How to make the most of uni life

• Take time out to meet people, join a club and enjoy university events throughout the year.

• Plan the year, work hard and achieve your dream.

• Involve your parents/friends /advisors in the year.

Student Workloads

• The Monash IT Faculty guideline advises you to allow 12 hours a week for each unit

• Typically a students load per unit is;• Lectures, 2 hours a week• Tutorials & Laboratories, 1 to 2 hours a week• Assignments, allow 3 hours a week• Private study time, another 2 to 3 hours a week• Revision, 2 to 3 hours a week minimum

• Full-time load for one semester is:• 4 x 6 points = 24 points per semester• This means 48 hours per week!

Lectures

Objectives:• To set the unit outline and introduce you to the unit.• To explain difficult concepts.• To demonstrate application of concepts with worked

examples and case studies.• To provide information about the unit assessment.

TutorialsObjectives:• To reinforce concepts introduced in lectures.• To apply and practice knowledge gained.• To give students an opportunity to ask questions.• To prepare for assignments and exams.• To meet other students taking the unit.

Note:• Tutorials do not start until Week 2 in most units.• Tutors are available for consultation.• Some computer labs are open after-hours.

Assessment

• Assessment may include: tutorial performance, class tests, assignments and final exam.

• The type of assessment used and the proportion of the final mark it represents varies for each unit.

• Supplementary or additional assessment may be available under special circumstances.

Unsatisfactory Academic ProgressAs a student, your primary responsibility is to progress through your studies to a satisfactory standard. This does NOT mean that you have to pass every unit that you have enrolled in.

In the Faculty of Information Technology, your progress is deemed unsatisfactory if you have: • Passed less than 50% of enrolled credit points over the academic year; or • Failed the same compulsory unit twice; or • Failed to comply with any terms or conditions imposed by an Academic Progress Committee of the

Faculty.

If you have not progressed to a satisfactory standard, then the Faculty MAY decide to exclude you.However, exclusion is NOT automatic. In many cases students are given opportunities to continue their studies and are provided with support.

It is highly recommended that students familiarise themselves with UnsatisfactoryAcademic Progress and the Faculty's Early Warning strategies for identifying students at risk. Further information is available at the following url:

Student Rights and ResponsibilitiesRights and Responsibilities• Students and staff at Monash University have a number of rights, including the right to be treated with

and the right to feedback on your work.

Responsibilities• “Codes of Practice for Teaching and Learning” sets out the responsibilities of students and staff. • Staff responsibilities include treating students with respect and equitably, providing quality learning

opportunities, being available for student consultation, and to provide timely and constructive feedback.

Your responsibilities as a student include:• To apply yourself to your studies to the best of your abilities.• To attend lectures, tutes, and pracs.• To hand in assignments and prac work on time.• To inform us about any problems that may affect your performance.• Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and be independent learners. • To submit original work for assessment without plagiarising or cheating
