WHAT IS AUSDANCE?

Ausdance ACT is the peak body for dance in the ACT and part of the Ausdance National Network.Ausdance brings together professional dance companies, terti-ary dance course providers, freelance and community artists, traditional and recreational groups, studio teachers, researchers, administrators, dance therapists and members of the public.The Ausdance National Office is located in Canberra, and state branches service Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, the Northern Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and the ACT.Ausdance branches undertake projects and activities relevant to the dance sectors in their states, collectively covering the follow-ing National Priority Areas:

Dance• Community and Regional Dance• Education, Teacher Development and Services• Audience Development, Dance Profile / Marketing• International Links

Ausdance ACT MissionAusdance ACT’s mission is to take a leadership role in initiating, promoting and servicing dance as a vital, healthy and creative art form in the ACT.

Major Projects and ServicesAusdance ACT services and promotes dance through the follow-ing annual, major projects:

• Master School of Dance in January• Dance Week in May• Youth Dance Festival in September• Ausdance Skill Set for Teaching Dance

Ausdance ACT also provides a range of integrated services to the dance and broader community including:

• Marketing assistance to independent artists• Auspicing of grants• Independent and comprehensive referral service to the com-

munity on dance and related issues.

CODE OF ETHICS

The Code of Ethics was written by members of the dance training profession with Ausdance in response to concerns that all teachers, of whatever style of dance, should adhere to a common code of practice. It is an invaluable checklist for prospective students and their parents as to the professional integrity of a dance school or teachers.

Teachers may display this code in their studio premises. Others, in rented premises, may be unable to do so. It is advisable to ask teachers if they adhere to the following 12 principles:

1. Clearly defined aims will be stated by studio principals, setting out the broad goals to be achieved by the school. A similar set of objectives will be stated which outline the benefits a pupil can expect to receive through the teaching staff ’s conscientious implementation of those aims.

2. Studio principals will ensure that their school is capable of providing any services claimed.

3. Studio principals will employ teaching staff with experience, knowledge and qualifications required by the levels and techniques to be taught. Student teachers will be trained and supervised to ensure maintenance of the school’s teaching standards.

4. Studio principals will provide appropriate assessment procedures and will ensure that students and parents receive or have access to advice when necessary.

5. Studio principals will conform to sound business practice and provide an efficient fee system.

6. Studio principals and individual teachers will ensure that classes are of a size appropriate to the levels and techniques being taught. Students in each class will be of a compatible age and standard

7. Studio principals and individual teachers will ensure facilities provided conform with minimum safety and space requirements and have suitable flooring, with a safe surface designed and constructed to minimize the risk of injury.

8. Individual teachers will use adequate and flexible teaching skillsto create a productive learning environment. Individual teachers will: strive to communicate a love of dance; demonstrate professional attitudes, including punctuality, reliability and responsible care of students; encourage and support the individual in the class situation; and transmit general concepts of movement in addition to those of a particular style.

9. Individual teachers will recognise the role of dance in the development of a whole person. They will also seek to recognise and develop each student’s potential, whether it lies in dance or in related fields, and offer appropriate guidance for further progress.

10. Individual teachers will endeavor to recognise physical anomalies, modifying teaching and seeking medical advice where necessary. Teaching and choreography must be anatomically safe, and teachers must be prepared to deal with medical emergencies.

11. Individual teachers will strive to develop in the students an appreciation of the characteristic style of each specific technique taught.

12. Individual teachers will take responsibility for seeking further knowledge of all aspects of their work.
