TheclassteachersareMrsMillerteachesP1a,MissGallacherteachesP1band

MrsBrownteachesP1c.MrsMcMurdoisoneofourDeputeHeadTeachers,partofthe

SeniorLeadershipTeamwithinschoolandresponsibleforpastoralcareofourpupilsinP1-3

andaspectsofschooldevelopment.

TheClassroomAssistantalsoworkingwithP1isMrsBradbury.

OnaWednesdayafternoonchildrenhaveadditionalteachingfromMrsMcMurdo(P1a),MrMulvenna(P1b)andMrHenry(P1c).TheyalsohaveaMusiclessonwithMrsRidlandonaThursdayafternoon.(Thisalsoallowstheclassteacherstheirapportionednon-classcontact

time)MrsLyndaMcMurdoistheDeputeHeadTeacherwithpastoralresponsibilityforP1.

GeneralInformation

• Playtimesandplaygroundsupervision:P1pupilshavetheirownplaygroundarea

withinourplayground‘QuietArea’.OurteamofClassroomAssistantssupervisethe

playgroundintervals.PrimarySevenMonitors,PlayMediatorsandBuddiesarealso

appointedtocareforandplaywithourinfantchildren.P1childrenwillhavethe

opportunitytoexploreanduseourotherplaygroundareassuchastheimaginativeand

fitnessareasoutsideofplaytimeswiththeirclassteacher.

• Snack:Mostparentsliketosendasnackforplaytime.Oneitemissufficient,asthe

intervalisshort.Asahealthpromotingschool,weencouragefruit,anddiscouragefizzydrinksandfoodswithhighsugarorfatcontents.Ourschoolcateringteamalsoprovide

adailyhealthytuckshop,openatthe‘hatch’eachmorninginterval.

• WaterBottle:Childrenareencouragedtodrinkplentyduringtheday.Pleaseprovidea

bottleforwater(notjuice)withanon-spilltopwhichcanbere-filled,asnecessary.Pleasekeepallfoodanddrinkinaseparatecompartmentinschoolbags,orinacarrierbag

toavoidleaksandspillsonschoolmaterials.Theseitemsshouldnotbe

storedwithintheredhomeworkbags.

ClassroomRoutines

• AtthestartandfinishoftheschooldaychildreninP1lineupatthe“P1

doors”(secondsetofdoorspastthemaingate)andusethese“P1doors”toenterand

exitthebuilding.

• DuringplaytimestheP1childrenexitandentertheirplaygroundareathroughthemusic

roomdoors.

• Athometimetheyarebroughttothefrontdoorstepsbytheirteacheranddismissedto

theirwaitingnominatedadult.

• PupilsusingschooltransportorgoingtoAfterSchoolcaremaketheirwaytotheschool

hallat3pmtobemetandescortedbytransportstaffandthosefromBASICand

MulberryBush.

• TheP1cloakroomisintheircorridorandpupilsareencouragedtohangtheircoatsand

schoolbagstheretidily.Anythingrequiredforthedayahead–redhomeworkbags,

waterbottlesetcaretakenfrombagsandbroughtintotheclassroom.Thechildren’s

outdoorkitbagsarestoredwithintheshelvingunderthecloakroom.

• Packedlunchesareplacedonatrolleyforeasyaccesstosnacksandlunchtime.

Weaskthatany‘returns’aresentbacktimeously.Pupilsshouldhand

theseintotheclassteacherfirstthinginthemorningtoallowprocessinginthemain

• SchoolLunches:The‘rolling’schoollunchmenuispostedonourwebsiteenablingyou

andyourchildtomakelunchtimechoices.LunchesareprovidedfreebytheScottish

GovernmentforpupilsinP1-3sonomoneyneedssentforthis.Orderingofschool

lunchestakesplacefirstthingeachmorningandiscoordinatedbyeachclassteacher.

• Milk:Milkcanbepurchasedasanoptionalextraeachday,for10p.Thismoneyshould

behandedtotheClassroomAssistant.Itispreferableifexactmoneycanbesentin.

• Monies:Sometimes,othermoneyrequirestobesentin–fortrips,theatregroups,

charitiesetc.Pleasetrytoensurethiscomesinapurse/envelopewithclear

instructions.Itcanbetrickytoworkoutwhatthemoneyisforwithachildasyoungas

this!

