Jean Côté - SKHS Director

As the School continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, all staff and faculty members are contributing their considerable energies to maintaining our stellar learning environment for students, both in the classroom and beyond. Several initiatives are underway to ensure we maintain what we perceive to be the flagship of all degrees in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies – Competent, Enthusiastic and Thriving Citizens.

I wish you all a successful and fulfilling 2015.

THE VOICE OF ERGONOMICS IN CANADA

The following is being sent to ACE Ontario members on behalf of the ACE Ontario Council.

Thank you to all the students who submitted an entry to the ACE Ontario Student competition this year. The topic of the competition

was “What recent advancements in technology have enhanced ergonomic assessments?” After careful deliberation amongst ACE OC

executive members, 1st place goes to Peter Sheahan [KIN ‘14] of Queen’s University, with Greg Smith [PHE ‘13] also from Queen’s

University in 2nd place. Peter and Greg have won $500 and $300 dollars, respectively with their submission. As a 3rd place finisher could

not be reached, the 3rd place award will not be presented.

Congratulations to Peter Sheahan and Greg Smith. Your submissions illustrated how computer modeling of the human body and

movement has changed the landscape of human factors in design today and in the future.

Thank you again to all the participants. We look forward to seeing your submissions again at the next ACE Ontario Student Competition.

Ergonomics Design Competition

Sponsored by Auburn Engineers, Inc., the Ergonomics Design Competition for Student Teams provides an ideal opportunity for student to assess, design, and present their solutions to a challenging problem in ergonomics. In the 2013 competition, the Queen’s Admirals, supervised by Dr. Steven Fischer were the sole Canadian representatives competing against 35 other teams from across the USA. The team just missed out on the top five, receiving an Honorable Mention Award and a $100 cash prize to each student team member. If you want to represent Queen’s in the 2014 completion, please contact Dr. Steven Fischer before September 1, 2014.

10

Welcome Back BBQ

The HLTH DSC held their annual Welcome Back BBQ on September 17th, a chance for Health Studies students to greet the incoming Class of 2017

and have some fun together!

Voting closed SEPT 19th for empty positions on PHEKSA and

for the incoming first-year reps.

11

Students in KNPE 355, Clinical Fitness Assessment Laboratory, were busy in the second week learning how to measure blood pressure.

PHEKSA’s Better Equipment Fund

Students are benefitting from the new charging stations set up in the UG Lounge

and in the second-floor lobby provided through PHEKSA’s Better Equipment Fund.

Thanks to all the students who

support this fund!

12

Many thanks to the KIN and PHE students who travelled to the Ontario

University Fair, September 19-21.

Reports are that 130,000 people attended this three-day event, so our students were kept busy answering

questions about what it is like to study KIN and PHE at Queen’s!

13

PHEKSA held their first clothing sales at the end of Sept. and were kept busy with lots of orders for PHE and KIN clothing!

14

A warm welcome to new faculty member Jeffrey Masuda!

A human geographer trained in the sub-discipline of health geography as well as the interdisciplinary fields of health promotion and population health, he brings a wealth of experience to the SKHS. His research draws on critical theory and employs a community-based participatory research approach, using mixed methods to investigate the systemic roots of social and environmental injustice. His scholarly contributions include insights into arts-based methodologies, neighbourhood-level health inequities, environmental governance; knowledge translation, systematic review, and social theory in geography. Current projects focus on equity focused knowledge translation, human rights and place, and First Nations community health. Contact information.

“There is a welcome mat on my door for any students who have interests in the area of health promotion, environmental health, or marginalized populations/health inequity.”

Jeff Masuda

We also have the joy of welcoming the youngest member of the SKHS family… congratulations!!

15

Students Gaining Awareness An Example of Experiential Learning

Students in KNPE 333, Physical Activity for Persons with a Disability, are completing an assignment that involves spending a day in a wheelchair. Each student is required to complete all the tasks of a typical day while using a wheelchair. Along with seeing the world from a different perspective, that is, seated versus standing, the students are discovering things about their environment that they never paid attention to before. Hopefully, by the end of their experience they will be more aware of the many environmental barriers within our community that can limit the inclusion of persons who use wheelchairs. From experience comes better understanding, increased awareness, and perhaps, future action to help reduce or eliminate those barriers.

