With its mission in mind, District 622 provides life-long educational opportunities for residents of all ages.

Encompassing 42-square miles, District 622 includes all or portions of seven communities within the Twin Cities metropolitan area – North St. Paul, Maplewood, Oakdale, Lake Elmo, Landfall, Pine Springs and Woodbury.

Serving more than 74,000 residents, the district includes nine elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), two high schools (9-12), an early childhood education center, an alternative learning center and a senior center. The district’s wide-variety of Community Education programs serve residents of all ages.

From highly trained early-childhood teachers in its Stepping Stones preschool to nationally-recognized programs at the high school level, District 622 is always striving to be the best.

District 622 offers something for everyone, and

staff members work hard to help each student fi nd success.

Staff members work with families and teachers to choose the most appropriate school programs and settings. High Potential students are identifi ed through parental input, teacher referral and standardized test scores. Special Services provides support for children with special needs. Extracurricular academic and athletic activities for students of all ages help enrich the educational experience.

For parents of secondary students, District 622 has implemented the Parent Portal system, which allows parents to access their student’s academic information online, from anywhere, at anytime.

The efforts of a high-quality staff are visible in student success. District 622 students regularly receive national and state recognition for achievement in arts, academics, community service and athletics.

Your Dist rict At a GlanceSchool BoardThe District 622 School Board generally holds one business meeting a month. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Education Center, 2520 East 12th Avenue, North St. Paul. Meeting dates are posted online at www.isd622.org and in the school calendar. Board agendas and minutes are also posted on the Web site. In addition to the monthly business meeting, the School Board also conducts a number of study sessions throughout the year.

School board meetings are broadcast live on Cable Channel 20, and are re-broadcast daily at 10 a.m., 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Enrolling Your ChildDistrict 622 has a centralized Student Enrollment Center at the District Education Center, 2520 East 12th Avenue, in North St. Paul.

The Enrollment Center allows parents to register their students in one centralized location. The Enrollment Center is open from 7:30 am. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For information, or to register, please call 651-748-7550.

First-time/New StudentsA child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enroll in kindergarten. Children may be registered at spring kindergarten registration, or by calling the district’s Student Enrollment Center at 651-748-7550, or by attending the district-wide elementary registration day, which is held in August.

TransportationBus service is provided for elementary and middle school students (K-8) who live more than one mile from their school, and for high school students (9-12) who live more than a mile and a half from their school or for those children who must walk in hazardous traffi c areas. Bus schedules are posted on the district’s Web site, www.isd622.org, in August.

Nutrition Services622 Nutrition Services provides students with healthy, well-balanced meals. The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program providing nutritionally balanced lunches to children each school day. All meals are USDA regulated. Nutrition Services offers breakfast and lunch at all buildings.

Free or reduced-price meals are available to students who qualify. Applications

are available in school offi ces, included in the school calendar, or by calling Nutrition Services at 651-748-7530.

CommunicationDistrict 622 provides parents with several ways to keep informed about district events and decisions.

The 622 News is a district-wide newsletter that is mailed out to residents four times a year.

The district Web site, www.isd622.org, has information about district programs, services and events; as well as links to our schools and Community Education programs. While online, sign-up for the district’s list serve, the 622 Learning Zone. This e-mail service provides regular updates about district events and happenings. To sign-up, click on the Learning Zone link located on the home page of the district Web site, www.isd622.org.

SchoolMessenger is a digital voice-messaging system that allows the district to notify all parents by phone in the event of an emergency, such as a school closing. Individual buildings also have the ability to use the system to notify their parents of upcoming events.

Your Elementary School Programach of the nine elementary schools in

the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District provides an academically and socially balanced approach to education for students in grades kindergarten through fi fth.

For each grade level, the district has established a comprehensive curriculum that includes a set of essential outcomes, which outline what students are expected to know and be able to do.

Teachers also meet with their peers in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on a regular basis to discuss student progress and provide support as they work to meet the instructional needs of each child.

