Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time• July 28, 2019

Saint Alphonsus, you are the special patron of all who suffer from arthritis and the pains of many years.

When our fingers twist with pain, keep us focused on the hands of Christ pierced with nails.

When our knees throb with endless aches, allow us to see the knees of Jesus smashing to the street under the heavy cross.

When our backs stiffen with soreness, let us remember the back of Christ thrown across the rough wood of the cross.

When our hips, elbows, knuckles, and other joints hurt so much that tears well up in our eyes, help us to recall the tears, the sweat, and the blood that flowed from our crucified Jesus, who suffered so much more for each of us.

Saint Alphonsus, You were afflicted with curvature of the spine and confined to a wheelchair in your final years. Teach us to unite all our pains with the suffer-ings of Jesus. By your intercession, may our pain be eased, but even more, may we be one with Jesus in his death and resurrection for the redemption of the world. Amen.

From The Desk Of The Temporary Administrator

One of the Church’s popular prayers thus follows: “Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, my entire will – all that I have and call my own. You have given it all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours: do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.” This prayer belongs to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, one of the great saints in the Catholic Church who is known as the person who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). His spiritual insights gave birth to Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises. His defeat in a battle is actually what led to his conversion experience. Without this conver-sion, there would be no Jesuits, no Ignatian spirituality. His life reminds each of us that every defeat in our life also has the meaning and purpose to see our life differently as God intends. -St. Ignatius of

Loyola, pray for us!

Happy Feast to everyone who belongs to St. Alphonsus Congregation, as we celebrate the feast of our Parochial Patron Saint Alphonsus on August 1. One of his quotes thus follows: “All holiness and perfec-tion of soul lies in our love for Jesus Christ our God, who is our Redeemer and our supreme good. It is part of the love of God to acquire and to nurture all the virtues which make a man perfect. Has not God in fact won for himself a claim on all our love?” Our Saint left a lasting legacy for the Church. Still mil-lions of people benefit by reading his profound books, reflections and spiritual writings. He is particularly known for his deep love for God’s mercy. He is deeply convinced that Only God’s love can make a man perfect. –St. Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us!

Like previous years, we will place the relic of St. Alphonsus (relic – a part of deceased holy person’s body or belongings that is kept as an object of reverence) on the altar of our Church through the month of August. It will remind us of his saintly life.

As part of our parochial feast, we encourage and invite everyone to Feast on the Blacktop this coming Friday through Sunday (August 2, 3 & 4). There is no better way to have fun with friends, food, and music than by going to Feast on the Blacktop. If you have any questions regarding this, don’t hesitate to call our office. We will be happy to help you. Let’s build our community strong and make this event a great success.

-Fr Britto Suresh
