2014 CSI GREAT LAKES REGION CONFERENCE Indianapolis, Indiana

WELCOME TO THE 2014 CSI GREAT LAKES REGION CONFERENCE

David Young, AIA, CSI

Indianapolis Chapter CSI President

On behalf of the Indianapolis Chapter it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 Great Lakes Region Conference -- an excellent opportunity for learning and growth combined with the benefit of networking with the leadership and members of our sister chapters. Our planning committee has worked months to develop programs and events that continue our region's long history of outstanding conferences.

We trust that you will find the NCAA venue inspiring, but beyond the meetings, please get out and experience the museums, sports, cultural and historical sites, arts, restaurants, and entertainment only a short walk away.

Please join us for our monthly chapter dinner meeting on Thursday evening, which will combine a program on the recent NCAA Headquarters addition with the chance to experience Hoosier hospitality on an intimate level.

It is our goal that you leave enriched both personally and professionally, having learned much with new tools for the future and with memories of great event.

Ivette R. Bruns CSI, CCS

Great Lakes Region CSI President

As I begin my year as President of the Great Lakes Region I am happy to see old friends and colleagues and to create new relationships throughout the region. We share common interests and unique experiences. It is wonderful to have this opportunity to share and discuss ideas to strengthen our impact in this part of the country.

My goal is to share information and to discuss common challenges to strengthen our CSI relationships and improve the design and construction industry in our Region. I look for your help in this endeavor. I will be sending out newsletters every month and will feature a Great Lakes Region chapter in each newsletter and I'm always interested to hear your goals and concerns to help improve our Chapters.

Welcome to Indianapolis. Together, let’s make this region Great.

From Design to Construction: NCAA Headquarters Addition

Jeff Milliken, AIA, LEED AP, Ratio Architects, Inc.

Jake Plummer, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Ratio Architects, Inc.

In 2012, Ratio completed an edition to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) headquarters in downtown Indianapolis. The NCAA had outgrown the original building, designed by internationally renowned architect Michael Graves, and needed to accommodate employee growth and additional on-site committee meetings. Ratio presented a design for new office and conference space uniquely innovative to NCAA operations and delivered a building with high performance, sustainable features.

The expansion’s initial design concepts explored ways to fit in with its current surroundings and compliment Grave’s original post-modern design. The final design highlights the NCAA’s role supporting the student/athlete while harmonizing with the adjacent state park’s open vistas and adjacent campus green space. The north elevation steps back to allow the NCAA Hall of Champions to be the prominent architectural expression, while the south elevation presents a new front door and public face for the NCAA office and meeting functions.

In order to find an exterior material that would support and complement the existing brick building without copying it, terra cotta tiles were used as a modern masonry application in the construction of the new building. The building also has sustainable features such as a green roof, daylight harvesting, and raised floor system.

How to Submit the Ultimate Substitution Request

David Proudfit, FCSI, CCS, Principal, Proudfit Associates

Who likes submitting their products for approval, especially when there is no guarantee that you'll be considered, or even reviewed?

This interactive, 90-minute panel discussion with two architects and a product rep/subcontractor will help you understand the substitution process, the why-where-when-how of making a request for approval of your products, what CSI forms are available, and where to find this information in the construction documents.

• Never need to make a substitution request again.

• Hear why architects don't want substitutions.

• Discover the rules of the game for a successful submittal.

• Make your request meet the needs of the project and requirements to be accepted.

The ADA Quiz

Steve Cain, AIA, CSI, CCS, CCCA, NCARB, President, SJC Architecture, Inc.

So you think you know the ADA? Even if you don't, please join the Indianapolis Chapter of CSI and test your knowledge of subjects related to accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The ADA has been around for over 20 years yet there is still much confusion and misinformation in the industry on exactly what the requirements are, when those requirements apply and even which document or standard should be referenced to find the answer.

With the primary enforcement of ADA being legal action brought by those who feel they have been discriminated against, facility owners and managers, architects, designers and construction professionals could all learn more about the details of the ADA and how to avoid its risks.

Learning Objectives:

• Develop a better understanding of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design

• Learn the differences between the various accessibility codes and standards and how to determine which

applies to your project.

• Study some of the common ADA mistakes made in the design and construction of buildings.

• Hear real world answers to accessibility questions on current projects.

THANK YOU TO THE COMMITTEE

The Indianapolis Chapter CSI would like to extend thanks to the organizing Committee that bring the 2014 CSI Great Lakes Region Conference to you.
