Presentation Notes
The new Masters in Nursing and Social work has work placements, similarly to the other professional healthcare courses. An example of this are placements working with children needing social input when leaving hospital care. There are also two intakes per year for nursing course, these are in March and September.

Which Field of Nursing?

ADULT NURSING (age 16-116!)

CHILDRENS NURSING (age 0-16+)

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING (all ages)

LEARNING DISABILITY NURSING(all ages)

It is vital that applicants know which field of nursing they wish to study.

Presentation Notes
It is recommended that prospective students gain as much experience/understanding of the different strands of nursing before they apply to ensure that they are sure of the course that they want to study. Many students apply for Midwifery as they have an interest in working with babies. It is worth noting that the Midwifery course, and the profession, have very little involvement working with babies and is more focused on working with pregnant adults.

Overview of Pre-Registration Courses

• All pre-registration nursing/ODP programmes are three years long. Paramedic Diploma 2 years/Top up Degree available

• Courses have a timetable of 45 weeks per year - annual leave is predetermined.

• All courses comprise of aprox 50% theory and 50% practice.• ODP 40% theory 60% practice

• Students expected to attend university and placement areas for a 37.5 hour week.

• Experience all shift patterns.

• It is important that they understand this and are committed to the longer than normal terms.

edgehill.ac.uk

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As the annual leave for the programmes are pre-determined, students are not generally permitted to take holidays outside of the set dates. With the courses having a 50/50 split between theory and practice it is important that students give the same effort to the two aspects of the course. Therefore, if students are not timetabled to be in university or on placement, they should engage in directed study. The course is tough-going and intense as students gain both a degree and a professional qualification. Theoretical work that students must complete includes exams, essays, annotated bibliographies. Students must experience all shift patterns through their placements. These include: nights, lates, weekends and bank holidays. It is important that students are aware of this before they apply for the courses. Furthermore

Practice PlacementsCentral to the programme is the experience students gain working with professionals in a variety of settings, including:• Acute hospitals • Community settings • Clinics • Walk-in-centres• GP surgeries • Nursing homes • Nurseries

Hub and spoke placements to give maximum opportunity to experience a variety of care delivery.

edgehill.ac.uk

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In order to comply with NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) students must have exposure to lots of placement types. Hub are 8-12 week placements and spoke are shorter specialist placements.

International Practice Placements

• Students are given the opportunity to experience international health care at the end of 2nd

year.

• They can request the area they want to work in.

• Previous Edge Hill University students have used this time to gain work experience in Africa, Australia, America, New Zealand, China and Europe.

• The Faculty has links with China, Finland, South Africa, Rwanda, Germany.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Staff really try to push the international practice placements. Previously, Erasmus money has allowed students to go to Finland and this year some staff and students are going to China. At least 4 weeks placement are expected. They are self-funded and holidays can be tagged on to the end of the placements which a lot of students choose to do. (The placements don’t have to be nursing but just in a relevant health related setting.)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Maths equivalency qualifications are not accepted for the Nursing and Social Work Masters programme. Q: Why do EHU ask for science GCSE for Midwifery but not for Nursing courses? A: The reason for this is that the Midwifery course has overall stricter entry criteria than the Nursing courses. For example, the Midwifery course requires recent study within a maximum of 3 years, whereas Nursing asks for recent study within a maximum of 5 years. Furthermore, the Midwifery course has a greater focus on the biology side and this is also reflected in the requirements within the access course for Midwifery for Biology or Human Biology to be a component. Q: Does EHU accept health and social care extended BTEC for Midwifery? A: Yes. EHU accept 3 A-levels or equivalent qualifications, including health and social care extended BTEC. Q: Do many year 13s progress to Midwifery straight from school/college? A: Some students are accepted straight from school/college for this course, however their level of work/voluntary experience relevant to the course is important. Many successful applicants are older students who have gained a breadth of experience through work experience after they finished school/college.

Application

Points to remember on the application form:

• All information on the form is confidential.

• Explain any breaks in employment or full-time education.

• Declare any known learning need - there is a lot of support available to assist with studies if we know about their learning needs.

• Declare any convictions - each declaration is considered individually and not all convictions are prohibitive to these programmes.

• Make sure the people nominated as referees are willing to supply a reference.

Presentation Notes
It is important that prospective students declare any known learning needs that they have so that they can be allocated the appropriate time for English/Maths tests at interview stage. Students should explain breaks in education or employment on their application so that EHU can see what their journey has been and what they have done.

Application

All pre registration programmes are competitive, especially children’s nursing, midwifery and paramedic practice.

Application forms can be strengthened by:

- finding out more about the profession - undertake some paid/voluntary work - be clear about which area they want to

study and WHY

Take time completing the personal statement.

edgehill.ac.uk

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The most recent intake of students onto Nursing courses (March 2017) was very competitive as it was the last intake of students who are eligible for government funding. Generally pre-registration courses are very competitive anyway with at least 800 applications for some courses, with most only having between 20-100 available places. The interview for Paramedic Practice has exercise based elements and is therefore not only a one-on-one interview. These include running up and down stairs carrying weight. Q: What is considered first when looking at applicants? A: UCAS points and personal statements are the first point of call. Then if an applicant is successful they will be invited to interview where they will have to take maths and English tests. For some courses such as Midwifery tests will be marked there and then and students who fail will not progress further and those who pass will continue on. There are opportunities to practice these tests as example questions are sent out to students. It is really important that students know what the job that they are applying for involves. Research/experience of the role is key to being successful in your personal statement and interview. If students apply for two different nursing courses e.g. Learning Disabilities and Mental Health, they will usually only be put through one interview process doe the two courses.

It is acknowledged that it is more difficult to gain experience with children however, local trusts now have more voluntary work opportunities available e.g. Alder Hey have opportunities to do jigsaws/play games with children which is a good way to gain relevant experience.