Students in HLTH 205 (Health Promotion) listen intently to Dr. Steve Fergus

as he lectures on “Goals vs Questions vs Objectives”.

16

The HLTH DSC were busy in the week leading up to the Thanksgiving weekend with

clothing sales.

As Thanksgiving approached, students were busy on assignments and preparing for mid-terms.

HLTH, KIN and PHE students took advantage of the "How to study for Anatomy"

workshop given by Queen's Learning Strategies on October 17.

17

PHEKSA welcomed back PHE and KIN alumni last weekend with a “pre-game” breakfast spread and tour of the SKHS building. Thanks to all who made it such a great experience!

18

On October 26th, HLTH, KIN and PHE students had an opportunity to ask

questions about careers in Occupational Therapy, how to get

involved in the profession and how to apply for a Master’s program.

Many thanks to the School of

Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen's who sent over a professional

representative and a current student to speak to SKHS students - they were

kept busy!

2014 Academic All-Stars

Congratulations to the 36 HLTH, KIN and PHE athletes who were among the 328 varsity athletes honoured at

the 2014 Academic All-Star Reception for students achieving an 80% (3.5 GPA) or above while competing

on a varsity team or varsity club.

The ceremonies (which included a full breakfast)

were held in Grant Hall on October 28th – it’s a good thing these athletes are used to early mornings

19

Abigail was a little nervous about her first day in the program! She was glad to have the support of her

father, Professor Steve Fischer.

Fall Preview, SAT OCT 25 Campus was busy as prospective students came to Fall Preview last weekend. Many thanks to all the HLTH, KIN and PHE students who gave up valuable free time to answer questions about their programs & life at Queen’s, as well as giving demos!

20

Week 9 of Fall Term saw more fundraising for WAG (Winter Adapted Games) and ticket sales for PHEKSA's semi-formal.

Pizza with Profs PHE and KIN students enjoyed hot pizza

with their profs last Tuesday.

Thanks PHEKSA!

Peter Sheahan KIN ’14 and MSc Candidate in ergonomics in the School of Kinesiology and Health

Studies is the recipient of the 2014 Best Poster Award conferred at the Ontario Kinesiology Association

Conference held in Niagara Falls on 08 Nov 2014. Mr. Sheahan's graduate supervisor, Dr. Steve Fischer, notes that: "Peter did a fantastic job sharing his

research with Kinesiology

On November 7th, WAG volunteers finished a week of bake sales to raise funds for this year’s

Winter Adapted Games with a skip-a-thon!

Well done!!

22

It's always great to hear from alumni - but, do we believe these three graduates from the Class

of 2014 when they say that they can't wait to get back to a Canadian winter? Somehow

traveling across Portugal and Spain (working as they go) seems a much better prospect!

PHE and KIN students merchandise has arrived in mid-Novemberwith more than 1,000 individual articles ordered! We saw a lot of students in their new items of clothing in the following weeks!

23

The Health Studies Departmental Student Council sponsored "Sculpt & Tone" at the ARC

on November 18th. Looking good!

Martha's Table, whose mission is to provide a caring place where people in need can have a

nutritious meal and find the social support of a community of friends and volunteers, had some help on November 19th from the HLTH DSC.

24

HLTH 415, Program Design and Evaluation, is being held this year in one of the three new teaching and learning classrooms in Ellis Hall which were designed for active and collaborative learning

25

KIN and PHE students held their annual semi-formal at the Olympic Harbour on November 22nd. "It was a rocking success again this year, as we had record setting

attendance. There was a delicious dinner and great music - an amazing night to relax, and put away the books before the crunch time of exam season begins."

26

On Thursday November 25, some members of the Queen’s Varsity Football team did a fundraiser where they had their hair cut for cancer and donated their locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Shown below is Jesse Topley (KIN ’16) taking his turn – looking good!
