Romemu is a welcoming,
experiential, irreverently
pious, intergenerational
community that elevates
and transforms individuals
and communities into more
compassionate human
beings through the lens
of Jewish wisdom.
We are devoted to a post-
denominational Judaism
that engages the heart, mind,
and body, that transcends
labels, that is joy-based
and contemplative, ecstatic
and reverential, and that is
connected to our tradition,
yet open to truth, wherever
it is found.
B E N E F I T H O S T S 2 O I 9Thank You to our incredible Co-Chairs, Caroline Ellen and Susie Schein,
and Co-Chair Emeritae, Allegra Kochman and Paula Yormak, for being the
driving force behind the success of the 2OI9 Romemu Benefit. Every detail is
a testament to your dedication, selflessness, exactitude, and foresight.
To our Vice Chairs, Host Committee, and to Marla Alt, Wendy Handler,
Fred Imberman, Lisa Phillips, Karyn Schiller, and Janice Tannin, we are
forever grateful for your passion and commitment. You have
rallied this community and turned vision into reality.

About Pamela & Peter TakiffEsteemed honorees Pamela and Peter Takiff have
been instrumental in building Romemu’s vision.
Peter served as Romemu’s Board Chair for three years and in that time helped steer Romemu to become a thriving organization reaching thousands of families locally and many more globally. During Peter’s tenure, Romemu introduced consistent livestream services and classes, offering thousands the opportunity to join in and share community beyond the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Before chairing the Board, Peter served as Treasurer, a member of the Executive Committee, and chaired the Development Committee. Most notably, Peter led the successful search for Romemu’s permanent home, instrumental in creating the current Romemu Campus on 105th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Peter’s ability to stay calm, centered and affable in the midst of chaos makes him an inspiring leader.
Pamela, a talented human rights attorney, has co-led workshops at Romemu to explore the issues of sex trafficking in NYC. This work culminated in a Romemu multi-faith seder inspired by her work. Pamela is an incredible host and has a deep sense of how to cultivate and deepen the community around
her. Pamela also brings her beautiful, soulful presence to our shul
each Shabbat.
Pamela and Peter’s generosity and outsized hearts have truly catalyzed Romemu to reach new heights. We are inspired by their passion, humility, and kindness, and feel
deeply honored to honor them.

PA M E L A & P E T E R ,
This year’s High Holiday theme was, AWAKEN: Truth. The quality of truth,
emet (אמת) is so important that every morning, at the conclusion of the
most important Jewish prayer, the Sh’ma, we add the word, emet, truth.
The very next word of the next prayer, is v’yatziv (ויציב) or solid, stable,
dependable, immovable.
Emet V’yatziv. True and Trusted. Honest and Dedicated. Real and Reliable.
Pamela & Peter.
This evening began many evenings ago—many years in fact—when you
entered the Romemuniverse. You are both so accomplished, beautiful,
talented and exceptional. You have so many gifts and laudable attributes
that we could enumerate.
There is, however, one quality, more essential to who you are that has
touched our lives and the lives of all who know you, and that is the truth,
the emet, of your love.
Your love for one another is a love that still burns deeply, as evidenced by
the way you gaze at one another (blush alert).
Your love for your children as you bring them to mind. Your love for your
friends and your love of community, music, justice, spirituality, and Romemu.
And oh how you have loved Romemu.
With your heart Pam, you gave yourself to teaching our community about the
reality of trafficking. With your heart Pam, you breathe in the beauty and pathos
of each Romemu service, often letting us know how the music or message
touched you. And with your heart, dear Pam, we have seen tears well up in
you as you speak about the connection Romemu has provided you in your
own spiritual journey.
You too Peter, have loved us and our community with an open heart. With your
heart Peter, you held Romemu as our indefatigable Board chair for three years,
guiding us as we grew and matured. With your heart Peter, you scoured the
Upper West Side for years for possible buildings in which to create a permanent
home for Romemu. And with your heart, dear Peter, you discovered the most
unlikely of all buildings for sale, literally across the street from our place of
worship, and, ironically, one of the places where Romemu ’s first services as a
full-time community were held. And with heart, and your sage guidance, you
held our hand through every step of this complex sale until the keys to the new
Romemu building were delivered. You said you would find us a home, Peter,
and as always a man of your word, you found it.
Emet V’yatziv. True and Trusted. Honest and Dedicated. Real and Reliable.
Pam & Peter, we love you.

