OPEN HOUSE 2019 Wednesday September 25,2019 5:00— 7:00 pm
(Harvey’s BBQ). Catholic School Council Elections at 7:00pm
From the Desk of the Principal: I would like to introduce myself. I am Kevin MacIsaac and am pleased and honoured to be the Principal of St. John
Paul II School. Staff extends a warm welcome back to all our students and their families for the school year 2019-
2020. Welcome to those families who are new to our school community. I hope that everyone had a restful
summer.
The St. John Paul II School staff is committed to providing the best possible learning environment for each child
who attends school. We want each child to develop spiritually, academically and socially within our Catholic
School environment, which has our Catholic faith values and Our Lord Jesus at its centre. We look forward to an
exciting and enriching academic year. Close communication between home and school is the key. May God bless
us as we work together to meet your children’s needs.
We are in the planning stages of preparing many exciting and new activities for the school year. Please come out
and join our Catholic School Council. Nomination will be out soon.
We are looking forward to home, school and parish working closely together.
For St John Paul II Catholic School to be successful and effective it must address the following areas:
A clear mission
A safe, orderly and inviting school environment
Student involvement and responsibility
Student recognition
A pro-active home-school-parish relationship.
May the peace of Christ be with you as we journey together in faith.
Welcome
parents to our school community.
We know that you will enjoy your
educational experience. We also
Mrs Lyons Baker and Miss Beau-
champ to our school staff and wish
them many years of enjoyment in
our school community.

Information for
Bussed Students
Your child’s SAFETY is #1 priority! All SJPII JK/SK students must wear their
bus tag on their backpack to and from
school. Children who arrive WITHOUT
TAGS will NOT be permitted to ride the school bus
home. JK/K teachers will notify parents so they can drop
off the tag or make alternate arrangements for pick up at
school that day.
The School Board has a bus tag identification program in
place for all Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten
students to help ensure their safety. JK/SK Students
who take the bus to and from school are required to wear
an identification badge on a “tearaway” lanyard that dis-
plays the child’s name, school identification code, bus
number, stop location, as well as the School Board’s logo
and telephone number. An adult must accompany all JK/K
students to and from the bus. Parents identify the
names of individuals who are authorized to escort their
child from the bus on a Form. These are the only individ-
uals to whom the children will be released. If there is no
adult present at the bus stop, the student will be re-
turned to school and parents will be contacted to pick up.
If parents need to make changes to the information
regarding who is authorized to pick up their child, a new
form must be submitted to the HWSTS. Changes will not
be accepted by phone.
SJPII JK/SK Bussed Students
All ST. John Paul II families are invited to at-
tend this kickoff event on Wednesday, Sep-
tember 25th sponsored by the St. John Paul II
Catholic School Council. The barbecue begins
at 5:00 p.m. and will include a number of ac-
tivities. Bring the family for some food and
fun and meet our staff members! This year
Harvey’s will be catering the food. Please fill
in and return food order forms as early as pos-
sible so that orders can be placed.

School Agendas
home and school is crucial for student success.
Students use an agenda book to help them
keep organized regarding homework assignments,
trips, etc. It is important that parents review dai-
ly work and upcoming assignments every school day.
Cost for an Agenda book has been paid for by the

FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL STUDENTS,
DO NOT SEND IN FOOD TREATS
In 2018 we have more calls for use of technology in
schools. Classes can invite students to “Bring Your
Own Device” (ex. E-readers, laptops) for use in the
class as part of class activities. The HWCDSB
supports responsible use of technology.
If a student is found using electronic equipment
inappropriately, the item can be taken away, and
their privileges reviewed. Only under special
circumstances (Visit the HWCDSB website at the
Board Policy link for more details.

Eco School — Lunches
SJPII is an ECO School. Please try to pack litterless
lunches by using lunchboxes and reusable plastic
containers for sandwiches and drinks. In order to
help protect the environment, we will not be providing
plastic spoons. If you send your child to school with
a fruit cup, jello, pudding, pasta, etc.

Toys from Home Labelling of Clothing
With all clothing looking the same, labelling of
clothing eliminates confusion. There is a lost and
found box at school that is usually overflowing with
items that were lost and cannot be returned to the
proper owner because they were not labelled.
Parents on Play Yard Safety is our first priority. So to this end Parents
are to stand on the outside of the fence and allow
their children to go into the play yard alone. Also

Toys are a very important part of
learning and play. The JK/SK
classrooms are equipped with lots
of toys. Kindly keep all personal
toys at home. They can easily be
misplaced at school.
Accidents happen at school which can result in clothes
getting wet and/or dirty and needing to be changed.
It is important that you send a change of clothes with
your child everyday. Please put the clothes in a Ziploc
bag so that it can be reused to put the wet clothes in
to be returned home. Please check the bag daily to
ensure the clothes being sent to school are clean. Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can
be a difficult decision for parents to make. Students
with fever, colds, strep throat, vomiting, diarrhea,
conjunctivitis (pink eye) and/or rashes should stay at
home. Please consider the health of your child and
the other children in the class before sending your
child back to school. If children come to school, they
will go outside for recesses.
Sick Children —
WANTED Coaches for our School teams
Fielding sports teams in schools requires the whole community of Staff, Parents and Student Volunteers.
Should you be interested in coaching (Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Cross Country and track) please
let us know in the Main Office. Games start soon.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) is committed to ensuring that all reasonable efforts are made to protect the health and well-being of our students by creating awareness of head lice and preventing and\or minimizing the spread of head lice in the schools. Head lice are wingless insects that live only on the scalp of human beings. They cannot fly or jump, and they are not found on cats, dogs or any other house- hold pets. The bites from head lice can cause itching and scratching. Scratching may cause sores which can get infected. When children play, their heads often touch. Lice crawl from head to head. Head lice are spread by direct head to head contact only. (Facts of Lice, 2003, Hamilton Public Health and Community Services Depart- ment)
Based on the current medical research, it is essential that head lice be treated with two applications of an approved treatment seven days apart.
Procedures for when Head Lice is identified: Parents/guardians of students identified with head lice will be notified by the school
and will be required to seek treatment for the child. Parents/guardians are required to complete the first application of an approved treat-
ment prior to the student returning to school. Parents/guardians are required to complete the Verification of Treatment form and
return it to the school when the student returns following the first application of an approved treatment.
If the Principal has concerns that an individual case of head lice is an indication of a larger concern, the Principal may consult with the school’s designated social worker.
All parents/guardians of students in a class in which a student or students are found to have head lice will be notified.
A school may designate a specific day or days for screening all students for head lice, using trained resource persons.
Parents are reminded to take responsibility to check their child’s hair frequently and to co-operate by administering an approved treatments recommended by a pharmacist or medical practitioner when needed.
