Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels una- wares.(Hebrews 13:2) Hello parents and guardians, I hope all is well and I trust that you all had a restful and relaxing sum- mer. Welcome to September, the month of Hospitality. The virtue of hospitality calls us to show Hos- pitality when we welcome guests (including strangers and enemies) into our lives with kindness. Some- times hospitality requires that we cross boundaries and reduce some of the barriers established in our society to keep "the other" out because we believe in the ultimate dignity of every living being. May we all learn to be kind and respectful of each other as we begin a new school year. I also encourage everyone to be patient as we learn to understand the expectations of new classmates, teachers and families. Offer a hand of help, support and friendship to anyone that needs it and greet those that you meet with a smile. Remember, do to others what you expect them to do to you. All the very best and Gods blessing to you and all your loved ones. Sincerely, G. Danfulani The virtue of the month for September is Hospitality”. Welcome to St Ursula Elementary Catholic School! Uniform Reminders: The dress code for our school is white and navy blue without logos. Dress codes are to be worn at all times at school and during school activities including school excursions. Parent Council: Join us for our first Catholic School Parent Council meeting on September 13 at 6:00 p.m. Lines of communication: Parents are asked to contact teachers directly to discuss and resolve any concerns related to behaviours or academic progress. If matters are not resolved, please follow up by contacting the principal. You can reach any of our staff members through the follow-ing: Telephone: 416-393-5306 Email: please use the following email pattern - [email protected] If there is a concern related to student well-being or a request for special education support, parents are requested to contact their child’s teacher as well as the special education teacher. Medical concerns or other extenuating circumstances should be communicated to office administration. Assemblies and Conferences: At St. Ursula, we have a rich history of student-organized and student led assemblies and conferences. These events are a large part of educating our students about leadership and community living. Our assemblies and conferences are related to mental health, her-itage, multiculturalism, anti oppression, bullying and respect for one another amongst many other related themes. Health considerations: Ryan’s Law and Scent Awareness - In consideration to those with asthma, odour sensitivities and/or allergies, students, staff, par-ents and guardians are asked to refrain from wearing or using overt scents at school. Sabrina’s Law - In consideration to those with life-threatening anaphylaxis and/or allergies, students, staff, parents and guardians are asked to refrain from bringing peanuts or nuts to school for lunch, snacks or school events involving food. Concussion Protocol - The TCDSB, in response to Ministry of Education directive, has created a policy and protocol to ensure stu-dents suffering from a concussion return to learn, and return to play in a progressive and supervised way. There is a role for the physician, parents/guardians, students, teachers and administration. It is important that parents/guardians inform the school imme-diately if their child has sustained a head injury. Parents/guardians can expect to receive support, information and various forms to ensure a student does not return to full capacity until they are symptom free. Special Services Department: As part of the TCDSB’s goal of Fostering Student Achievement and Well Being, the Special Services department endeavours to support our special education students in achieving academic excellence and meeting the Ontario Catholic Graduate School Expec-tations. The department offers a variety of supports to students based on their need(s) and/or identification(s). For further infor-mation please visit the Special Services department link: https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SpecialEducation/Pages/default.aspx Parents/caregivers are reminded that if they require support in accessing the Special Services department link, they may ask the school principal for assistance. Alternately, for families who require access to a computer to visit the site, they may access an elec-tronic device through the Toronto Public Library. Home/School Connection Questions to ask your child when supporting them with home-work:

What are you working on? What are you learning? Is it challenging or not? Why? What do you do when you are stuck on a task? How do you know you are on the right track? What resources do you use at school to complete this kind of

work? What resources do you need at home to complete this kind of

work? Reflections for a parent Does my child have a quiet space to complete her/his home-

work? Have I set the framework for homework routines? Do I monitor my child’s homework for completion? Can I give my child feedback based on the learning goal and

success criteria provided?

Parent volunteers, Priests and others from the parish community, Dedicated teachers, Talented and enthusiastic students. Consider creating a school song or a 30-second video clip that celebrates your school. Celebrate Your Diversity, Celebrate Excellence, Celebrate Your Faith, Celebrate Your School. Use the hashtag #ShineOnTCDSB! Deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb-ruary 23, 2018. https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/Nur tur ingOurCatholicCommunity/Year%20of%20the%20School/Pages/Spotlight-on-Your-School.aspx Improving Access to School Bus Information for Toronto Parents Toronto Student Transportation Group and Boards Launch Transportation Portal Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board parents are now able to access their children’s transportation information online and receive email notifica-tions if there are any school bus cancellations or delays, thanks to the launch of a new online transportation portal. Parents with children who are transported by school buses can register for the new Transportation Portal by visiting www.torontoschoolbus.org. Created by the Toronto Student Transportation Group, which oversees bussing for the TDSB and TCDSB, the portal is one of several improvements being made to ensure an effective start to the 2017-18 school year, including:

Installing GPS on all buses for the 2017-18 school year so that the school boards and bus operators can track the status of buses and improve the timeliness and accuracy of communication to parents. Efforts are underway to integrate the GPS with the Transporta-tion Portal so that in the future, parents will be able to track their children’s buses in real time.

Increasing call centre staff during peak times, such as the star t of school, to improve responsiveness and communication to schools and parents.

Assigning all Principals from special needs congregated schools to a bus operating division to provide advice and insight on school issues with transpor tation and assist with driver training.

Providing bus operators with routes earlier in the planning process to give them enough time to match all routes with drivers.

Improving collaboration and communication with the bus operators on route plan-ning, which will continue throughout the summer to provide additional time to ad-dress any driver coverage issues that may arise.

Establishing the Transportation Working Group, compr ised of central and school-based staff from the TDSB and TCDSB, to assist in identifying bus service issues and develop solutions.
