Tips for the Three Umpire System

Keep the 4 elements in front of you and never turn your back to the play

Anticipate at which base the play will be then move Hustle to the position to make the call Be prepared to assist your partner General Rule

Tips for the Three Umpire System

Always keep your eye on the ball Avoid being hit with a thrown ball Let the ball turn you into the play Base umpires watch for lead offs

On all Fly Balls to Outfield a base umpire goes out to make the call.

If you Deviate - Communicate



Starting Position Plate Umpire

1’ off the line and 15’ up the line from home plate Alternate sides between inningsFollow the catcher

Sweep the plate after warm-up pitches

Hustle to your position behind the catcher



Starting PositionBase Umpires

Umpire nearest the rubber sweeps the pitcher’s rubber at the end of each inning and before the pitcher takes his or her warm up pitches

BUs start 1’ off of line

When the inning starts take positions 15’-18’ beyond 1st and 3rd bases and 1’-3’ in foul territory



No Runners Ball Hit to Infield

Move 1 – 2 steps into fair territory

Hustle towards 2nd base avoiding infielders

Trail the runner one third of the way to 1st baseMove to position for call at 3rd base if necessary

No Runners Ball Hit to Outfield-no ump out-

Hustle to infield for play on BR at 1st

Move to position for call at 3rd base if necessary

PU goes to 3rd base cover home 3rd base extend is optional for throws from right field



R1 Ball Hit to Infield

12 – 15 ft beyond 1st base

Move a couple of steps towards 2nd base staying outside base path

U320’ from the 2nd base in line with 2nd & 3rd

Trail the runner one third of the way to 1st baseMove to position for call at 3rd base if necessary

Plate Umpire

If PU goes to 3rd base cover home

Move 1 – 2 steps into fair territory



R1 Ball Hit to Outfield -no ump out-

Hustle to infield for play on BR at 1st

U3Hustle inside diamond to take all runners at 2nd base

Plate UmpireTrail the runner one third of the way to 1st baseMove to position for call at 3rd base

If PU goes to 3rd base cover home

Take BR at 1st if U1 rotates to plate

3rd base extend is optional for throws from right




Move towards first play at 2nd or 1st

Move a couple of steps into fair territory for call at 3rd

Behind F4 and clear of any movement by F4

PU move left of plate and watch BR to 1st

- go to hold- be prepared to go

to plate or to 3rd for call




Coverage:U3 out to make call- catch, fair, foul

U1 move in diamond- responsible for tag

up on R2- all calls at 1st and

2nd.- take BR into 3rd

PU to hold position-be ready to move to plate or 3rd to assist



Umpire Going Out R2 R3 U1 OUT on Fly Balls to Outfield

Coverage:U1 out to make call

U3 move in diamond- tag-up on R2- if caught ball take R2

into 3rd

- if not caught make calls on BR at 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

PU move left and watch BR to 1st

-go to hold -watch tag up on R3




U3 out to make call

U1 in diamond – tag-up on R2 and BR at 1st and 2nd.

PU –move left and watch BR to 1st

-tag-up on R3- to hold and be ready to go home or to 3rd.
