painting, blow up slides, a jumping castle and of course fairy floss! A good cup of Coffee is always close by, so sit and watch the passing crowd, marvel at the Stilt Walkers, admire the Belly Dancers, or be inspired by the Zumba crew or just listen to the easy jazz and pop music played on every corner.

Those teenagers are not forgotten either. They can get a thrill on the GIANT slide, the Mad Cow, or maybe a Helicopter ride would be a special treat? Now that IS thrilling!

Where ever you stroll you will have a great choice of cuisine – German, French, Australian, Italian, Thai, seafood and nibbles while you wait – but be early!

There’s plenty of free car parking - bring the caravan if you prefer and stay overnight at the Pony Club grounds for just $20-00 and all the entertainment is free too! AND there’s more! Just buy one raffle ticket for $2-00 or 3 for $5-00 in the guessing competition and you can win the prize of a lifetime!

The Denman main street is closed to traffic for the day so it’s a safe, friendly place to bring the family. Rain, hail or shine, the welcome will be warm. Come and have some fun and spend the day in Denman with us, here in the Muswellbrook Shire. I’m sure you’ll want to come back again.

The full rodeo program will be complimented by a feature miniature bucking pony showcase.

On Sunday, a jackpot junior rodeo will be run for the first time where tomorrow’s legends will have the opportunity to brush up on their skills.

All this and more will be seen at the event next Saturday, May 12 from 1pm.

The main rodeo action will kick of at 5.30pm with live entertainment by DJ Barry following the rodeo action.

Merriwa Springtime Show 2012

Marching shoulder to shoulder with people who had never marched before, Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders joined the NSW Farmers Association and over twenty other organisations representing concerned farming communities, citizens, water and environmental groups. This included the Country Womens’ Association, who in their 90 year history had never before taken to the streets.

“The eight thousand strong rally today highlighted the depth of feeling throughout our rural and city communities for the protection of our vital water and land resources and important rural industries.” Andrew Wiles, Vice President Hunter Thoroughbred

Breeders said.

Rally participants today sent a strong, resounding and personal message to the

NSW Government - protect our land and water.

And the commitment from the Deputy Premier was clear. “The message I want to leave you all with today is this: if any proposed mining or gas extraction activity is likely to harm our prime agricultural land or other important rural industry clusters or the water resources associated with those areas, it will not go ahead under this government.”

“The Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders congratulate everyone involved in the rally today. We also congratulate the Deputy Premier who had the courage of his convictions to address the rally. We expect the Government to deliver on this promise.” Andrew Wiles, Vice President Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders said.

This year’s Merriwa Springtime Show will take full advantage of the new cattleyards at Merriwa Showground. The Show will be held on the weekend of September 15 and 16, with campdrafting on the Friday evening.

Show president Rob Tindall has more than 40 years’ experience in showing cattle.

“We’re running a couple of new classes in the stud beef cattle section, including an unled Herefords feature show. To my knowledge Herefords have not been a feature of Merriwa Show for many years,” he said on Friday.

Mr Tindall said the trend, particularly in country Shows, was away from led cattle because of the inconvenience and expense to the owner.

Unled classes gave exhibitors the opportunity to show their cattle and expose them to crowds and noise at the same time, he said.

“At Merriwa Show, what you see is what you get. People have had too many bad experiences with overfed bulls from major shows and sales.”

“I definitely want to see Merriwa Show prosper. That’s why I took on the 2011 project of renewing the cattle yards.

“Now the project seems to have grown, to renewing the whole complex.

“I can just picture Merriwa Showground in

10 years’ time - it has so much potential, that excites me.”

Heavy horses and vintage farm machinery are two other attractions being reintroduced to the 2012 Merriwa Show. Mr Tindall said that, in this Australian Year of the Farmer, it was appropriate that some of the history of life on the land be revisited.

“Young women aged 18 and over are invited to enter our Miss Showgirl contest, which always adds a touch of glamour to the Show. The entrants will ride around the Showground arena as a focal point of the Grand Parade, before the official opening on Saturday afternoon.

“And they’ll also be guests of honour at our Merriwa Show Ball, to be held at the School of Arts a couple of weeks before the Show.”