FUND A FUTURE RABBI TO SPREAD ROMEMU FOR ALL TO ENJOY
The first-ever contemplative Yeshiva, Romemu’s Yeshiva, launches
this summer and there are 20+ highly capable young leaders
enrolled! Students are largely subsidized and receive stipends.
Students will learn for six weeks and take away an extraordinary
sense of silence in prayer, deep knowledge of Hasidic and
Kabbalistic text, and be skilled in leading a contemplative prayer
service. Cost per student is $15,000, and students pay $500.
Help us raise $300,000 to fund this year’s Yeshiva.
FUND THE TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE OF MUSIC AT ROMEMU
Romemu = music, movement, and meditation. Romemu’s soulful
and professional clergy and musicians create the vehicle for seekers
worldwide to drop in and connect with their ancestors, spirit, and
themselves. Funds go toward paying for musicians, clergy, and
our sound system. Help us raise $100,000 to fill the sounds of
the sanctuary with music for one year.
FUND A SEEKERS STUDENT
At Romemu’s Seekers Holistic Hebrew School, families explore the
power and beauty of embodied Jewish spiritual life. Our students
develop tools to live ethical, joyful, and connected Jewish lives.
We are committed to making a Jewish education accessible to all,
and your support makes a difference.
FUND A ROMEMU MEMBER
The actual cost of membership at Romemu is $5000/year per unit
(family or single). Very few of our members pay that price, and the
shul is largely subsidized by the largesse of wonderful donors. Help
support (Romemu’s general operations) by funding a member!

who, from the moment they joined Romemu in
2010, wasted little time in assuming the mantle
of leadership. Their poise, passion, and know-

spiritual hub to a national, pioneering leader

Together, Pam and Peter personify Romemu’s
values of inclusivity, compassion, thoughtful
inquiry, and energy in motion.

Any questions should be directed to the Charity and not to Sotheby's, Inc., ("Sotheby's"), which serves merely as auctioneer for the Charity in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of all the property offered at the auction:
1. (a) Neither Sotheby's nor the Charity assume any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of the authorship of any property offered at this auction (that is, the identity of the creator or the period, culture, source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified).
(b) ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD "AS IS" AND NEITHER SOTHEBY'S NOR THE CHARITY MAKES ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND OR NATURE, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE PROPERTY, AND IN NO EVENT SHALL EITHER OF THEM BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CORRECTNESS OF ANY CATALOGUE OR NOTICES OR DESCRIPTIONS OF PROPERTY, NOR BE DEEMED TO HAVE MADE, ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTY OF PHYSICAL CONDITION, SIZE, QUALITY, RARITY, IMPORTANCE, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, AUTHENTICITY, PROVENANCE OR HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROPERTY. No statement in any catalogue, notice or description or made at the sale, in any bill of sale invoice or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a representation or warranty or any assumption of liability. Neither Sotheby's nor the Charity makes any representation or warranty, expressed or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in the property. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored.
2. Any property may be withdrawn by Sotheby's or the Charity at any time before the actual sale without any liability therefor.
3. Sotheby's and the Charity reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Charity’s sale records shall be conclusive in all respects.
4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, s/he may reject the same and withdraw the article from sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, s/he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance.
5. On the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including without limitation damage to frames or glass the covering prints), (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as the Charity may require. All property shall be removed from the Charity’s premises by the purchaser at his/her expense no later than three days following its sale and, if not so removed, will be sent by the Charity at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to the Charity by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, the Charity at their option, may either (a) cancel the sale, or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages.
6. Any checks should be payable to Romemu and not to Sotheby's.
7. (a) In the case of order bids or bids transmitted by telephone, Sotheby's and the Charity are not responsible for any errors or omissions in connection such bids.
[(b) All lots [marked with [ ]) are offered for sale subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. Sotheby’s may implement such reserve by bidding up to the reserve on behalf of the Charity.]
