Arrangements between now and September

A general principle is that we will assume that you will arrive in September to study the subjects you are currently signed up for, unless you contact us to discuss any changes. You are welcome to contact us at any time, but the schedule below outlines some formal opportunities to do so, as well as providing information about start of term arrangements:

Thursday 21 August : GCSE Results Day St Bart’s students will be asked to complete a tick-box sheet to confirm Sixth Form subject choices.

Thursday 21 and Friday 22 August : Results Clinics (St Bart’s Students) Mr Robbins, Mrs Sims and other members of staff will be available to meet with individual students and their parents as required. Appointments can be made in person, or by calling 01635 576368. We will request to meet with some students whose results affect their choice of Sixth Form subjects. These requests will be distributed with results.

Friday 22 August : Results Details (External Applicants) External applicants are asked to confirm their place at St Bart’s by bringing a copy of their GCSE results

between 10.00am and 12 noon to the Sixth Form Office in the Wormestall block. Staff will be available to discuss any changes to their subject choices.

Monday 1 September, Staff Training Day

Tuesday 2 September, 10.30am – 12 noon for those who need further advice Subject teachers will be available in the Sixth Form Area to give advice to any prospective Year 12 student who is still uncertain about subjects, or who was unable to make a clinic appointment. Any change to subjects would then need to be confirmed with Mr Robbins, the Head of Sixth Form, who will also be in the Sixth Form Area.

Wednesday 3 September – External applicants in school at 11.00am All external applicants starting in the Sixth Form at St Bart’s are to arrive at 11.00am and report to the Sixth Form Area on the first floor of the Wormestall block. They will be met by School Officers for various activities before meeting their tutor group .

Wednesday 3 September – St Bart’s students in school at 12.15pm All students to arrive in school at 12.15pm and report to their tutor groups. Notices will be displayed giving the location of tutor rooms. Various activities will take place during the afternoon, including the issuing of timetables. Mr Robbins, Head of Sixth Form, will again be available to deal with any queries. Subject lessons will begin on Thursday 5 September.

Wednesday 3 September – Confirmation of Entitlement to Education in the UK In order to confirm their entitlement to education in the UK, it is now a requirement that the school checks the residency of all Sixth Form students. We have been advised that, as part of this process, we will need sight of the original document(s) and all Year 12 students are to bring the document(s), as noted below, on Wednesday 3 September. A UK/EU passport with photograph Where a passport is not available: A full birth certificate with parents’ names on it, or an Adoption certificate, or Naturalisation certificate. No photocopies will be retained but key information will be recorded and stored securely on the school’s database.

During the first two/three weeks of term There will be a small number of students who wish to change their mind about courses. This needs to be discussed on an individual basis with Mr Robbins, and will normally involve changing rather than dropping courses. The advice is that if a change is needed it needs to be made early to avoid missing too much time in the subject being taken up.

NB: Please remember that some courses will fill up early and it will not always be possible to change to a particular subject. In general the earlier you apply for a change the more likely it is that there will be space.

THE SIXTH FORM AGREEMENT

THE SCHOOL’S COMMITMENT TO YOU The school will provide for you:

Initial and continuing guidance about courses to meet your needs.

Appropriate teaching and opportunities for learning.

Setting and marking of study tasks.

Regular Reports which will take account of your abilities and your objectives for the future.

A formal meeting with your Tutor at Study Focus Day, and contact with your Tutor every day of the week.

Facilities and resources for study and the encouragement to acquire sound learning skills and study habits.

Careful and comprehensive advice and guidance on progression routes.

A willingness to meet with yourself (and parents/carers) at published meetings and when an appointment is requested.

A genuine concern for the welfare and development of all students. Staff are available for consultation and will seek the help of outside agencies when needed.

There will always be someone on the staff for students to turn to.

THE SIXTH FORM STUDENTS’ COMMITMENT You will be expected to:

Show respect for people and property at all times.

Have a high rate of attendance (95%+).

