Tuesday Folders

• Each Tuesday your student will come home with a red folder that contains graded work from the previous week and important notes. Any work that is below a 70, needs to be corrected and returned to their teacher by that following Friday. We encourage all students to correct both daily work and assessments to help better understand concepts; however, only daily work grades can be changed. The daily grade will be raised 10 points but not above a 70.

Test grades cannot be changed.

Homework

Students will have about 30-40 minutes of homework each night (Monday-Thursday). This will include spelling, math, and reading for at least 15 minutes for AR goals.

*The problem solving assigned for math homework is often challenging. If your child has trouble and you aren’t able to figure it out, just put a “?”

We will go over it in class the next day

Page 16: Welcome to Parent Information Night 3 rd grade 2013-2014

What is AR? (Accelerated Reader)

• AR is an individualized reading program that AISD uses in conjunction with our Language Arts Curriculum. This program supports the overall goal in reading to promote comprehension and fluency.

• At the beginning of each 9 week period the teacher will send home an AR GOAL that the student will need to meet by the end of that nine week period. The student will carefully read the chosen book both during extra time in class and at home.

Page 17: Welcome to Parent Information Night 3 rd grade 2013-2014

After the student completes the book and feels confident to take a comprehension quiz they will inform their teacher and they will take the quiz. Quizzes can be taken in the computer lab or the classroom. Each quiz that the student takes contributes towards the overall goal set by the teacher at the beginning of each nine week period.

Page 18: Welcome to Parent Information Night 3 rd grade 2013-2014

* It is very important to help your student stay on top of A.R. Check the agenda to see what

% your child should achieve each week. If they are behind on Friday, it is considered late work

and they may be asked to stay in study hall.

2 TEST grades are recorded for A.R. each nine weeks:

• The % of goal (hopefully 100) • The comprehension/vocabulary quiz average

Page 19: Welcome to Parent Information Night 3 rd grade 2013-2014

• 2 “free” days for sugar- Winter Party• End of Year Party (birthday treats are

also allowed!)• Cafeteria rules- no sharing food, bring food for

your child only• Please make sure your child also has a water

bottle for the classroom!• Please make sure your child’s name is on all

belongings. This will ensure that items are returned to them and don’t end up in lost and found.