Horse Festival CommencesWell the Festival is here once again and excitement is building. The King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge will be held from this Friday to Sunday at Murrurundi. What a great way to start a festival of the horse – to reminisce over the old ways of the bush with a stockman’s challenge and a bush festival. The main challenges will take place over Friday and Saturday with some of the best mountain horsemen and women in Australia competing for the title of ‘King of the Ranges’ There will also be buck jumping, sulky driving, whip cracking and the ever popular dog high jump. Don’t forget the children’s goat races! It is such an opportunity for the community to get together to celebrate all things wonderful in the bush.

I wonder what ‘Thunderbolt’ and his fellow bushrangers would have thought about having a ‘’Festival of the Horse’ in this region. Since most of those outside the law at the time stole the only fast racehorses in the region the local law enforce officers had no hope of catching these wild bushmen. To top it all off we will have a concert featuring the poets who put all these exploits from these bushrangers from pen to paper.

What an appropriate follow up to this in the form of “The Ballads of the Bush’ Concert on Mother’s Day at Scone Race Course. Everyone is encouraged to come and listen to tenors from the Australian Opera company perform songs and poetry from our great

poets – Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson and CJ Dennis. This is another opportunity for everyone in the community to come together to celebrate our wonderful cultural heritage. Tickets are available from Serendipity and the Scone Visitor Information Cen

There are some changes to note this year during the festival – The Scone Grammar Antiques Fair will be held in the multipurpose room at the Grammar School in Hill Street this year. The Jack Johnson Memorial Day has moved to Tuesday 15th May at White Park and there will be a special Racehorse Retraining Programme on display at White Park from 10am to 1pm on Thursday 17th May.

NSW FarmDay 2012New South Wales farmers are being encouraged to respond to the demand from city families to know more about life on the land by opening up their gates for FarmDay 2012.FarmDay founder Deb Bain says it’s inspiring to know that so many people from the city want to connect with rural Australia and is urging farmers to make the most of the opportunity presented by FarmDay when it comes on May 26/27 and to register now.

“This interest is so exciting. Families from urban areas quite clearly want to know more about what’s happening on the land,” Mrs Bain said.

“We want to take this enthusiasm and show city families the significant contribution

farmers make to their lives. If you’re a farmer wanting to showcase the opportunities and challenges you face in your business of producing Australia’s food and fibre, then FarmDay is a great way to share your story.”

Booligal cattle and sheep farmers, Sandra and Matt Ireson who have signed up for FarmDay for the third time says FarmDay is more than just about having fun and learning, it can be beneficial for a whole range of reasons.

“City families get to see the variety of a farmer’s lifestyle and the way we handle challenges that are a part and parcel of being involved in the agricultural world,” Sandra said.

“From overcoming drought to managing the feelings of isolation that can sometimes occur when you live remotely, the families

who visit gain a true understanding of who farmers really are!”

Sandra says FarmDay is a worth-while event to have on the calendar.

“It’s always a busy time when you’re a farmer, but FarmDay is just for one day and it gives people from the bush a chance to really teach city people about what happens on the land,” Sandra said.

“It’s very easy to register and the FarmDay team does a great job at matching the city family with a farm – it was interesting to learn about our city guests too.”

Further information and registrations details are available at: www.farmday.com.au.

FarmDay is a not-for profit organisation proudly supported by Meat & Livestock Australia.

As children they loved music, playing it, listening to it and dancing to it so it was only natural that the Dennis family from Antiene formed a band. The siblings along with a family friend have been playing music together for decades, however in 2006 they decided to get a little more serious and officially formed The Dennis Boys Band.

The five piece band is made up of guitarists and vocalists Shane Dennis and Lyle Dennis, bass player Erle Dennis, vocalist Leah Dennis and drummer David Burke.

The local band writes and plays their own original music and take great pride in performing it in pubs across NSW, especially locally in the Upper Hunter.

After producing a three song self titled EP in 2008, the band recorded their first album ‘No Story To Tell’ in 2010.

All former students of Muswellbrook High School, The Dennis Boys Band predominantly plays jazz, blues, pop and folk with their early influence of country always shining through.

The band will be on show at the Grand Junction Hotel in Maitland on May 11, the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel in Newcastle on May 19, before returning to the Muswellbrook Workers Club for a hometown gig on July 6.

While touring the countryside playing in pubs, clubs and at festivals, The Dennis Boys Band are applying the final touches to their next album to be released later this year.
