On the Cover The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary occur at the end of this week on June 19 and 20, respectively. These two days of devotion always fall within the week after the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Church celebrates the Sacred Heart of Jesus throughout the month of June. The heart of Jesus stands for the total and unconditional love of Jesus, divine and human. In art, the Sacred Heart appears as a wounded heart surrounded by a cross and flames that signify Jesus’ burning love for us.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary is our model in faith, humility, and love of God. In 1830, Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré and asked to have a medal cast that is known as the Miraculous Medal. It bore her image on one side and on the other side are the sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary.
These two hand-carved statues featured on this week’s bulletin cover are enshrined on either side of the sanctuary. While the church was closed, the dark brown cornices above each shrine were removed to reveal the intricate, ornamental dome above the head of each figure.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—also called by its Latin name, Corpus Christi—is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost. The origin of this feast is from the 12th century, when people in the Middle Ages felt unworthy to receive the Eucharist, and began the practice of adoration of the Real Presence of Christ in the form of consecrated bread—or the Blessed Sacrament. The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ was introduced to the Universal Church in 1264. A tradition says that St. Thomas Aquinas wrote prayers and hymns for this feast.
Scripture Reflection Today’s Readings: Deuteronomy 8: 2–3, 14b–16a; Psalm 147: 12–13, 14–15, 19–20; 1 Corinthians 10: 16–17; John 6: 51–58 In John’s Gospel, Jesus gives a long discourse on the Bread of Life. In today’s Gospel, he says that the bread he will give is his flesh. The leaders of the Jews don’t understand. Hopefully, we can do better. In the pagan world at the time of Christ and before, a sacrifice was also a meal. Jesus used that understand-ing of sacrifice to explain his gift of self. He would die on the cross as a sacrifice to the Father and we would share in the meal by consuming bread and wine, which are his Body and Blood.
Better than the pagan sacrifice, the Eucharist unites us with God because Jesus is both human and divine. His humanity allowed him to represent us to the Father, as a lawyer represents a client to the court. Jesus’ divinity allowed his sacrifice to be worthy of the Father, as no merely human gift could be.
The Eucharist also unites us to one another. Because the food we share is the Body and Blood of Christ, we in a sense become what we eat. We show this by our love, by sharing our faith, by forgiving each other, and by our service to each other. If we believe that Jesus is divine, we must believe his word that the Eucharist is truly his Body and Blood, given for us. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

While celebrating Mass during the period of “Reopening,” there are temporary changes in liturgy that provide for social distancing: Clergy will distribute the Host during Holy Communion and an adult will continue in the role of altar server. One lector will proclaim the First and Second Readings and Prayer of the Faithful. The second lector will be in the Parish Hall, if needed.
Transformation The effect of our sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive. —Pope St. Leo the Great