• Outdoorkit:Weenjoyusingourwonderfuloutdoorenvironmentforlearningasmuch

aswecan,buttheScottishweathercanmeanwetgrassandsomemud!Apairof

welliestokeepinschoolisusefultosaveschoolshoesandolderclothes(including

sparesocks)thatyoudon’tmindgettingabitwet/muddy.Ifyouhavearaincoator

puddlesuitthiswouldbeidealtokeepyourchilddry.

• PEDays:AllourpupilsundertakeatleasttwohoursofqualityPEeachweek.P1PEdays

areWednesdaysandFridays.Pleaseensureappropriategymkitandindoorsports

shoesareinschoolforthesepurposes.Ifpossible,dressyourchildinclothingthatis

easierforthemtochange.Schooltiesandgirls’tightsareaparticularchallengeforP1!

A‘TypicalDay’

Itisdifficulttodescribeatypicaldaywithinaprimaryschoolclassroomassomuchgoeson!

But,generally,pupilswillhavecorelessonsinliteracy,numeracyandhealthandwellbeing

eachday.Othersubjectswillbetaughtthroughouttheweektoensurewefulfilthecurriculum

requirementssetdownbytheScottishGovernmentwithinCurriculumforExcellence.

Theapproachtolessonsisabalanceofactiveandseat-basedtasks.Creativityaboundsand

pupilsareencouragedtoparticipateinlearning.

Consideringlocalandnationalpolicyguidance,aswellascurrentresearch,itisknownthat

youngchildrenlearnbestwhenprovidedwithwell-plannedplay-basedlearningopportunities.

TheP1departmenthasfourplayareas:WordWood(Literacy),FabFingers(FineMotor),

MagicMaths(NumeracyandMathematics)andanopenareausedformessyandroleplay.

Thechildrenhaveahomeroomthattheystartandfinishineveryday.TheP1’smoveround

theseareasasaclassgroupthroughouttheday.Eachareaissetwithplayopportunitiesto

matchthechildren’slearningtargetsforthatcurriculararea.Eachplaysessionwillinclude

timeforthechildrentoplayandinvestigatetheexperiencesprovidedaswellasincluding

directteachinginput.OnaFriday,thechildrenwillhavetheopportunitytoexperience‘Free

FlowFriday’.Thisisanopenplaysession,wherealloftheexperiencesfromtheweekwillbe

availableforeachchildtochoosewheretheywouldliketobe.Thisallowsthechildren

additionaltimetoexploreplayexperiencestheyenjoyedorwanttofurtherinvestigate.

Thehomeroomisalsousedintheafternoonsessionstocoverothercurricularareas.

TheCurriculum

TheScottishCurriculumforExcellenceinformswhatandhowweteach.Thecurriculumis

definedasthe“Totalityofallthatisplannedforchildrenandyoungpeoplethroughouttheireducation.”(BuildingtheCurriculum3:AFrameworkforLearningandTeaching,2008)

CurriculumforExcellenceisbasedaroundfourdistinctcontextsforlearning:EthosandLifeof

theSchool,Curriculumandsubjects,Inter-disciplinarylearningandOpportunitiesfor

Personalachievement.

Ultimately,weareworkingtowardssupportingourpupilstobeSuccessfulLearners,

ConfidentIndividuals,ResponsibleCitizensandEffectiveContributorsastheyprogress

throughtheirlearning.Itisabroadandgeneraleducationwithawidevarietyofsubjectstaught.

Stafforganiselearningunderdifferingcurricularareasandlinklearningacrosstheseareas,

wherepossible–oftenthroughInterdisciplinaryLearningcontexts,combiningsubjectswithin

agiventheme.

Thisapproachoffersabreadthoflearningandthedepthtoexploreandspecialise.

Knowledgeandunderstandingaretaughtalongsidethedevelopmentofskillswithin

progressiveframeworksaspupilsmovethroughattainmentwithinbroadlevels.

InPrimary1mostchildrenareworkingontheoutcomesandexperiencesrequiredwithinthe

EarlyLevelhavingprogressedthroughearlierstagesofthislevelwithinPre-5settings–most

pupilsaregenerallyassessedashavingattainedthisleveltowardstheendofP1.

IDL

IDLsareoftenreferredtobythechildrenastheir‘topic’.Learningisbasedaroundacontext

relevantandengagingforthechildrenandteacherscombineoutcomesandexperiencesfrom

relevantcurricularareastoplanforrichanddeeplearningaroundthechosentheme.

Pupilsareinvolvedinplanning–decidingwhattheywanttolearnandfindoutaboutandstaff

usetheseresponsesandtheirownjudgementtoplantheInterdisciplinaryLearning.ThisfirsttermP1willbeusingthecontext,“SharingaShell”and“SuperScience!”.

