God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.

PRAyeR OF CONFessION (spoken in unison)Hidden deep inside us, O God, is a yearning to see Your face, to feel Your love, to know Your acceptance. Yet we cover up this desire and think we can make it on our own. We seek success and submerge our best selves in work. We try activity and pride ourselves on full calendars and busy lives. Then along came the darkened skies of Advent, and the longing in our hearts rises to the surface. We want to be loved and forgiven by God, for only God’s love makes us whole, loosens us from frantic searching, and grants us a peace beyond understanding. Holy God, let us enter into the mystery of Your coming and find ourselves loved and forgiven in Jesus Christ our Lord.

sIleNT CONFessION

s Those who are able are invited to stand.

Order of WorshipThe service of worship begins with the music of the prelude.

Through its power and brilliance, may you feel the majesty and glory of God; in its quietness, His peace. Once the Welcome has begun, please wait to enter the Sanctuary until the choir has processed.

s AFFIRMATION OF FAITh The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

About This Morning’s Music

Canite Tuba is a motet for the fourth Sunday of Advent. The motet draws its text from the first and third

antiphons at Vespers. The motet was first published in Venice in 1572. As befits its opening words, “Sound the

trumpet in Sion, for the day of the Lord is nigh,” the motet begins strongly in an extrovert manner, turning

to a more reflective and polyphonic style at the words “Come, O Lord, and be not delayed,” and ending with

an expressive outpouring of Alleluias.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (ca. 1525–1594) was born in the town of Palestrina, near Rome, then part

of the Papal States. He spent most of his life in Rome. A prolific composer, the existing music we have

today includes 105 masses, 68 offertories, 140 madrigals, and more than 300 motets. There are more than

72 hymns, 35 settings of the Magnificat, 11 litanies, and four sets of lamentations. The Gloria melody

from a setting of the Magnificat is the core of the Easter hymn tune, Victory (“The Strife Is O’er”).

Advent Vespers·········· Wednesday, December 21, at 7:00 p.m. ··········

Shadyside Presbyterian Church invites you to join us on the final Wednesday during the season of Advent for an evening of music and reflection in our Sanctuary. This 45-minute candlelight Communion service includes

a homily preached by the Reverend Dr. Conrad C. Sharps, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, and music offered by violinist Maureen Conlon Gutierrez and tenor George Milosh. Childcare is available.

Mission Partner Spotlight

Veterans are more than twice as likely as civilians to become homeless during their lifetimes. In Western

Pennsylvania, there are literally hundreds of veterans who are homeless at any given time. Founded in 1996,

Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard is dedicated to ending homelessness among veterans in the Pittsburgh

area and provides a variety of supportive services for homeless veterans. The efforts of Veterans Place equip

veterans to transition from homelessness to becoming engaged, valuable citizens with a place to call home.

Veterans Place is supported by Shadyside Presbyterian Church’s Community Partnerships Mission Action

Community (MAC). You can directly support Veterans Place, along with five additional Shadyside mission

partners, through our Alternative Gifts for Christmas event today in the Parish Hall following worship.

For more information, visit www.veteransplace.org. To join the efforts of the Community Partnerships

Mission Action Community (MAC), contact the Reverend Todd E. Leach, Associate Pastor for Missions.