Be prompt to all lessons, tutorials, assemblies and to fulfil any additional commitments you have undertaken; field trips, sporting events, duties, etc.

Arrive fully prepared for each lesson, or school activity, with required work completed, and appropriate resources.

Strive to attain good standards of work, and meet all requirements of the course.

Systematically use study time to follow up and consolidate work covered in class. The expectation is that each hour’s lesson should be matched by an hour’s independent study.

Respect the working environment in the designated silent study areas.

Be available to staff who need to see you at times when you have no lesson timetabled.

In the event of teacher absence, seek out and complete cover work.

Remember you are a role model to younger students. Please sign here to show that you have read and accept these expectations.

………………………………………………..

Students who do not meet these expectations will be given additional support to do so. If

this support is not acted upon a student may ultimately be asked to leave the Sixth Form.

WHOLE SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS

Sixth Form students are expected to take pride in themselves and their school and

should appreciate that the good name of the school depends on their courteous

behaviour in public places. They should set an example to others in the school in this

respect.

High standards of behaviour and respect for people and property are required at all times. The safety and well-being of the whole school community is of paramount importance. The school has these specific rules but any action or possession, which may cause

upset, injury or harm is unacceptable to the school community.

1. Except for prescribed medication, students are forbidden to bring alcohol/drugs onto school premises, to be in possession of them, or to consume them. Breaches of this rule may result in exclusion. The rule also applies to any off-site activity or visit organised by the school. – (See Policy on Substance Use and Misuse.)

2. No student may bring cigarettes, matches or lighters to school, and smoking whilst wearing school uniform, is punishable by a Sixth Form detention.

3. Betting or gambling or playing any game for money on the school premises is not allowed.

4. Chewing gum is not allowed at any time on school premises. 5. Loss of, or damage to, school property or the property of another person,

must be immediately reported to a member of staff. Students will not be punished for accidental damage, but may be punished for failing to report it. The actual cost or a contribution towards replacement will usually be required.

6. Students have the right to expect that their possessions will not be touched by others without permission. Interfering with another student’s possessions is a serious offence and will be dealt with accordingly.

7. During school hours, students in Years 7 – 11 may only purchase items of food and drink in the school – never out of school.

8. Students may only eat in designated areas. 9. Books issued to students are the property of the school and are issued on

loan only. The student to whom they are issued is responsible for their care and safe return when requested. A replacement charge may be made for lost/damaged items.

10. The City Playground is out of bounds to all students except to and from school.

11. Only bring equipment to school you require for your studies. Avoid bringing cash, valuables and electrical equipment, including iPods and MP3 players into school. Mobile phones are permitted for emergency use. They must be switched off/on silent during the school day and should not be used during breaktimes.

12. Scooter/skateboards are not permitted as a means of transport to/from school. Where a cycle is used, no liability can be accepted by St Bartholomew’s School for damage or theft whilst on school premises.

SIXTH FORM DRESS CODE & APPEARANCE

Sixth Form students must be smart and business-like in their appearance.

DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS

Applicable to male and female students

Boys

Black, navy or grey suit

Shirt and tie of choice

Formal footwear

Girls

Smart and businesslike, with jacket

Formal footwear

Notes

No denim, no leather, no hoodies, no trainers.

No extremes of hairstyle.

Jewellery is limited to modest earrings, necklaces and bracelets; in particular

no facial piercing is allowed.

This dress code is designed to keep St Bart’s Sixth Formers smart and businesslike

in their approach to school.

Students who do not meet dress code requirements will be warned, and at a

second offence risk being sent home to change before returning to school.

THE SCHOOL DAY Students are expected to arrive promptly at 8.40am each morning and at the start of each lesson. Students should be in tutor bases before 8.40am. If they arrive after 8.40am, they will be marked late.

All students must attend the 12.10pm tutorial/PDP session/assembly every day.

