework in his /her agenda. If there is no homework for the night from a teacher, your child will write, “No homework” or “None.” We ask that you initial the agenda nightly. By doing so, we know you are aware of the night’s homework.

Communication• Graded work will be sent home in

your child’s binder.

• Conduct marks (if any) will be written in the agenda.

Dress Code• Shorts should be mid-thigh in length.• Tummies and backs should be

covered.• Pants should fit at the waist & should

be worn with a belt.• Flip-flop shoes are not allowed.• Athletic shoes should be worn to

school everyday.

In an effort to increase our security at LCE and for the protection of our students and faculty, effective Monday, September 23, 2013 parents and guardians will no longer be allowed to walk students to their classrooms. If you need to speak to your student’s teacher, please email for an appointment. Thank you for helping LCE to be a safe and secure school.

A Note from Administration

•The first bell rings at 7:50 a.m. Please make certain your child is in his/her classroom by 8:10 a.m. or he/she will be counted tardy. After five tardies, the student will not receive a perfect attendance award.

•E-mailing teachers is OK; however, please be aware that if you need to change your child’s transportation, or need an immediate answer, please call the office.

•Our planning time is 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. Please schedule ahead of time if conference is needed.

Other Reminders• If you are planning a party (birthday,

holiday or other) for your child, and you plan on passing out invitations to a party, please make sure every child in the class gets one. If everyone in the class is not being invited, please mail the invitations so there are no hurt feelings.

• For birthday celebrations, you may send cupcakes or preferably cookies with napkins. These will be passed out by the teacher in the classroom after lunch.

• When coming to enjoy lunch with your child, please know that this is your time with your child; other children may not sit with you at the visitors’ table.
