FROM THE PRIESTRecognition.Everybody loves to be recognized and remembered in some fashion. So, why wasn't Jesus recognized by everyone when He was born? In John's Gospel, we read that when Jesus came into the world, the world "knew him not" and His own people "received him not" (John 1:10-11).Jesus was born in anonymity – only shepherds recognized Him and foreigners who were the Wise Men! They probably read some Messianic prophecies and were excited to hear the Messiah appear! God led them by a star across the desert to Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The Wise Men left everything that was comfortable for them in search of the Messiah King. In their search, they found Jesus Christ, the Light and Wisdom of God!God gives to us the same light of revelation to accept Jesus as our Lord and Messiah! With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can open our mind and hearts so we can understand the truth which God revealed through Jesus Christ! To know Jesus Christ is to know God on a personal level, and through the encounter of the Wise Men, we see in God's plan that Jesus is not just for the Jewish people, but for all the nations as well! Jesus came that all of us might find true peace with God!!!May we bring the light of Jesus Christ to others through the witness of our own lives!• Pray for those who lead the Church, especially Pope Francis

and Bishop Brennan• Pray for those affected by natural disasters and acts of violence

(COVID-19; violence due to racism; earthquake in Croatia; avalanche in Iran)

• A HUGE THANK-YOU to all who assisted and made Christmas such a wonderful celebration!

• St. Mary Parish Council and Finance Council held their monthly meetings. Minutes of these meetings will be in your bulletin next weekend.

• Tomorrow (January 4th) will be the First Day of School for St. Mary's. The 6th-8th graders will be moving into the new middle school located at 630 S. 3rd Street! We are excited and we pray for a safe day!

– P. Vince

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 3, 2021The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2021

LESSONS FROM THE EPIPHANYReflection on Matthew 2:1-12

In their search for the “newborn King of the Jews,” the “magi from the east” in Matthew’s story are expert stargazers. Reading the signs in the heavens, written by God, these Gentiles embark on an uncertain journey to encounter the surprise to which God is leading them. Surprise, indeed! A King, who is a simple baby, not living in a palace, but residing in a humble dwelling.

There are so many lessons, insights, spiritual truths and treasures presented in the Epiphany story! By what light is Jesus revealed to you? Where has your journey taken you? What treasures do you place in the service of Christ? Do you recognize Christ in His humble dwelling place, especially in the poor and vulnerable?

Epiphany also reveals the universal nature of God’s plan. Isaiah envisions all the nations streaming to Jerusalem, God’s holy city. Paul affirms that the revelation of God’s grace in Christ is meant for the Gentiles, who are “coheirs” and “copartners” with the Jews in Christ’s promise. The Psalmist echoes this theme: “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” More treasure to contemplate: How do you affirm and further the inclusivity of God’s plan?

SAINT GENEVIEVEFeast Day: January 3 • Patron Saint of Disasters

Represented in art as a shepherdess because of her protective spirit, Genevieve prophesied dramatic events in Paris, from military invasions to natural disasters, and shielded the city through prayer. It was believed that she could read the consciences of those around her and offer peace to those possessed by the devil. When the Franks attacked the famous French city, Genevieve strove to get food to those in need and arranged for a network of prayers to be said for protection. In 1129, over six hundred years after she died, her relics were transported through Paris, and many believed the event ended an epidemic of disease at the time.

Shepherdess of Paris and imploring protector, Please use your petitions to defend against catastrophe.

Shield us from natural and man-made disasters Through the glory of your words to God. Keep us safe from all that could harm us

In the scope of Heaven and Hell. Pray for the safety of the masses in the name of the Lord.

Amen. Philip Lief Group, Inc. (2004). Saintly Advice: A Prayer for Every Problem.