Year 12 and Year 13 must be on site from 8.40am until at least 12.30pm every day. If they do not have lessons in the afternoon, they are free to leave early but should, where possible, seek to work in school or involve themselves in extra-curricular activities. Students who arrive at school after morning or afternoon registration because of illness, medical appointments or other authorised absence, must sign in either at their House Office or in the Sixth Form Area. A key principle is that students should be focused on academic work between the hours of 8.40am and 3.30pm, Monday - Friday. Students are not authorised to secure paid work or take driving lessons during these times.

PRIVATE STUDY Students should devote a substantial amount of time both at school and at home to private study. As a guideline the time needed for independent study to ensure success on courses is one hour per lesson in school.

In Study Periods, students may use the school Library, the Sixth Form study area, the main Hall extension or designated quiet rooms. Students following courses requiring the use of specialist equipment should negotiate the use of specialist rooms with the teaching staff concerned. There is a definite expectation that students should do more than the set work. Where students do not have specific homework tasks they should consolidate and extend their reading through additional reading, research and practice. Links to relevant subject based websites are available on the Sixth Form blog: http://stb6th.edublogs.org Teaching staff will supervise study periods in the Sixth Form Study Area. Where there are concerns about a student’s ‘Work Outside the Classroom’, the Head of Sixth Form will require the student to sign in for designated study sessions.

13

ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend all of their lessons. This is clearly essential if best progress is to be made. Details about absence from school and from lessons will be included in reports. When a student knows that s/he is going to be absent (e.g. hospital appointment, university interview), it is a matter of courtesy to inform his/her Tutor and subject teachers in advance. They should also inform their House office so that an appropriate code may be entered on the system. In the case of unexpected absence parents are asked to contact the ‘attendance hotline’ on 01635 576372 and leave a message stating the student’s name and a

contact telephone number. It is inappropriate for students to miss school for family holidays, and this will not be authorised other than in exceptional circumstances.

Students who fail to meet expectations regarding attendance and punctuality will be required to complete independent work under supervised conditions in the Sixth Form Area.

SIXTH FORM BLOG Notices and key information on St Bart’s Sixth Form is available online via a dedicated blog. This is updated regularly and can be accessed via OpenHive and directly at http://stb6th.edublogs.org via all browsers and mobile phones The blog contains information on university, careers and job opportunities. All students are encouraged to share relevant notices on the blog. Messages for the blog should be shared with the Head of Sixth Form or via one of the School Officers.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY All students will have the opportunity to undertake additional roles and to become involved in the rich and varied nature of the school community.

SCHOOL OFFICERS The team of School Officers provides leadership within the Sixth Form and the school in general. To be part of the team of School Officers is a well-earned privilege, and applications and appointments are made soon after Easter in Year 12. All who show initiative and enthusiasm are encouraged to apply. The posts are: Head Girl, Head Boy Deputy Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy House Captains Further details of each role are advertised at the time of application, although anyone wanting to know more at any other time of year can see the Head of Sixth Form.

SUBJECT REPS Year 13 students are encouraged to apply to represent one of their subjects as a Subject Rep. Year 12 students are encouraged to seek subject specific advice and support from these Subject Reps.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES St Bart’s provides a huge range of extra-curricular opportunities in the Sixth Form. One of the main features is that Sixth Form students are encouraged to help lead and run clubs and societies, both within the Sixth Form and for students in the lower school. New initiatives of this kind are always valued. Sport, music, drama, debating, the equestrian team, World Challenge, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, CCF and Young Enterprise are just some of the opportunities on offer. Sixth Form sports teams play regular fixtures against other local schools, and the highlights of House Music, House Drama and House Dance are also eagerly anticipated each year. Again Sixth Form students play a key role in leading these House events. Opportunities to work with younger students as mentors in literacy, numeracy and anti-bullying will be publicised. Further details of extra-curricular opportunities are detailed in the ‘Sixth Sense’ booklet available from the Sixth Form office and on the blog: http://stb6th.edublogs.org

14

REPORTS AND FEEDBACK ON YOUR PROGRESS

Sixth Form students are encouraged to have on-going dialogues with their teachers about their progress. Mature relationships with teaching staff in which areas for improvement can be aired and shared is a feature of successful students, and staff will always respond positively to students who take the initiative in seeking to improve their work.

