Pre-Arrival Notes to Non-Local
Undergraduate Students (2019-2020)
1. Book Your Flight/Train Tickets When you schedule your flight or other means of transportation, make sure you have received your Student Visa which has to be activated at the Immigration Clearance when entering Hong Kong.
2. Welcoming Weeks (20 August 2019 – 2 September 2019)
Please pay attention to the following activities held in the Welcoming Weeks:
Mass Check-in (at both Hung Hom Halls and Homantin Halls of Residence)
Date : 20 August 2019 (Tuesday) Time : 9:00 am - 6:00 pm Students arriving before the mass check-in date need to make their own accommodation arrangements as appropriate.
Late Check-in Arrangement
If you arrive at the Student Halls between 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm on 20 August 2019, please complete normal check-in procedures at the Hall Reception Counter. If you arrive at the Student Halls after 11:00 pm, please inform the Hall Administration by email to [email protected] 3 working days in advance. You should then receive an email confirmation for acknowledging your late arrival. Upon your arrival at student halls, please go direct to Property Management Office (PMO) of your assigned hall building (at Hung Hom Halls G/F or Homantin Halls LG/F) for assistance. PMO would then issue the key card of your assigned room or a temporary room to you. Please complete the normal check-in procedures at the Hall Reception Counter in the morning of the following day.

Important Documents
Passport/ Travel document(s) (e.g. Chinese Travel Permit and 入境紙 for Mainland Students)
Student Visa and No Objection Letter
Under the Immigration Regulations, with valid Student Visa and No Objection Letter, non-local students
can take up
a) part-time on-campus employment for NOT more than 20 hours per week for the period from 1
September to 31 May; and
b) employment during summer months (1 June to 31 August) without limit in relation to work hours
and location.
2-3 photocopies of your travel documents
5-10 pieces of your passport photos
The “Notice of Offer” from PolyU for Programme Registration
Please bring the originals of ALL academic award certificates, relevant transcripts and professional
certificates claimed in/attached to your admission application for programme registration. In case you
have lost the original certificates, please request the issuing body to send an official
transcript/testimonial directly to the Academic Secretariat of PolyU. Upon completion of the programme
registration procedures, you will receive your PolyU Student Identity Card.
Proof of permanent address of your hometown in English for creation of your bank account* in Hong
Kong
(1) Mainland Students: Official Identity Card issued by Chinese Mainland
(2) International Students: Utility bill, mobile phone bill, bank statement, tax demand note, driver’s
license with address or bank statement, etc., with address in English (The bill or bank statement
should be dated within the last two months)
Cash
You may need to use Hong Kong dollars as soon as you arrive in Hong Kong.
Credit cards
You should check with your local bank in advance to see if your credit card can be used in Hong Kong
and if any additional charges apply to cash withdrawal at ATM machines, etc.
First-aid or any medicine you need to take regularly
Your medical and vaccination records
Bring your medical records (e.g. vaccination records), if any, which may be useful when you consult
doctors in Hong Kong.
Documents with details of your insurance policy issued in your home country, if applicable.
*Information provided by Hang Seng Bank (PolyU branch) for your reference. Other banks may require
different documents.

Electronic devices and travel adaptor
The standard electrical voltage is 220 volts and 3-pin plugs are used in Hong Kong. You are recommended
to bring at least one travel adaptor as you may need to recharge your mobile phone upon arrival. A small
number of qualified convertor plugs are available at Hall Reception Counter for sale while stock lasts.

Bed linings
You will need to prepare your own beddings (e.g. pillow covers and quilt) unless otherwise provided.
Personal hygiene products
You have to prepare your own personal hygiene products (e.g. toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and
conditioner, shower gel, towel) for necessary use upon arrival.
Suitable clothing
Hong Kong has a sub-tropical climate. Please check the weather details on The
Hong Kong Observatory website and consider suitable clothes to bring.

Living in Hong Kong
1. Necessities Pre-paid SIM card It can be purchased at any convenience store in Hong Kong.
Octopus Card It is convenient to use Octopus Card for transportation, transaction at supermarkets, convenience stores and vending machines in Hong Kong. You are highly recommended to buy one upon arrival. Where to get an Octopus Card : <CLICK HERE>
Personalised Octopus Card with “Student Status” If you are a full-time student aged between 12 and 25, you may apply for a Personalised Octopus Card with "Student Status". Application form is available on the MTR website in early September. <CLICK HERE> for details
2. Creation of Bank Account
The local banks may require you to provide the following documents* for creating a savings account
in Hong Kong. To speed up the application process, please bring a photocopy of the following
documents:
1. Passport/ Travel document(s) (e.g. Chinese Travel Permit and 入境紙 for Mainland Students)
2. Proof of permanent address of your hometown in English
For Mainland Students: Official Identity Card issued by Chinese Mainland
For International Students: Utility bill, mobile phone bill, tax demand note, driver’s license or bank statement, etc, with address in English (The bill or bank statement should be dated within the last two months.)
3. Proof of PolyU student identity (e.g. student ID card or full set document of Notice of Offer)
4. Proof of Hong Kong residential address in English
For students residing at Student Halls, proof of residential address will be distributed to you by the Hall Administration at check-in.
For students residing off campus, please update your Hong Kong address to the correspondence address under eStudent; send a request for Verification of Address(es) in PolyU Student Records by email to [email protected] with the image of your passport/travel document(s) and tenancy agreement.

3. Group Medical and Public Liability Insurance Schemes 2019-20 for Non-local
Students
PolyU has already prepared a basic insurance coverage (Group Personal Accident Insurance) for
students joining PolyU activities during their stay in Hong Kong.
Besides, the University has acquired Group Travel Insurance for students participating in activities
outside Hong Kong which are recognized by PolyU.
Please note that PolyU insurance policies do not cover personal hospital expenses, public liability or
travel outside Hong Kong. Hence, you may consider purchasing Group Medical Insurance Scheme
and/or Public Liability Insurance Scheme for further protection. Brief highlights are as below:
The Group Medical Insurance Scheme covers hospitalization medical expenses due to
accidental bodily injuries. However, Out-patient consultations will NOT be covered by the
Group Medical Insurance Scheme.
The Public Liability Insurance Scheme covers legal liability for accidental third party property
damage (tangible property) and/or accidental third party bodily injury in connection with the
Insured’s business.
Information of optional Group Medical and/or Public Liability Insurance Scheme(s) for non-local
students in 2019/20 academic year (i.e. 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2020) will be sent to you for
reference by email in end of August 2019.
If you intend to travel outside Hong Kong during your study at PolyU for personal activities, you are
strongly recommended to purchase a travel insurance plan.
Note for Minors (under 18 years of age)
A policy on the arrangement of opening bank account at local banks for people under age of 18 (minors)
has been imposed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Minors are required to be accompanied
by parent/guardian when opening a bank account. The parent/guardian will be requested to sign a
declaration and provide a copy of HKID card/passport/other documents if necessary. For details, please
check with the local banks directly.
