ARE YOU BEING WELL FED? When I became a Christian in my first year at university, a friend gave me this advice, Be careful what you eat’. He wasn’t talking about calories, junk food, or eating too much sugar. He meant, be careful about how I feed my soul. What nourishes my intellect and my outlook on life? What feeds my priorities and influences my personality? If you think about it, many things influence us: family upbringing, popular media, our culture and traditions, our peers, to name a few. My friend was implying, if I am to grow as a strong Christian, I have to make sure that I eat the right food. Jesus said, ‘A man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’. We need to feed on God’s Word, the bible, regularly. We do this to learn about who God is and what he has done for us. And we do this so that we can know how to live a life that pleases him. The same friend who gave me the first bit of advice also said to me, ‘Take charge of your own diet. Make sure you get well fed. Don’t rely on being spoon fed by your pastor’. In other words, be responsible for your own Christian growth and instruction. Don’t be passive. Human beings are always susceptible to influence, whether we know it or not. My friend was telling me, make sure I am influenced by God’s Word most of all. How do you go with this? Have you taken charge of your diet? Are you being well fed? Perhaps you need to make some decisions and take some initiative in feeding yourself better. That might mean joining a Growth Group, or taking a Christian course, or resolving to read your bible more regularly, or reading more Christian books (check out the church’s bookstall!). One thing that Megan and I have done recently is use a new iPad App called ‘New City Catechism’. It’s a great way to learn the core truths of the Christian faith. You might find other initiatives. Whatever you do, resolve to be committed to life long nourishment and growth in the Christian faith. In this matter feel free to get fat! ARE YOU BEING WELL FED?When I became a Christian in my first year at university, a friend gave me this advice, ‘Be careful what you eat’. He wasn’t talking about calories, junk food, or eating too much sugar. He meant, be careful about how I feed my soul. What nourishes my intellect and my outlook on life? My friend was implying, if I am to grow as a strong Christian, I have to make sure that I eat the right food.

Jesus said, ‘A man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’. We need to feed on God’s Word, the bible, regularly. We do this to learn about who God is and what he has done for us. And we do this so that we can know how to live a life that pleases him.