The elementary schools are also able to offer many innovative and challenging educational opportunities.

Your Middle School Programhe North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School

District embraces a middle school concept, serving students in grades 6-8. Each of the three middle schools are built around the “house” concept, in which each grade has a majority of its classes located in one area.

Teachers work as teams at each grade level and meet daily to coordinate class work and identify interventions for students. This team approach enables staff to meet the individual academic needs of each student.

A strong curriculum is at the center of the middle school foundation, with grade-level expectations established for each subject including: language arts, mathematics, media, science, social studies, technology, health, art, music and family and consumer science.

Besides the traditional coursework, each middle school also offers a number of academic and social opportunities outside the classroom.

The North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District makes it easy for parents to stay informed about their child’s education. The Parent Portal allows parents to connect with student data online, anytime, from anywhere.

Through this free system, parents can access their child’s

attendance record, class schedule and assignments, as well as print report cards.

reparing students for the future is the foundation behind the North St. Paul-

Maplewood-Oakdale School District’s high school program. Whether students are college- or career-bound, District 622 works to ensure that all graduates are prepared for that next step.

The district has two high schools serving grades 9-12: North High School, 2416 East 11th Avenue, North St. Paul; and Tartan High School, 828 Greenway Avenue East, Oakdale. Each school serves about 2,000 students.

A comprehensive curriculum is designed to challenge the interests and abilities of the diverse student body. A wide variety of courses of study are offered for college-bound students, those planning vocational education, and students who will enter the workplace immediately after high school.

College credit is offered for full- or part-time college attendance under the Minnesota Post-Secondary Enrollment

Options program and through the College in the Schools program. In addition, both North and Tartan offer a number of Advanced Placement classes.

Students at North and Tartan attend classes on a six-period, trimester schedule, which enables them to earn up to 18

credits each school year. In order to graduate, students are required to successfully complete coursework in a broad area of study, including: language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, physical education, career

investigation, and the arts. In addition to the required classes, students can also select from a long list of electives to round out their education.

Outside of the regular school day, students may participate in athletic team sports and non-athletic co-curricular activities. In both academic and athletic competitions, District 622 students regularly receive state and national recognition for their achievements.

Your High School Program

College in the SchoolsCollege in the Schools delivers University of Minnesota courses to high-achieving high school students for college credit, right at North and Tartan. The program gives students direct experience with the pace, academic standards, and individual responsibility inherent in a college education.

Your Alternative Learning Optionsroviding opportunities for high school students, as

well as adult learners, to meet their individual educational goals is the focus of the Harmony Learning Center. Harmony is home to a variety of programs including: District 622’s Alternative High School Program, GED Diploma Program, and Adult English-as-a-Second Language Program.

PRIME Area Learning Center

PRIME ALC is District 622’s Alternative High School Program. It is an extension of the district’s secondary schools and is intended to provide an alternative option for students ages 15-19 who have

experienced or are experiencing diffi culty in the traditional education system. The goal of the program is to assist students in making progress toward earning a high school diploma in an alternative setting.

GED Diploma Program

General Education Development (GED) is a self-paced program offered through Community Education, which is designed to help adults study and prepare to take the GED test. Eligible students are not enrolled in and have not graduated from high school. Earning a GED can help an individual move on to the next level—college, technical training, or a better job. Harmony also is an offi cial GED Testing Center.

English-as-a-Second Language

English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) classes are provided through Community Education to help foreign-born Adult English Learners improve their English skills. The program offers Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels of classes. Both day and evening classes are available.

Harmony Learning Center

Your Community Education Programshe district’s Community Education Department

provides learning experiences for people of all ages, abilities and cultures.