KeepcheckingthePlannerpagestoseewhatelseishappeningandhowchildrenare

progressingintheseareas.

ForestSchool

AllP1pupilswillbenefitfromtakingpartina5-weekblockofForestSchooloverthesession.

Thesearesmallgroupsessionsof10childrenwhichtakeplaceinHermitagePark.MrsMiller

leadsthesesessionsandisaqualifiedForestSchoolLeader.MrsBradburyalsosupports

duringForestSchoolsessions.ThesessionswillusuallytakeplaceonaFriday.Beforeyour

child’sblockbeginsyouwillbenotifiedbyletterofthedatestheywillattend.Youmayhaveto

sendinadditionalclothingtosupplementtheoutdoorkityouhaveprovided.Forestschool

sessionswerereallyenjoyedbylastyear’sP1andwillinvolveexploring,denbuilding,tool

work,naturalartandcampfiresnacks.

supplementtheiroutdoorkit.Ourfirstoutdoordaywillbeonthe27thofSeptemberandwill

bethemedonthepopularstory‘We’reGoingonaBearHunt’.Weareaimingtoruntheseon

amonthlybasis.Forfutureoutdoordays,wewouldlovetohavesomeP1parentstovolunteer

tosupportthese.Pleaseletusknowifthisissomethingyouwouldbeinterestedindoing.

Since2016DataisgatheredannuallybytheScottishGovernmentonattainmentinourschool

attheendofeachexpectedlevel.AteachLevelandwithineachaspectofcoresubjects,pupils

atHermitagePrimarycontinuetoattainwellabovenationalbenchmarkslaiddownbythe

ScottishGovernment.

In2018,theScottishGovernmentalsointroducedNationalStandardisedAssessments(SNSAs)

tobeusedwithourpupilsatP1,P4andP7.Thesearenot‘highstakes’testsbutcarriedoutas

partofournormalclassroutine,enablingustomatchourprofessionaljudgementswith

attainmentacrossotherschoolsinScotland.Furtherinformationwillcomefromschoolwhen

thesearebeingcarriedoutwithinthelatterpartoftheP1year.

PupilSupport

Allchildrenaredifferentandprogressatdifferentrates.Ourplanningandteachingreflectthe

individualresponseswemaketopupilsintheirlearning.Fromtimetotime,pupilswillface

challengesintheirlearningandwhenthisarises,weoffersupporttopupilstoassistintheir

progressanddevelopment.

• Workisdifferentiatedbytheteachertosuittheneedsofthechild–thismaybein

contentorinquantityexpected.

• ClassroomandAdditionalSupportNeedsAssistantsworkwithsmallgroupsand

individualstokeepataskfocussedortohelpexplain.

• And,attimes,ourNetworkSupportTeacher–MrsLafferty-McGawwillworkwiththe

classteacherinplanningmorespecifictargetsandoutcomestoenableyourchildto

makeprogress.Thiscanofteninvolveusingspecificresourcesspeciallydesignedforthe

subject,skillorconceptinhand.

Throughourreportingproceduresbelowyouwillbekeptinformedwhenthishappensand

theAdditionalNotespageswithinthePlannerwillkeepyouupdated.

Reporting

OurPupilPlannersformanexceptionallyimportantpartofthewayinwhichwereport

informationonyourchild’slearning.Wedividetheworkwedoeachyearintofourterms.

Theseplannerdetailstherangeoftargetsyourchildwillbeworkingonandtheclassteacher

andyourchildwillrecordtheirprogresswithinthesepages.Theygivemoredetailonwhatishappeninginclassandhowyourchildisachieving.Thepupilsreflectontheirprogress,

thinkingthroughtheskillstheyaredevelopingthroughouttheirlearning.

Thereportingsectioncontainsaspaceforstafftomakeasummarycommentattheendofterms1,3and4,onhowyourchildisgettingonwiththeirlearning.Thissectionalsogivesyouthespace,asaparentorcarer,tocomment.Pupilsandparents/carersarealsoencouraged

tonotedownpersonalachievementsontheappropriatepages.Thesecanbeachievements

madewithinandout-withschool.Welovetosharesuccessand,duringourweekly

assemblies,ifpupilswish,wecancelebratetheirachievementswiththewholeschool.

TheBluesectioncanoftenbeoverlookedas“justthediarypage”,butitprovidesawealthof

information,fromhomeworktocommunicationfortheweek,topupilself-reflectionsin

learning.WeaskthatyouspendsometimewithyourchildafterschoolonThursdaysassisting

intheirreflectionsatthe‘MeTime’section,sharingtogetherandnotingthisdowninthe

HomeCommentportionofeachweeklypage.Pleasesignthispageweekly.

