Welcome to St Paul’s We are glad you are here, and we invite you to enter fully into worship today, and to receive Communion or a blessing. Please pick up any other information about the parish located in the Atrium or the entrances to the church. Tell us more about yourself by filling out one of the cards located in each pew, and join us for fellowship in the Parish Hall. Help us make this a place where God’s grace is freely shared by all. Advent We are approaching the conclusion of Advent, a four-week period of preparation for the annual commemoration of the Nativity of our Lord on Christmas Day. “Advent” means “coming,” and by its very nature implies “expectation.” The season is characterized by the joyful anticipation of the Word-made-flesh, the manifestation of Emmanuel: “God with us.” During this season we omit the Gloria in excelsis from the liturgy and we count the Sundays by lighting candles on the Advent wreath. Children & Youth Children are welcome at all services, and parents should feel free to come and go with restless children as necessary. Nursery Care is available during from 9:30 a.m. until noon in the tower of the Historic Sanctuary. Worship at St Paul’s Everyone is welcome at the Lord’s Table regardless of age or denomination. We hope that you will follow the service in this leaflet, and join in the hymns found in The Hymnal 1982 and the multi-colored Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEV ) hymnal. The Word of God The Presider welcomes the People and then says

Presider Our King and Savior now draws near:People Come, let us adore him.

Members of the parish light four candles on the Advent wreath and the following is said.

Readers Lord Jesus, light of the world, blessed is Gabriel, who brought good news; blessed is Mary, your mother and ours. Bless your Church preparing for Christmas; and bless us your children, who long for your coming.

People Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Kyrie Hymnal 1982, S 88

Collect of the DayPresider Let us pray. Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily

visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

People Amen.

Please be seated

The Lessons First Lesson Micah 5:2-5aReader A reading from the Book of Micah. But you, O Bethlehem of

Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace.

Psalm 80 Qui regis Israel hopson

All join with the choir in this response, which is repeated throughout the Psalm

Cantor Shepherd of Israel, listen; lead Joseph like a flock; You are enthroned on the cherubim. Shine on Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh; rouse yourself in your power and come to rescue us. God, restore us and help us, and let your face shine brightly. Lord of the armies of earth and sky, how long will you fume while your people pray? Will you feed us tears for bread, and make us drink our cups of tears? You make us fight with our neighbors, and our foes make fun of us. God of heaven and earth, restore us; let your face shine brightly and help us.

Second Lesson Hebrews 10:5-10Reader A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Consequently, when

Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will, O God’ (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).” When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Gospel Lesson Luke 1:39-45Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.Deacon In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean

town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

Silence is kept for a space, and the choir sings this canticle

Magnificat Orlando GibbonsMy soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel,

Anthem Charles Hubert Hastings Parry

My soul, there is a country Far beyond the stars Where stands a wingèd sentry All skillful in the wars:

There above noise, and danger, Sweet peace sits crowned with smiles And One born in a manger Commands the beauteous fi les.

He is thy gracious Friend, And—O my soul, awake!— Did in pure love descend, To die here for thy sake.

If thou canst get but thither, There grows the fl ower of Peace, The Rose that cannot wither, Thy fortress and thy ease.

Leave then thy foolish ranges, For none can thee secure But One who never changes, Thy God, thy life, thy cure. —Henry Vaughan, 1621-1695