More formal reporting to you and your parents occurs as follows:

Year 12:

Interim reports in November and January (likely final attainment will be reported as an AS or GCSE grade as appropriate, with further grades for engagement in learning and work outside the classroom).

Full written reports in March

Study Focus Day in December

Subject Parents’ Evening in November Year 13:

Interim reports in November and January

Full written reports in March

Subject Parents’ Evening in October

Study Focus Day in December

These opportunities are set up to provide both you and your parents with regular formal feedback and should, we hope, be extremely useful to all involved. Students are expected to engage in an active discussion with staff about their progress as a result of each report. Reports are monitored rigorously by Tutors, House Heads and the Head of Sixth Form. Poor performance in one of more of these areas will have consequences for students. Academic Progress against MEG (Minimum Estimated Grade) Work Outside Classroom Engagement in Learning Attendance MTE (Meeting Tutor Expectations) Poor reports may put a student’s place in the Sixth Form in jeopardy. Contact will be made with parents and the following steps may also be taken: - withdrawal of ‘free’ time on Wednesday and Friday afternoons - enforced attendance at after school Homework club - withdrawal of ‘Activity Time’ - enforced signing in at Supervised Study Sessions. Students who are under-achieving can expect to be asked to discuss their progress with their Head of House or with the Head of Sixth Form, with their parents present if necessary.

CAREERS GUIDANCE Careers education forms part of the tutorial programme and there are strong links with the local Connexions service. Programs such as ‘Fast Tomato’ are available on the school system to help you make decisions about what careers may be appropriate for you. Individual interviews are held around Easter of Year 12 with any students who may be considering leaving school at the end of Year 12, and follow-up appointments with Connexions are made if necessary. Students will be helped to complete applications for college or employment. Students who decide not to apply to university, or who are uncertain whether they will take up a university place, are given both group and individual guidance during the autumn term of Year 13. Students can request a Connexions interview at any point in the year.

DRIVING TO SCHOOL Students who wish to drive a car, motor-cycle, scooter or moped to school must have the permission of the school to do so.

In order to obtain permission, students must obtain a form from the Sixth Form office, which should be returned, when completed, to the Head of Sixth Form. Details of the car make and model, registration and colour will be logged against the student concerned. Where there is a need to park in the nearby roads, students should do so sensibly and show consideration for local residents, and other road users. A small amount of parking is available at the old Wormestall site, but there is no parking for students on the main school site. If these rules are broken, or if students are seen driving in an irresponsible manner, parents/carers will be contacted in the first instance. The school also reserves the right to withdraw permission for the student concerned to drive to school.

UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS St Bart’s is justly proud of its record of students achieving their desired places at university, including Oxford and Cambridge. There is a strong and supportive process to help you make the right decisions and then submit an effective application: March (Year 12):

All students encouraged to attend the Higher Education convention in Reading.

High achieving students attend the Oxbridge conference. April to June (Year 12):

Students encouraged to start making decisions about courses; a good starting point is www.ucas.com.

June and July (Year 12):

Intensive programme of guidance in tutorial sessions, including an introduction to the on-line application system. Alternatives such as gap years and employment are also discussed.

September and October (Year 13):

UCAS forms completed, with guidance from tutors at all times, Heads of House or Head of Sixth Form as required. All forms are rigorously checked before sending. Students are expected to apply by October half term.

October/November (Year 13):

Applicants for Oxford and Cambridge given mock interviews and advice about reading around their subject in preparation for college interviews. Some students for top universities will also be prepared for and sit entry exams such as BMAT, UKCAT, HAT and LNAT tests.

October to April (Year 13):

Students receive offers from universities and clear advice is given on making final decisions about which offers to accept. We also counsel the few students who change their minds or who are not happy with the offers they receive. UCAS Extra can provide an alternative choice at that point.