Inadditiontothisstoreofinformation,whichbuildsupwithyourchildasaprofileoflearning

andachievementthroughtheyear,wealsohaveotheropportunitiestocomeandmeetwith

theclassteachertodiscussprogressandnextsteps.Theseface-to-facesessionsarereally

valuableandallowteacherstosharemoreinformationandforyoutoaskanyquestionsyou

mayhave.Wesendhomesamplesofclassworkpriortothesesessionstogiveyoufurther

understandingofwhatyourchildisworkingonandhowtheyaredoingwithit.

ThisyearthesessionswillbeheldinOctoberandMarch.

Shouldyouwishhowever,todiscussanyparticularconcerns,pleasecalltheschoolofficeto

arrangefortheclassteachertophoneyouormakeanappointmentwiththeschool’sclerical

assistant,andwecangetameetingwiththeteacherarrangedforyou.

ParentalInvolvement

Wearestronglycommittedtoworkinginpartnershipwithyou–you,afterall,arethechief

educatorforyourchild;andwehavemanyopportunitiesforyoutogetinvolved.

HomeLearning

We,andmanyparentsandcarers,valuetheroleofhomeworkwithinHermitagePrimary

School.Itgivesyouanopportunitytoengagewithyourchildinthe“nutsandbolts”of

learning;givingyouthechancetoseeatfirsthand,whattheyareworkingonincoresubjects,

howtheyaregettingonwithconceptsandskills-theirstrengthsandtheirareasofchallenge.

Staffsetthishomeworkaccordingtoworkbeingundertakeninclasstogiveopportunityfor

additionalpracticeanddevelopment.Weacknowledgethatopinionsdifferonhomeworkand

anyfamilyisfreetoengageinanyothertypeofhomelearningiftheyprefer.

WorkisbeingundertakenthisyeartoreviewandrefreshourHomeworkpolicyandapproaches.Weexpecttoseechangesastheyearprogresses.

HereareguidelinesforhomeworkinP1:

• Reading–Thiswillbeheardatleast3xperweekinschoolandthepagestobepractisedathomewillberecordedintheReadingRecord.Childrenshouldpractisereadingeverynightathome.Parents/Carersareencouragedtomakecommentsintheappropriatespaceon

therecord.Thechildrenwillalsohaveawordtubwithasetofflashcardsforthekeywords

theywillneedfortheirreadingbooks.Thiswillbegintobeusedbeforethechildrengeta

readingbookhome.

• Maths–Mathsactivities/worksheetswillbeissuedthroughouttheyearonaweeklybasis.TheyshouldbereturnedcompletedtotheclassteachereachFriday.

• Sounds–Initially,P1willlearntwonewsoundsaweek.OnewillbetaughtonMondaysand

theotherwillbetaughtonWednesdays.EachchildhasaPhonicshomeworkbooklet

wheretheywillbesetthecorrespondingsoundpageforhomework.Weappreciatemany

ofourchildrenengageinextracurricularactivitiesandassuchitwillsuitfamiliestodo

thesepagesatdifferenttimes.Pleasedonotdothehomeworksoundpageuntilthe

soundhasbeentaughtinclass.Inadditiontothebooklet,eachchildwillhaveasoundtub

whereacardwiththeirnewsoundwillbeaddedonthedayitistaught.Itishighly

beneficialforyourchildifyoucangooverthesedailywithyourchild.Repetitionisthekey

tohelpingthemrecogniseandrememberallthesounds.Afterthefirstsixsoundshave

beentaughtitwillbepossibleforyoutobeginusingthesoundcardstocreatesimple2and

3letterwordswithyourchild.Youwillbeinformedwhenyourchildisreadytodothis.

• PLPReflections–ChildrenareaskedtoreflectonthelearningfortheweekwithintheirPlannersonthedailybluepages.ThisshouldbecompletedonaThursdayevening.

• HomeworkChallenges–thesewillbeofferedatvariousstagesthroughouttheyear.A

separateletterisissuedwitheachchallengedetailingspecificinstructionsandtimeframe

forcompletion.

Ø Pleasenotethatteachersmayvaryamountsofhomeworkdependentoncircumstances.P1

homeworkwillbestaggeredatthebeginningtoallowthemtosettleintotheroutineof

schoollife.Schoolcanbeverytiringwhenyouarelittle,andwedon’twanttooverwhelm

them!