Adult Enrichment offers fee-based educational and enrichment opportunities including classes, day excursions, presentations/discussions and Chautauqua events. District residents often facilitate the classes and activities. 651-748-7445

Aquatics gives people of all ages and abilities the opportunity for swim lessons, fi tness and recreational water activities. The pools are also available for private rental. 651-748-7434

Building Scheduling and Facility Use encourages the use of school facilities for community social, recreational and educational purposes. 651-748-7439

Community Bridge promotes inclusion for adults with disabilities and provides support and accommodations to facilitate their participation in Community Education programs. Customized classes are available for adults with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities.651-748-7437 or 651-748-7436

Older Adult programs offer educational, recreational, social and health/wellness activities as well as Meals on Wheels and special events. Information about community resources is also available to older adults and their families. 651-748-7250

Youth Opportunities include year-round academic and service enrichment opportunities for young people in grades K-12. Students in grades 6-12 are also recruited and trained as leaders and volunteers. 651-748-7445

Parent and Family Education provides families with children resource information and a wide range of educational opportunities, support groups and classes. 651-748-7280

Parents Forever, a class for divorcing parents, is offered throughout the year. It meets court requirements for divorce education. 651-748-7295

Volunteer Resource Services for adults and youth recruits, screens and trains volunteers to work in the schools and district education programs, and provides community resources and educational programs to schools. 651-748-7250

Community Education Advisory Council is composed of a group of citizens working together to assist schools, communities and other local groups and individuals in collectively identifying and resolving community needs and concerns. The Advisory Council forms a communication link between Community Education and the community. There are 5-7 meetings per school year, which are generally held the fi rst Thursday of the month from 6-8 p.m. New members are always encouraged to apply. Your Early Childhood Programsistrict 622 reaches out to even the youngest students

and their parents through the Early Childhood Family Education program.

ECFE offers families with infants, toddlers and preschoolers a wide variety of classes to learn and grow together. Programs provide new parents with support groups and resources to help them promote development and growth in their children. Early Childhood Screening is a simple, early check of your child’s health and developmental growth at 3 1/2 and 4 years of age.651-748-7289

School Readiness strives to ensure children arrive at kindergarten ready to learn. Identifi ed 4-year-olds receive help developing skills so they are ready for kindergarten. 651-748-7280

Stepping Stones Preschool: A place to learn and grow

Stepping Stones is a preschool program for children ages 3-5 that enhances their skills and abilities in preparation for kindergarten.

Stepping Stones promotes the development of children’s positive self images, confi dence, independence, social skills and success as lifelong learners. The curriculum focuses on age-appropriate activities that provide a variety of meaningful “hands-on” learning experiences in the ares of: reading, math, art, music, literacy, language, science and physical education.

Classes are available two, three or fi ve mornings, afternoons or evenings per week. Classes are available at three sites - Beaver Lake, Gladstone and the District Education Center.

Your Spec ial Education Programspecial Education is a mandated service available

to children with disabilities, birth through age 21.

Before a special education referral is made, interventions are implemented in the regular education classroom. If the interventions are not successful, the student is referred to the building Pupil Needs Committee to determine the need for special education evaluations. Parents are encouraged to participate in this process.

Special education services may include:Academic support and instruction Behavioral support Social skills development

Language and articulation development Occupational therapy Adapted physical education and other appropriate services as needed.

Special Education staff are located at each school building in the district. Parents of students with disabilities who are new to the district should contact the Enrollment Center at 651-748-7550.

Early Childhood Special EducationEarly childhood special education services are provided to children, from birth to kindergarten, who meet the criteria established by the Minnesota Department of Education.

How do I start the screening process? Early childhood screening is required for all children prior to kindergarten. Children are usually screened between 3 1/2 and 4 years of age. Call 651-748-7289 to schedule an appointment. Children identifi ed through the screening process may be referred to the Special Services department for further assessment and possible service.

ESL means English as a Second Language and ELL refers to English Language Learners.

ESL is an academic program that provides supplemental language arts instruction for children whose fi rst language is not English. The purpose of the ESL program is

to improve children’s English language skills to a level where they can succeed in their mainstream classrooms. ESL programs are available at all schools within our district.