August (Year 13):

A Level results are issued. Most students are delighted to have made their offers. Staff will be on hand to advise the few who miss out – nearly all can find places through ‘clearing’ system.

PAID EMPLOYMENT Many Sixth Form students seek some employment either in the evenings or at the weekends. Balancing this with studying proves difficult for some students, but the time management skills involved are important. This is especially true for those who will go on to university where similar arrangements are likely. We recommend that students work no more than 10 hours per week in order to

ensure that their studying is not adversely affected. This figure has been shown in national studies to be about the maximum most students can sustain whilst still achieving their academic potential. Remember that your future employments and earnings potential are much more dependent on your academic qualifications than on your part time job. Do you want

an extra £20 a week now or an extra couple of hundred pounds a week in the future? Under no circumstances should students be doing paid work during school hours, 8.40am - 3.30pm, Monday - Friday.

THE ST BART’S CARD

Every student will be issued with a St Bart’s card on his/her first day; this should be collected from the Dining hall. The card has two main functions:

a) – Use of MFD (multi-functional device)

An MFD is located in every floor in each block. The machines are used for photocopying, printing and scanning and are for both staff and student use. Access to the machines is permitted through the St Bart’s Card. Each student is allocated a capped allowance in order to use this facility.

b) - Dining

The St Bart’s card will be used to purchase school lunches. The card can be credited by cheque or cash on your child’s first day at school; thereafter, payments can be made as follows:

using the on-line ParentPay system via www.parentpay.com. A username and password will be sent to you through the post. Monies loaded in this way provide for immediate spending;

using a Pay Point card, which can be applied for via the Finance Department. Information will be sent with the username and password. Monies take up to seven days to be available for spending;

by cheque, made payable to St Bartholomew’s School every morning between 8.15am – 8.40am and break times on Mondays. Monies are immediately available to spend;

only if absolutely necessary, by cash, which will be accepted on Mondays. However, please note that coins will not be accepted and change will not be given.

Parentpay – Payment for School Trips

In addition to purchasing credit for school lunches, parentpay offers a means through which school trips may be paid. Simply log on to your parentpay account and select items to be added to basket. Then use the secure online checkout process to finalise your purchase.

INFORMATION TO BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL FOR CURRENT STUDENTS AND NEW STUDENTS TO ST BART’S The following information must be completed by parents/carers and returned to the Sixth Form Office in W131 at school by Friday 18 July. 1. Sixth Form Entry Form Please complete the Sixth Form Entry Form and return it to school . This is required for all students starting in the Sixth Form at St Bart’s, whether or not they have already attended in the lower school. The law requires schools to ask information about: a) The name and address of every person who has parental responsibility for a child b) The student’s ethnic origin c) The language normally spoken at home By providing your email address we will be able to communicate with you via Schoolcomms, which is very helpful in providing you with information/updates quickly. This includes your copy of BartholoNews, the weekly school newsletter. With married/divorced/separated parents, both have parental responsibility. However, with unmarried parents, only the mother has, unless the father has obtained a court order or both have made a parental responsibility agreement. In some cases it may be possible for a student to have more than two people listed as his/her “parents”. We must also note whom each student normally lives with and, if available, a telephone number for that person. You can give us up to three people whom we can contact in an emergency. These people should live or work in the area, and be contactable in the daytime. The details of parents’ names and addresses are normally confidential and are protected under the Data Protection Act. All schools are required to collect this information, which will be used only for the needs of education and not released for any other purposes. Further information can be found in the Handbook. We will, unless you opt out, share your contact details with our Parents’ Association. In addition, you will be asked about information sharing with the Connexions/Adviza team in West Berkshire – (See student entry form). Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. I should point out that you are not legally obliged to complete the form, although some of the information is obviously vital for the day to day operation of the school and the welfare of your child. 2. Parental Consent Form: use of images of children To comply with regulations under the Data Protection Act 1998, we need your permission before we can photograph or make any recordings of your child for educational purposes. Please complete the enclosed form and return it to school by Friday 18 July.
